He's been sacked and rehired in that time.

Sorry if this has been asked a million times before but I'm both lazy and curious.
Tempted to start getting my 9 year old into 40K - is he too young and, if not, what's a good way of starting?
I last played (not seriously) over 20 years ago so I don't know my arse from my elbow, I just think Chaos Space Marines look look.

Cheers man. I'd like it to be something I can almost be "dungeon master" for and we can just enjoy collecting and painting figures together to begin with while he learns the ropes.

HeroQuest seems readily available (albeit for about £100)
Is that a good entry into tabletop gaming that I could do with a 9 year old - and maybe somehow involve a 7 year old?

That’s basically what it was designed as. It’s just a big, simple tabletop toy box that you can DM for your kids and then let them cook up their own ideas afterwards.
9 year old Starchild absolutely loved it.

I think I was 8 or 9 when I first got into it, no parental supervision just models with lead in still and a small brother to apply the rulebook I was reading on.

Also I really hope the 40K show isn't about fucking Space Marines.

Not warhammer, but d&d adventure begins was recommended to me as a good entry game. It's much cheaper than heroquest (but not over here unfortunately).

I think I was playing Heroquest and Battlemasters pre age 8 as a gateway to Warhammer.

I remember wanting Battlemasters a LOT
And yeah, Hero Quest (and later, Space Crusade both physical and Amstrad 464-ical versions) were my gateway drugs

I'm utterly bemused by this: you've got Matrix knockoffs, versus samurai, Necron wannabes, American GIs, robots, elves..? Just what the hell is going on ?

I think the "plot" is that some warring Gods have recruited/summoned heroes and warriors from throughout time and space to fight their battles for them. They have some cool special abilities/flavour. You can also get a decent Marvel expansion with a good number of heroes & villains.

Never played Space Crusade sadly. Then went straight in to the fag end of Rogue Trader (never got the rules) and our first proper GW box was the starter set for 4th Edition Fantasy: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/268185/warhammer-game-fantasy-battles-fourth-edition

The new Azrael model is basically exactly the same as the old one, but Primaris-ed. Same pose and everything.

The real challenge I had with Hero Quest is that it really does show its age. Even with the somewhat modernized tweaks like making it optionally app driven, there’s far better dungeon crawlers, especially beginner/child friendly ones out there, that it’s really just the nostalgia factor and IP keeping it together.

Heroquest just seems like a nice basic entry way into P&P rpg / dungeon crawler type games... but the price is offputting.
I notice Mantic games, in their apparent efforts to clone all GW games, have something that looks like a Heroquest equivalent. (Dungeon Saga. 14+ though)
