It seems like there are a fair few parents here, so I wondered if anyone had any recommendations to play with kids? (6y - 12y in my case) They are obviously obsessed with Minecraft and Fortnite, because all kids are. Other ones that I've had success with have been: Lego games (Star Wars, Harry Potter...) - Great to play coop for any age. The only issue is spoilers for the franchises they're based on. Overcooked 1 - Great fun - or massive arguments and threats to turn off the game if people don't stop shouting  will try Overcooked 2 at some point. Human Fall Flat - Great fun in split screen, but you do have to grab the Steam version if you want access to the thousands of fan-made levels. Some of the built-in levels are a bit too hard and puzzle-y for little kids. Micro Mages - retro NES game from the BLM itch bundle. Fun for up to 4 players, though frustratingly tough at times. Dying turns you nto a ghost who can help or be resurected though, which softens the blow. Just Dance - Well, it's great fun for the kids... it's just exhausting for me ;-) Mario Kart 64 - but I guess any version would be equally fun. Somewhat less successful: Ibb and Obb - cute coop puzzle game, but got a bit too repetitive and hard for the kids at later levels. Ok in small doses. Child of Light - Absolutely beautiful hand drawn side scrolling game seemingly designed for gamer dads to play with their kids. Asymetric roles where one handles the main movement and combat and the other helps out. Should be perfect... but ruined by the crazy decision to try and make all the writing in rhyming verse, which not only makes it incomprehensible to kids, but is also very tortured and straight up badly written. (There is *one* good joke about the jester character who speaks strangely... by not rhyming and speaking normally). Combat is surprisingly hard timeline-based JRPG style, though the kids did seem to pick most of it up). Such a shame.  |

Toy Story 3 is great, especially "Toybox" mode
Fable series, especially 2 in co-op, probably for the older child though.

There's a potential whole new thread about 'games to play one-handed while holding a baby'. I don't remember exactly, but I think basically around the start of elementary school, which is age 6 here. I think that's when we started with Mario Kart 64 and Lego Harry Potter. My daughter got obsessed with Hermione and Harry Potter around that time. My son was younger, as always with the second child, because they're watching and want to join in. Everyone at his kindergarten got obsessed with Minecraft when he was about age 5 I think. Oh, actually, I just remembered that one of the first games I played with them was Wii Sports Resort. I wanted a game that could be played together, was non-violent, and had some physical activity, so it was perfect. That was probably ages 6 and 3. Toy Story 3 is great, especially "Toybox" mode sounds great and I'd never heard of it. Though unfortunately a quick look on Steam implies that the version there is pretty inferior. Which platform did you play it on? |

The one handed holding a baby games began and ended with Football Manager and Civ for me.
I’ll endorse the OPs picked and add Unravel 2. The first is good too but doesn’t have coop. The story doesn’t really transfer over so you don’t need to have played the first.
Not sure they count as it’s more party games but any of the Jackbox games bundles are good or the ever popular Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes once they’re 12 or so.

I'll second the recommendation for Toy Story 3- we played it on x360 and it's back/forward compatible so it's available for XBox One/ Series. Another great x360 back compat game is Sonic And All stars Racing Transformed.
Currently playing through Rain On Your Parade with my youngest, it's on Game Pass and the controls are nice and simple.
Middle kid (10) has a Switch and as well as the obvious 1st party stuff (Mariokart, Odyssey, 3d World) there's quite a few fun little co-op games we've picked up recently:
Ultimate Chicken Horse- clever idea where you take turns adding components to a platforming level and then try to beat it
Boomerang Fu- top-down multiplayer combat
Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes- Describe a bomb and use a manual to defuse it
My oldest only really plays Fortnite and Mariokart, although we used to also spend a lot of time on Rocket League.

Mario Party is pretty fun on the Switch. Our family have played it a lot. Also Smash Bros. has provde unexpectedly popular. Snipperclips used to be enjoyed, but they've not played that for a while and I keep trying to get them to play BomberMan. Mostly though its Mario Kart.

Me and my boy absolutely loved playing through Unravel 2 together on the Switch last year (he was 7 at the time), I highly recommend that. Fantastically responsive and fun controls and gameplay, with a difficulty level just about right.
Heave Ho is an absolute hoot whether you're playing against (race to the end) or genuine co-op, tears of laughter guaranteed. That and Among Us were our family go-to games over Christmas last year, great stuff.
Right now I am having trouble getting him off Rocket League and Fortnite... he's a competetive lad by nature, I think he just wants that online adrenaline rush. Kinda depressing really.... I'm working on it!

Started off with Minecraft with mine (the mash up packs in particular were brilliant, like greek/egyptian/norse mythology worlds - we would just explore them and end up reading up on the respective mythologies after) when he was 5 or 6 and pretty much played that for years before moving on to Terraria. I never got into fortnite so never played that with him but he plays that with his mates anyway. As mentioned in the OP, Human Fall Flat is great and has probably given us more laughs than anything. But I do think it was mainly Minecraft we played.
These days now he's a bit older (11) we play dark souls and he's started diablo 2 as well, although he had me on the crew 2 with him last night.

It's just me being an old fart to be honest! They are both great games. It's just that he shows absolutely zero interest now in playing anything else which is my "depressing" part. In the past he has put 100+ hours into BotW and smashed games like Odyssey and Links Awakening, but I can't even get him to try anything else right now. But I know I'm in "old man shouting at clouds" territory!

@wuntyate My son has a bit of an issue with frustration when he plays difficult games- shouting and getting upset or (worse) saying "the game glitched" when it clearly didn't. I can't begin to imagine how he'd respond to Dark Souls!

Fair enough- it's the same with my eldest- middle kid wants to try new games all the time but she just does the 2 or 3 she likes, and actually she *only* does multiplayer, she'd never sit down and play through a masterpiece like BOTW even though she's missing out. |

My youngest is obsessed with Mario & Sonic Tokyo Olympics, but then she's obsessed with anything Sonic (including Unleashed.....).
Mario Party is a favourite when all three youngest (6/11/12) are playing. Looking forward to the new one actually.

My twin boys are coming up for 5 and we now play some co-op games together. The games they've liked the best so far have been Minecraft Dungeons and Gang Beasts which are handily both on gamepass though I did upgrade Minecraft D. to ultimate edition as it's been such a hit with them. One of my lads is perhaps a bit too obsessed with Minecraft Dungeons, though he's probably taking after his dad with his love of Arpg's. This is great fun to play with them though and you can kind of excuse it as there is some learning involved with the numbers, spelling of words etc. Gang Beasts or as it has now been officially titled "The one where you throw each other off the cliff" has proven to be hilarious. |

My kid loves "Cake Bash"
I got a free spare controller from Stadia so thats how we play it. It was like 10 quid.
We remove all the bots and I pretend Im silly and don't know what to do and my kid wins and loves it.

Went back to it a year later and it clicked to the extent that he's better than me at all of it. He's now done DS1-3, Bloodborne and Sekiro! He reminded me this morning that other games we played a lot was the Skylanders ones. I think he had 3 or 4 of them in total, we've got a whoel bag of figures upstairs. They were pretty good fun actually and the figures are great. Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 1, 2 and Battle for Neighborville are good fun as well. |

All the Lego games were great for co-op. Skylanders was good - now it's PES, Rocket League only I guess. He's just started playing Splitgate too.
We're in that tricky age (11) where he wants to play games that are older (i.e. 16 and 18) but I am reluctant. I've relented on a few (Spiderman mostly) but don't really want to give him the keys to gore and violence just yet. He loves story-driven 3rd person games - any that may be acceptable?

ABZU has been my favourite gaming experience with my daughter (7) - she absolutely loved it, as did I.
Beautiful game and music - she saw more as a cinematic experience, so was happy for me to play and her to tell me where to go.

DougsKena, Immortals, Ratchet & Clank, all the Zeldas, Gravity Rush, Team ICO stuff Depending on how you fair with fantasy/comicbook violence: Horizon, Jedi Fallen Order, Avengers, Batman Arkham, Shadow of War, Infamous, Uncharted (maybe too far but other than shooting I don't remember much actual violence in the first games). I initially thought Darksiders but these are rated 18???

My kids mostly just play Minecraft (my 9yo wants to be a Minecraft YouTuber, which I guess isn't much different from me wanting to be an actor or something when I was her age). But they also really enjoyed the two Disney games on Game Pass, Disneyland Adventure and Rush: A Disney-Pixar Adventure, which combine gentle wandering with very simple third-person action/adventure levels. They've played Rush a lot more, although I think Disneyland might be better as you can wander round the park collecting things and finding secrets, although it's possible the minigames aren't as good. Arguably they also skew a bit young. Most if not all of the mini-games can be played two player.
Weirdly enough my youngest (now six) really likes Zoo Tycoon on sandbox mode, just plonking big habitats down, buying animals, and tooling round the park in a golf cart.
Other games they've liked in the past year or two include Pokemon Sword, Pokemon Snap, Yooka-Laylee, Human Fall Flat, Roblox, The Sims 3 (mostly they just like creating the families), Stardew Valley, Ooblets, Untitled Goose Game, and even the "Discovery Tour" bits of Assassin's Creed (which have no violence or owt). I also sometimes let them play Halo with me in local games, but really they just like teaming up and hitting me with the flag, which they find hilarious.
