I watched a 4K (non hdr version) of the House of the dragon finale last night on my Samsung QN95 Neo Mini Led. It looked fantastic, no problems with dark scenes, it must have been because it was non HDR.

It's not the whole show. I mean, it is generally dimmer than other HDR shows, but you can usually see everything clearly and it has some incredible highlights when say, there's fire or an orange sky or something.
It was specifically episode 7 that looks like it was filmed in a closet.

GoT I watched on my plasma back in the day, but don't remember it being unwatchable either

Crazy own goal. HBO had to issue a statement on it.

Hey guys, not so much tech advice but more cabinet advice - thinking of getting a 43” TV to go to the left of the fireplace… are cabinets with doors to hide the TV a thing any more? I can’t find anything other than super expensive custom builds for many thousands :/ i.imgur.com/oAyqJ79.jpg

Blizeh! It's tricky as obviously you want airflow. ozthegweat is your man here I think. But when I be searched before, it's a custom job but doable relatively cheaply depending on materials.

Well, airflow isn't really important if the device isn't used/turned on while the cabinet is closed.
If you want something cheap that also serves as a good base to possibly modify, Ikea is your go-to store. I didn't invest more than a few minutes, but it seems like something like Knoxhult would fit a 43" TV and is cheap.
If you want to add more devices and keep them running while closed (NAS, server etc.) it needs to be ventilated, either actively or passively (like with slatted sides and/or doors).

It's the TV he wants to hide, right? I would agree that isn't as common.
Maybe try Wayfair. They have insane amount of different items.

Ah yes, must read betterer. I'd forgotten all about the 70s and 80s TV cabinet phase.
If I was wanting discreet, perhaps the Sammys that turn into a mirror would work? No idea what they are like as actual TVs though.

Yeah, I was thinking about recommending Samsung's Frame TV, but that'd be both an investment in a new TV AND a tv stand for his devices. But getting one of the wood grain bezels and setting it to art mode seems like the easiest way to fool guests.
FWIW, I think they're meant to be as good as the QLEDs.

Thanks so much guys! Just spent a bit of time looking on IKEA and have decided to change tact a bit and have the TV wall mounted then cover it up with some sort of picture/canvas
Do any of you know a 50 TV that sits super close to the wall? Frame is the obvious choice but we’d not use the art mode so feels a shame to pay extra. Not fussed on specs as whatever we buy will likely be a big improvement on what we have… although something that dims automatically would be amazing too

LG G series is 20mm thin. Quite expensive though. Maybe you can find a GX (2020 model) or G1 (2021 model), which is cheaper than this year's G2. But the smallest size is 55" (although with a very thin border).

Unfortunately 50” is the absolute biggest we can go and even that’s pushing it - wife was really keen on 43” and to be honest I’m not sure 55” would fit above the fireplace anyway

My refurbished A95K arrived. It's gorgeous, the colours are superb and skin tones very natural. I have noticed a small mark on the panel which fortunately is only visible when the TV is off and light is shining on it directly. I can live with that I think.
Also managed to sell my old tv to a friend and avoid eBay. Now tempted to try and get a refurbished HT-A9 to finish the setup. Really like the concept which should solve the problem of an irregular living room layout.
The sound from the new TV is more or less as good as my current 2.1 setup (would be a 5.1.2 but I couldn't find a girlfriend acceptable way of routing the cables to the rears or height speakers post house move).

Wow, nice - the A95K looks like one hell of a TV!

The logo detection feature definitely dims just the logos on my C1. I agree about turning off all the other dimming/pixel shift stuff but I'd 100% leave on the logo dimming one. If you're using it for gaming it's an absolute no brainer (HUDs etc.) Vincent's latest video explains what I meant regarding the logo detection dimming the whole screen on OLEDs. You can fully turn it off in the service menu on LGs.

Have to say I haven't noticed the logo dimming on my new Sony yet. It must be pretty subtle.
The only content I've watched and felt disappointed by was the final episode of house of the dragon. Too dark and almost as bad as ep 7 in places. Went back and rewatched a bit of ep7 with the new TV just for comparison. To confirm, it isn't much better on a QD-LED. That series really is just badly graded.
Currently playing Ghost of Tsushima and the HDR and colours are superb but I'm also really noticing how much better game mode is on a 2022 TV in general. Not response time (it's barely different) just smoother (not sure if it's VRR or the TV's faster processor keeping more motion tech on) whilst still looking sharp and 'clean'. On my old tv I could see a clear drop off in image quality with game mode on. Now I can't.

Noticed the other day (watching spirited) that Apple TV have added HDR10+ support. It does seem to make a difference Vs HDR10, hopefully more services will start to pick it up - surely there must be enough Samsung owners out there to warrant it? 😁
I assume it's possible to have Dolby Vision as well as HDR10+ so why choose (or why not choose the more widely supported version)?

Apparently the LG G3 OLEDs are 70% brighter, suggesting the are including the new MLA tech.

Also interesting that these are the first TVs that support Quick Media Switching.

And Samsung are releasing a brighter 77” QD-OLED. Without seeing how they all compare this one is immediately very interesting as I reckon it’ll cheaper than the above too. No DV is always irritating though.

How can I connect my Blu-ray player (which has a coaxial audio out) to my amp (which has the following inputs: aux, line in, and optical)?

No DV is always irritating though. I don’t think the Samsung will be cheaper. They priced the S95B competitively because it was first year tech and they wanted to take some shine off LG, but with there now being an S95C and an S90C, I can see the 90 getting last year’s model pricing and the 95 being the premium option.

Or Blu-ray - HDMI to TV - out to amp via a different connector, if they're all fairly close. This may introduce lag, I'm not sure.

If there is lag you could compensate given it isn't "live" like gaming signal would be.

Gang, I should be moving house soon. Need a new TV. Ditched our last one, which was a 48" 1080p jobbie.
What are the got TVs at the moment? Is there price-performance sweet spot at the moment? Thinking 4K, HDR, blah blah blah. Want it for gaming, movies, etc. I reckon I've got a £1k budget, similar size to last one, but could be convinced to go higher on budget if extras are worth it.

You'll get a sweet LG OLED for that. Tbh, it's the sum of my knowledge but don't think anyone here with one has been disappointed.

Up to around 55" and shopping around your two options are OLED (LG, Samsung etc.) or Samsung QLED Neo Mini LED 9 series. You can't go wrong with either but the Font Geek hive mind will make you buy an LG OLED
