So my mate has just told me this is releasing very soon. It’s based on some very highly regarded sci fi books. I’ve not read them. Should we be looking forward to this?

I know nothing about it, but I'm all for more Sci fi.
Hopefully it's a dark and violent Sci fi.

I'm sort of surprised they made this. I have read them - interesting ideas, and generally regarded as great sci-fi, just seem a bit dry to me for a full on TV series. There are lots of other books / series I would have thought would make better choices (The Galactic Milieu and Saga of the Exiles by Julian May would be my first choice).
Not unlike other long epics, it all goes a bit off the rails in the later books too (debate as to when, just like the Dune books). Nonetheless, as a framework for TV series it might might be great, but I think it will need rather more added to the source material than usual, to make it great telly.

That would be interesting. It's all psychology and conversation in the books

From the common sense media review, lol:
"character development and action often take a back seat to philosophical debate and speculation"

The trailers made it look pretty spectacular.
I don't have apple TV but I'll try and find it somewhere.

If you have a ps5 they've been doing an extended free trial. Not sure if it's still running.

Yes, plenty of spectacular events to show certainly, just quite a lot of fairly lengthy and dry discussion of those events too.
I think it would be like trying to film the AC Clarke Rama series to a certain extent (though a very different story and setting). What takes place is amazing, history defining stuff, but the people in the middle of it may be a bit too professional and steady to be very interesting.
Maybe it will be superb. This is the upside of the 'who cares what the story is, just get it made' culture, gems will get commissioned that have been passed on many times before - this might be one.

The books were great, but it will be tough to translate to TV

It's actually a sequel to Locke where Tom Hardy finally gets his concrete pour done.

I'm guessing that it will deviate fairly hard from the books. I'm fine with that to be honest, or I will be if it's a fairly solid well-done thing in it's own right (albeit with a nod to the books on occasion). The visuals in the trailers certainly look good.

I read the foundation books when I was young and quite liked them although I remember virtually nothing about them to be honest. Will definitely be checking this out though, looks gorgeous if nothing else.

This will be literally the second thing I’ve watched on Apple TV in the four months we have had it.

I think that’s literally the only thing anyone with free sub has watched. Although, I do tell a lie I have also watched the beastie boys doc.
I suppose it’s mainly on me, though. Their content seems very worthy but I mostly just watch trash, of which there is very little.

Just finished the first book. It'll be interesting how they adapt this!
Yeah there's the dry conversations but there's also generation in between each event!

I would have far preferred the Culture series that Amazon were working on, but this'll do for a bit of hard scifi. Problem is the books are a bit fucking boring.

Well, I liked the slow world building of the first episode. Mrs Ferrino found it slow and quite boring. It's going to be a bit polarising I think. I love a bit of epic ambitious sci-fi, so hopefully it gets her on board with the next episode.

I didn’t find it that slow, I’ve never read the book/s but it felt like there were two pints of story being poured into a one pint glass so things just kept happening. Enough stuff happened in that episode to fill a ten part Netflix series. Ive just watched the second ep and they go from ‘lol exile’ to ‘here’s a fully funded project, a spaceship and a shitload of people’ in the blink of an eye.
And, tbh, I think that’s to it’s detriment. It just feels like it needed a bit more time to breathe. Decent, though.
