OK thanks for the suggestions, thinking we'll go with a 47cm Weber kettle jobby for £88, any recommendations on any absolute essential accessories or types of charcoal to get going with bearing in mind we're on a budget? I've not done a proper barbecue in the UK for about 25 years, last time I think I just plopped a few fire lighters under the charcoal and that was it, I'm guessing not much has changed in that respect?

Chimney starter is pretty essential for a kettle style bbq.

Knowing freddie's food foibles, he'll be eating things whether they're cooked or raw regardless to liven up that gut rot roulette wheel some more!

Looks like B&Q currently have a 20% off offer at checkout for outdoor goods by the way.
Chimney starter, a pack of those wood wool firelighters, charcoal briquettes. A charcoal basket is a good idea if the BBQ doesn't come with some.
I only started using the wood wool firelighters recently and they're a game changer. It's not only plainly much better not to have chemicals all over your fire but they genuinely do a much better job at getting things moving, especially with a chimney

Looks like B&Q currently have a 20% off offer at checkout for outdoor goods by the way. Yes I saw that, it seems barbecues are very evenly matched from all sellers matching each other and after the 20% discount at B&Q they're the same as everyone else.

A meat / BBQ thermometer is also a must.

Anyone have experience with the Ninja Woodfire grill and electrics? I'm in a victorian place with old wiring. I've got an RCD (100amp I think if that helps) and I'm wondering if the woodfire at 2400w will trip anything. I'd have to use an exension lead to power it outside.

The wombo combo of the brand name and it requiring an electrical connection heaves a big NO out of me.

It's got very good reviews, but I'm wondering about people's experience with fuse boxes etc, specially in old houses. I've already got a Ninja airfryer which is 1700w and fine, but this is more power.

Rum are you an arsonsist Its the 'old wiring' thing that worries me I've got other gadgets that run on electric, like I said the air fryer and the fuse box thing is only a few years old. I just don't want to get the thing, find out it trips the fuses and then have to lug i tback. The air fryer is called a Ninja Speedi by the way. It steams food in the bottom and oven cooks it on top, so you can do roast chicken and basmati in the same pot. Great gadget.

2400w should be fine. As long as it's on an RCD, what's the worst that can happen.

What wattage is your kettle? This thing is probably still less than that.

It won't be a constant 2400w surely.
But I really like the look of that as an easy smoker, that isn't as bulky as many other options out there (they tend to be small fridge size) and a good price. Obviously it doesn't have as much space, but for easy weekday rib smoking while WFH just for family...
I'd want it to fit at least two racks of ribs though. Any less, what's the point???

Has anyone for a recipe for the stuff that peri-peri chicken places put on the chicken after it's cooked? I think it's probably mainly oil, but none of the recipes I see online sound like they are what I am after.

What’s a good cut of beef for smoking that’s also kind of steaky?

Brisket is great for smoking but I wouldn't really describe it as steaky. Bit more of an intense beefy taste.
Works really well low and slow smoke though, hard to perfect but once you do *Chef's kiss*

What’s a good cut of beef for smoking that’s also kind of steaky? Just get a rib or two of beef and smoke it to medium rare.

Need a new BBQ here, was thinking of getting a Weber Spirit ii (gas) for the convenience (and for stuff like searing and stir fries which stink the house out when done indoors).
Surely those are valid reasons to go gas?
