Been rewatching the final episodes of Whittaker’s run. She’s definitely my number 2 Doctor of the modern era. Its a real shame that there was so much backlash against her considering how fun some of the stuff she does is after two fairly grim sad Doctors.
They do need to lay off the end of the universe stories for a bit. Just let the new guy have some adventures before his companions fall in love with him and some huge calamity occurs.

I didn't mind some of the episodes, I don't think she's a bad actor. I don't know if it was to do with stories or direction she got, but to me she came across as a primary school teacher going enthusiastic with her class of ten year olds, or if she was trying to bring the energy of Tennant or manic Smith. But it just didn't convince me. I think if they had gone with a completely different tone, like Capaldi, she may have had more success. Maybe I'm just a misogynist, who knows?

I was always quite liked her in the role, but the stories were terrible. There was the odd one here and there that weren't too bad, particularly towards the end, but it was still mostly a bit of drag to watch them.
I'm weird and really loved the Capaldi era though, so what do I know.

We recently finished re watching her entire run, and I have to say I enjoyed it a lot more the second time around. I think it was because I went in with much lower expectations this time around so was able to appreciate it for what it was.
I think the biggest issue with it was Graham and his old man energy dragging everything down. They should have binned him off earlier and perhaps not replaced with another slightly less old man and Ryan was just dull. Without them I could have happily had another series with her as the doctor.
That said, her run still should have been better than it was. Hopefully having Russell back in charge will give it the boost it needs, and failing that at least we can play the Russell T drinking game again - you have to have a shot everytime he needlessly shoehorns something gay into the script.

They've just announced a new mini series starring old Doctors and their companions. No idea how that's going to work continuity-wise but I first got into Who with Seven and Ace so seeing them in another new adventure is really exciting.

The completionist in me is saying start it all from the beginning but my more rational side is saying focus on McCoy (my Doctor), Pertwee and Tom Baker (the two I watched most in reruns).

You can't start it from the beginning anyway, they don't have the first episode 😉

I thought the new miniseries would just be glorified dvd extra clip shows to introduce modern era fans to the old stuff but they’re 90 minutes long each. I’m guessing that they are still clip shows to an extent but anyone given one a go yet?

BBC Four at 7:30 tonight
As part of the sixtieth anniversary celebrations of Doctor Who, David Tennant time-travels back through the BBC archives to tell the story of the Doctor’s classic era, with a selection of rarely seen interviews and clips covering William Hartnell’s first incarnation right through to the seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy.

David Tennant now being only two or three years younger than Hartnell was at the beginning is a bit of a mindbender

I may as well pause all my other subscriptions for a while as i can’t resist watching old episodes. So far I’ve rewatched Genesis of the Daleks, Talons of Weng Shiang and Tomb of the Cybermen. Aside from the obvious limitations of the day, they’re all fantastic episodic serials, even if they do Flash Gordon it a bit by re-writing the cliffhangers. Seeds of Doom next I think.

I started with Daleks thinking I’d dip in and out of different serials and ended up watching Edge of Destruction and Keys of Marinus too.
I might start skipping soon though. My general memory is that the histories are a bit dry and Web Planet is shite. Mainly I’m with the first for the early Dalek and Cybermen stories, plus the Time Meddler.
Treated myself to Spearhead from Space this evening. Nostalgia talking head shows always have comedians and tv z-listers pretending they hid behind the sofa when the Daleks were on but these Autons genuinely did shit me up as a kid when I first saw them.

That article isn’t fully clear.
First it says: “not just one, but two of the early BBC adventures” Which suggests all the episodes of a story being recovered
But then it says: “The episodes” Which suggests just two episodes

You would think it wpuld be fairly straightforward and beenficial for the BBC to issue an actual amnesty though as it could gain them some more episodes from the people more likely to share for preservation than hardcore collectors who are more likely to want something no-one else has.

It would seem a no brainier to issue an amnesty, but perhaps it’s not straightforward. There may be collectors who did a bit of “innocent” theft in order to save things from the skip, but there may also be cases of deliberate theft that the BBC knows about and they may not be keen on people getting away with it, or even profiting from it.
Perhaps the clean room approach may be a way forward: independent archivists like Kaleidoscope have the ability to restore and transfer old formats into modern forms. Perhaps they could offer a no questions asked service. Someone brings their episode in for transfer and afterwards the owner gets it back while a copy gets passed to the BBC. Seems like a win-win to me.

Yeah, I’m not sure anyone is really benefitting from the current approach as the number of missing episodes becomes smaller and smaller you’d need to be pretty myopic to want to hold onto it at the expense of everyone else and surely the BBC having complete stories must be of greater value to the corporation than pursuing 50+ year old bin dipping incidents.

My accidental rewatch has reached The Web Planet. Both races are easy contenders for worst special effect and they’re so big there’s nowhere to hide. I’m pretty sure this is what my wife thinks all Doctor Who is like. and to be fair the heroes are both trapped in a cave *and* have been taken prisoner, which are the two plots classic Doctor Who has, so to a large extent she’s correct.

The one I usually refer to as 'Oh, that one'
Is that the one that has 'Interpretive mime artist' or some such credit at the end of it?

Finished it. Very probably the worst Doctor Who serial I can remember ever seeing.
Sets, costumes, props, acting, all terrible and the writing is a million miles away from being able to hold up a six-parter. What a slog.
