Well I slowly dry brushed up the swirl. Flicked some light paint over for the little stars, then did a couple big uns by hand.

I've been a busy bee - had a whole weekend free for painting, and tried out the new Army Painter Speed Paint starter box over a zenithal highlight for this lot. A bit of dry brushing with a big make-up brush and a few spots of detail and done - really impressed with the paints so far. There is a bit of an issue with them 'reactivating' when painting other paints over the top of them, so it's not quite as straightforward as using Contrasts, but so far it's been worth the minimal extra effort to get stuff done. For me at least, YMMV as they say.

I really like the look of the speed paints. I've got a few GW Contrast paints and they seem pretty good, but the army painter ones seem much cheaper and seem to be pretty good.
Should make painting Hero Quest more do-able...

My last lot of ghosties, and a test colour scheme for my Slaves To Darkness. Can't really go wrong with red, black and white.

Going through a phase of trying out some of the more obscure minis games at the moment. Hit a couple of winners with Deadzone and Infinity and have now turned my eye towards the big stomp mechs of Adeptus Titanicus.
Anyone played it all and got any thoughts? Interested in comparisons with Battletech too, from any proper old skool players.

I loved Adeptus Titanicus as a kid... but I was a kid and I have no idea if the mechanics were even remotely balanced or not. I don't even know if the new version has the same rules.
The best bit with the old one was combining it with Epic, so you had the big Titans stomping around on the same battlefield as the tiny marines and landraiders. Pretty sure that was highly unbalanced because they had void shields and could basically oneshot anyone... but didn't care.
This opinion will have no value to you, but it's making me really want to play old games.
---
I was looking at those 40k starter packs and they all seem to have these tiny battle maps, like 50cm square or something. Is 40k more small scale skirmish now, or is that just for the starter pack. Cos when I used to play we used the entire fuckin living room floor.

Yeah, it was thinking back to 40k Epic that got me looking at this. Man, me and a friend loved that game. I’m amazed GW haven’t looked to bring it back, but I suppose it would eat into the standard 40k money pit.
Hovering over the Titanicus starter set at the moment. It is inevitable.

My Death Guard are pretty elite, points wise and I'm still fielding 54 models at 2000 points

I've not tried Adeptus Titanicus, as its Horus Heresy so no xenos or anything. I just pine for the days of Epic 40K/Armageddon coming back and getting my Eldar back out. Also with Warmaster and BFG probably GW's best rules sets.
The models for AT are lush though.

Well I’ve just clicked order on a starter set, so will see how it goes. The only issue I have is that none of the models look like this: Now that’s badass.

That’s a proper box set.

I remember seeing all the Titan stuff as a kid in absolute awe, knowing I’d never be able to afford it. I miss that sense of wonder.

Also, if you’re looking for more obscure mini skirmish games and enjoy fantasy, the Song of Ice and Fire game is superb. Very well thought out rules and scenarios (especially in the newest revision), and even has worker placement tactics to make it more than just bigger gun (or sword) wins. And the minis are terrific quality for pre-assembled models.

I did look at that, but ended up going in hard on the GW LoTR game as my fantasy option, which I forgot to mention and is also superb.

The narrative campaigns in that LOTR game are amazing, if you’re into it.

I was tempted but that one is soooo hard to get over here. None of my local stores have anything, even my official GW store.

Think it was another case of GW's game design and marketing not singing from the same hymn sheet again. Rogue Trader was intended to be a skirmish game, but Citadel's model boxes didn't reflect that. 30 beaky Marines, 32 Squats, 36 Guardsmen, 18 Harlequins. Baring how few vehicle options there were, the model range of a skirmish game was marketed as mass combat.

Yeah I was thinking the same after I posted. The built in Rogue Trader scenario was a skirmish which was about 10 Marines against a similar number of orcs. I seem to remember the marine leader was Rogal Dorn or someone, but his stats were barely above the regular marines. Since I basically only played games with 1-2 mates, we never worried too much about the letter of the rules, so we'd be pretty flexible about fielding wierd mixes of units that probably weren't allowed together. I definitely had a Harlequins squad on my Marine side, because I wanted the Harlequins models. Maybe something in White Dwarf justified it. This was the one I had. Which only came with Warlord titans (with a bunch of modular weapons) but I added a couple of Warhounds and some Eldar titans over the years. thumbs.worthpoint.com/zoom/images3/1/1115/09/1988-warhammer-40k-adeptus-titanicus_1_9017fe209ed20a9237c3a0fdf226910f.jpgoh, and this Space Marine box set, though I added a bunch of Eldar tanks form somewhere, and some eldar knights. The cardboard buildings in this, and the astrogranite (polystyrene) ones in AT, were cool. Epic became a lot more about garrisoning in buildings or making sure you were *always* in cover behind a building when there were big ass titans stomping around.

Epic 40K and Epic Armageddon are superior. Basically 3rd and 4th edition. Now that's a boxset

Well you're dead wrong. Best rules GW ever did: Epic 40K - Jervis Johnson's best work Battlefleet Gothic - Andy Chamber's best work Warmaster - Rick Priestly's best work.
They never came close again really.

I will say that the newer releases have really been a return to form. Dominion and Indomitus are superb. Lovely models, good rulebook full of lore, sensible changes to the rule sets. It’s just a shame it all went down in the middle of a pandemic so no one could play.

Oh man, this has been educational. I knew the "Rogue Trader" era had some mental stuff, but I didn't realise they did limited edition stuff like:
Space Santa:
Chaos Santa:
Dark Future Santa:
Wizard with submachine gun:
Space Skeleton:
Christmas Marine with Bolter and Beer:
---
EDIT:
I had genuinely forgotten that blister packs used to have sponge:
