We're in that tricky age (11) where he wants to play games that are older (i.e. 16 and 18) but I am reluctant. I've relented on a few (Spiderman mostly) but don't really want to give him the keys to gore and violence just yet. He loves story-driven 3rd person games - any that may be acceptable? See that was honestly my intention as well, yet he's now somehow playing CoD Warzone with all his school mates. I'm not sure when I took my eye off the ball but there you go. He's fairly well adjusted though, stays away from the single played campaigns on the CoD stuff, isn't allowed GTA or anything like that and generally is only exposed to more fantasy violence, which he can deal with (see Bloodborne further up). All his school mates were playing GTA from about the age of 7 and watching stuff like IT so I know he's at least not that bad. It got to the point that they all moved on to Warzone from Fortnite and he was feeling left out so I had to make a choice. It's not ideal though and I can't say I feel amazing about it but there you go.

I think within the first 5 minutes we had naked men being hosed down in the prison showers, a few f-bombs and a blood splattered brawl in the prison yard. Nipped that one in the bud pretty quick! From that point I've made an effort to a least do a bit of research on any new games

I have a 9 yo lad, nearly 10 and he's been raised the right way. This summer we have completed Dark Souls 1 & 2 and are right at the end of 3. It's been emotional. It's been fucking amazing. Honestly, possibly my best summer ever and we couldn't even bloody go anywhere.
He's developed and learned so much in 3 months. He used to play shit like Roblox, now he has taste and skill. Other games he's loved are Zelda BOTW, The Last Guardian and Minecraft Dungeons.
Sekiro will be up next. Then Elden Ring, oh are we excited for Elden Ring. I also have a PS5 in the loft for Xmas day with Demons Souls lined up.

ToonMonkey co-opping the souls stuff with my boy is genuinely the best fun ever, so I totally get it. It's often hilarious as well.

My 5 year old just doesn’t get the controls for anything even slightly difficult or there’s any speed involved. She tried Art of Rally yesterday and drove at 1 mph off the side of a cliff.
Katamari Damacy seems ok for her, she’s rubbish at it but doesn’t care. The ball moves around and things stick to it.
Too many of those that could be ok have so many cutscenes and things that get in the way of playing them that it’s frustrating.

These bloody rolling rock lizard things on Archdragon Peak keep comedically knocking us both off the side of cliffs. I'll mock him for getting knocked off, the he wets himself when it's my turn and off the cliff I go. In fact he loves it generally when I die aaagh! He loves the show, don't tell storytelling and world and loves the way all the weapons have their own stories, move-sets etc. We spend so long debating weapons and rating them heh. His current top 3 is Fume UGS, Black Knight UGS and Claymore!

Oh yes the old turn it down a bit to ensure they win, then when you turn it on on occasion you can completely own them, the noobs! Speaking from experience - be careful how much you do this, because one day you'll turn it on and you'll still lose... In contrast, one of my highest rated comments back on EG was about how I'd play Sonic And Allstars Racing Transformed with my daughter and (unlike some other PvP games we played) I'd always give it 100%. She didn't mind always coming second, and then when she finally beat me on her own skill, it was a wonderful bonding moment for both of us. (She now absolutely outclasses me at both Fortnite and Mariokart. But I'm still top dog on Sonic Racing, I was robbed, lucky powerups etc etc)

He's 11 now but been playing them for a year or so. He also loves the world and everything about the way they work, how they connect, the various weapons styles and huge bosses. It's hilarious as we're currently back messing about in DS1 and we keep getting invaded in NG+ Oolacile. I keep needing to summon him in to kill invaders for me as he's ten times better than me these days.
Still remember last winter when we both took on Midir at the same time (but individually - fuck that guy with summons) and the joy when he killed him about 2 minutes after I did.

Reading this is making me want to try Dark Souls with my 10yo... doing it co-op style and taking turns never occurred to me, but that might be a good way of dealing with his anger issues when something's too hard. And the beautiful, undeniable thing about Dark Souls is when you die, it never feels like you were cheated, you always understand what you did wrong and how to improve

Yeah, warzone is the next one on his list. I said "no" immediately but on reading up, you can cut the in-game swearing and blood out it seems. So I may relent on that. I'm generally fine with fantasy stuff - but want to keep.l him away from Uncharted, Tomb Raider and others where shooting so blatantly in the face is such a bit part of the game.

Yeah man, honestly Warzone was on my "not a fucking chance" list as well but once you disable the worst bits it's not too much different from the likes of Fortnite, albeit in a more realistic setting.

