Reasonable, but still feels cheap imo.

I agree. I think only LG gives you 2.1 on all four. Sony limits it to two, and you run into the eARC issue I mentioned above.

TV has arrived. All good so far . It's insanely bright which is what I was wanting. It has a tiny bit of DSE(dirty screen effect) but that is to be expected I think. Zero connection issues which I had with the 95. The consoles "just work" the pc was a bit of a faff to setup . Halo/Forza looking stunning on the Series X. Slight drawback is the single 2.1 hdmi but will get a switcher when they appear. How is the viewing angle? This is what would be the killer, I backed off this TV because I read that VA panels have poor angles but then I read that this TV specifically was actually really good. Also, do you really need 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs? Sounds like ps5 doesn't take advantage of any of the features (at least not yet). Viewing angle is fine. I've been watching some football on it this afternoon though and the DSE is quite annoying so it might be worth taking into account depending on what you watch. I've connected the xbox to a non 2.1 socket an it looked fine. No vrr but looks great and no tearing etc. The dse might be a deal breaker for me but for gaming its the business.

I think that if i didn’t have an OLED I’d look at the LG NANO range as well as the Samsungs. Different again, but pros and cons to all the formats.

I almost went for a Samsung Neo Qled when their pricing went about crazy a few weeks before BF with employee discounts and codes (pretty sure 65" went down to about 1200 for the QN94 and a touch more for 95.
Don't know whether they honoured the prices though as I passed on the end and went OLED with the Sony A84J as I got a screen burn cover included in the warranty so felt a bit safer and wasn't too sure about the local dimming things with NEOQLED. Quite happy with it so far but need a PS5 to attach.
Chose it over LG due to better handling of 24 FPS films and upscaling and not likely to need more than 2 HDMI 2.1s any time soon (and not using one on a soundbar as happy enough with TV sound).
Now I just need enough time off work to use it myself...

As soon as you get a decent sound set up, you'll wonder why you put up with TV speakers ...adds more to films than the jump to UHD imo.

How did I live without a subwoofer?
Agree with Dougs.

I am still using an old set of Trust stereo speakers from 1995 on my PC that were only about 25 quid back then... Really not an audiophile The Sony TVs are supposed to be on the better end of OLED sound qualities (excluding soundbar etc of course)

Pretty much all my gaming / movie watching is using a decent set of Bluetooth headphones so I don't wake the Mrs or kids up and as such never felt the need to invest in a soundbar.
Find my built in ones on the CX pretty adequate anyway and headphones mean I can go really LOUD and still get the details.

Audiophile is not the opposite of accepting no actual bass sounds...

I'd even say I prefer watching/playing with mid range headphones over a high end sound system.

I actually like it when a soundtrack is done in proper surround sound, sounds better than stereo music, for sure.

Just looked up some reviews to make sure I wasn't given false information, and you're right! Usually, the eARC port takes up one of the 2.1 ports when 2.1 is limited to a couple, but Samsung was smart and put the eARC and 2.1 on separate ports, so you should be able to use both without issue. My mistake! This is "smart" only if you don't use a receiver. If you want to connect all devices to the receiver, you either can't use 2.1 or you can't use your home theatre speakers when using the TV's built-in apps (or need to resort to using optical audio, so no Atmos). This is why most manufacturers make the eARC port a 2.1 one. Baffling that 2.1 across the board isn't standard yet. Meanwhile, the TVs LG will announce next month will be their fourth (!) year of 2.1-only TVs.

I'd even say I prefer watching/playing with mid range headphones over a high end sound system. yeah, my amtos system is ridiculous, probably cost me £10k but it needs to be loud for proper appreciation. Headphone processing tech is so good though that I don’t care

If your surround set-up cost £10k but has to be loud to be appreciated it’s the wrong definition of ridiculous.

You hear that argument a lot from guitar players, the really good amps only sound good when cranked up to 200dB

I'd even say I prefer watching/playing with mid range headphones over a high end sound system. If you’re on a limited budget, it’s where you’re better off putting your money. You get a much better bang for your buck. Spend like 300 quid on a pair of headphones and an amp and you’d have to spend thousands on AV gear to top it.

I paid $500 for my soundbar. Not sure what that is in £, 350 or so? And while I'm sure it doesn't match a full home theatre system, it's miles better than listening through the TV speakers. The THWONK when Thor's hammer beans someone in Avengers is so satisfying.

I think I’m going to get the Q94 neo. Can you let me know when you have yours as I’d be interested in what you think, pros and cons. I’m not bothered about the 4 2.1 hdmis, one will do for me. Will do. It's coming Friday. The cashback thing runs until the 24th. Did it arrive and are you all set up?

I've got a full 5.1 system using old hifi speakers for front, a decent sized wall mounted pair for rear and a big centre and sub. Right now I have a pioneer AV Receiver that was about £180 a few years ago and supports almost everything but falls over with passing through Dolby Vision which my qled TV supports. So anything I acquire for playback through Plex with DV displays in pink and green. I tried using arc on TV but the amp doesn't support eARC so any 7.1 truehd audio streams in Plex get transcoded which I'm trying to avoid.
So comes the main point of this post. Can anyone recommend a nice new AV Receiver/amp that supports all the nice modern things but doesn't cost a ridiculous amount of money?

I had always been a big fan of Yamaha AV amps, bought a DSP-A2 in 1999 and it's still in use today as a stereo amp in the bedroom. Only upgraded it when I needed HDMI switching to another Yamaha (RX-V3800). I then needed to replace that when I wanted 4K/HDR passthrough and Atmos.
I auditioned a few Yamahas but came away with a Denon AVR-X3400H which I have been more than happy with. Saying that, it doesn't do 4k60 and VRR passthrough but that isn't really causing an issue as I use eARC back from my TV for the Series X and PS5.
The newer models support the latest HDMI specs, but if you are just in need of eARC then an older model may suffice if you can find one on discount.

Will do. It's coming Friday. The cashback thing runs until the 24th. Did it arrive and are you all set up? Yes mate. From a gaming point of view its the business. Insanely bright which is what I wanted. The Xbox is fine even on the non 2.1 input. The fly in the ointment is the DSE (dirty screen effect) which shows itself on football which I do watch a lot of. If it's primarily for gaming I doubt there's anything else out there that's comparable . On the fence if I'll keep it. John Lewis are happy to replace it but the dse is common on these tv's apparently. I was considering the Sony equivalent but it hasn't got the gaming features as yet. (vrr etc)

It’s an inconsistent union of the sandwich of layers of an lcd panel, any microscopic fluctuation in how parallel the layers are will result in inconsistent light transmission

I wasn't aware what causes it but looks like dark patches and is more apparent on panning shots of solid colours. Obviously football shows it up more. Samsung tv's seem to be plagued with it. Some more than others. The QN95 had it worse than the 94. Reluctantly I think I'll be returning it. It is a bit of a lottery and you might end up with a good one. If it was just for gaming I'd have kept it. Will have to make do with the "dull" oled until Sony get's their act together I think.

You can remedy it by loosening the bolts on the back panel apparently. I figure this is the current “stuck pixel” thing that manufacturers try to fob us off with as within spec, the more get returned the more they have to sort their shit out