Although it was obvious that it clicked very early on as I needed to help him less and less and he began to help me more and more. But as ToonMonkey says, it's one of the most hilarious and gratifying co-op experiences ever. Second only to Human Fall Flat, which is the absolute pinnacle of toomfoolery as far as we're concerned.

Interesting, didn't know you could cut out some of the edgier bits of Warzone. COD has also been on my nee chance list. More than happy with swords and fantasy, not keen on realistic guns and shooting in the face.
Tbh not sure he needs another Fortnite style game, he already plays Fortnite more than I'd like.
Is Warzone good?

He likes it but it all depends on his mates. He only plays that and Fortnite with boys he knows so if they're all getting on = great time. If they're shouting at each other = bad time.

He did try to get me to play it with him once and it didn't go to well. Turns out my aged reflexes are a massive liability. I bloody hate online competitive shooters though.

The key to fortnite with the kids is teamwork. I let them run towards the enemy and act as decoys/bullet Shields while I stand at the back with a rifle picking them off then revive and repeat.

Nintendo Labo stuff - my 4 year old loves it, such a faff though! Mario Odyssey - he loves to watch and tell me where to go. Astros Playroom - as above Minecraft Oh, I love Labo! We got my eldest a kit for her birthday last year, during lockdown, and she really took to it, making the fishing rod and house and everything. Thought it was going to be a big "thing" for her so bought her the VR set for Christmas and... nowt. She's totally lost interest in any kind of craft/making. I think her little sister would be more into it, though, as she's really into Lego, so I've persuaded Daughter #1 to let her build it instead, if she wants.

Hahaha your dynamic sounds different to mine, pretty sure my daughter uses me as the useless aggro-draw, while she builds a tower then jumps down and destroys the other squad with shotgun headshots. Last season I played a bit of Fortnite solo on her profile because she was trying to finish the battle pass before it ended... and I really noticed the step up in difficulty. You might assume it's a randomised lobby of 100 each time but I don't think it is, I was getting absolutely wasted most of the time playing on her profile, then I went back to more consistent top-10 finishes on mine.

My kids are 6, 4 & 2 so they mostly enjoy watching me play games like Mario, Zelda, Last Guardian & Untitled Goose.
We started playing Luigi's Mansion 3 in the lead up to Halloween and things came a bit unstuck after I was killed by the first miniboss; there's a brief cutscene with King Boo that shows Luigi trapped in a picture frame. The 2 year old started asking, in an increasingly panicked tone, why Luigi was 'stuck in the picture', he's now having nightmares about it.

My kids are 17 and 13 now, Have kind of been through a whole process here, starting with ‘give them a controller that isn’t plugged in whilst you play’ and ending with one of them beating Dark Souls for fun just to try out new builds, and the other completing Spider-Man on the hardest difficulty.
Not sure what advice I would give though. Not entirely sure whether I got it right!

My kids are 15 and 12 and we play a lot of 4 player party games as a family.
Some favourites are:
- Towerfall Ascension - Speedrunners - Nippon Marathon - Moving Out - Overcooked 1 and 2 - Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime - Stikbold - Frantics (played with phones)
Plus some Switch entries; Mario Kart/Party, Super Smash Bros.
All of these have provided many fun weekend afternoons.

I have three children aged 5-8 and I am very disappointed with them. I try to get them to study the art of gaming, but they want to draw, play outside or just happily interact with each other. I'm mean for fucks sake! Where did all this wholesome shit come from?! When I do get them to have a go they are incredibly shit at any 3D games. Put on something from the early 80s like PacMan and Bubble Bobble and they fecking love it! Something to be said about the simplicity of old arcade games I guess. Not sure what I have contributed here though, I should probably go to sleep; the little buggers/darlings will be up in a few hours, ugh.

My son is 6. We’ve dabbled with Sonic, but usually the pad gets passed to me. The Lego games, especially Dimensions, always go down well. He loves the Marvel Spider-Man games (running and webbing around, he doesn’t care about the storyline).
He also loves Yakuza Kiwami and Zero, again not the story missions, but the racing mini game and the restaurants. Just need to be wary of the subtitles. Probably wouldn’t recommend that one to be honest.

My 13 year old daughter loves to play Planet Coaster with me. We take it in turns. I usually end up building path layouts and managing prices. She fine tunes the roller coasters as I have a tendency to build fear inducing, stomach churning monstrosities that no one will ride. I get ordered about. “Put it there, move that, yes that looks good.” It’s a lovely wholesome shared experience.

My niece is four years old and, without any prompting, has taken to watching Mario Kart let’s plays on YouTube. I still think she might be a bit young for Kart but am thinking odyssey co-op might be a good entry level game for her.
