Quite possibly the worst trailer for a game I've ever seen. Mindbogglingly bad!

Reading the Persona 3 Reload previews has dampened my enthusiasm somewhat. Is Tartarus really as grindy and repetitive as it sounds? (In the original game, I mean - I know the remake isn't out yet!)

In the original, yeah, I found it a real slog.

I've never found Tartarus that bad tbh, could've done with a bit more visual variety which it sounds like that's what they've done with the remake

I think my other Persona training meant I did it a bit wrong. The game kinda encourages you to break it up into multiple visits by basically giving you nothing else to do in the evening and having a tiredness mechanic (that is totally broken and pointless in portable) but I always tried to do it in one visit.
But yeah, it’s just floor after floor of the same thing with bosses thrown in here and there.

I always left Tartarus when I'd had enough and never tried to do it all in one night, I wasn't trying to minmax all the social links or anything so multiple trips was ok for me. The last time I went through Portable I even went back just to grind levels as I was going for some of the high level Personas at the end of the game which I'd never done before

Yeah, I approached it like P5 where I always finished palaces as soon as possible. That really doesn't work as well in this, you need to treat it more like mementos and just dip in a few times rather than rushing through.

Cheers, chaps.
I guess the main thing that's bothering me is my antipathy for Persona 5's combat - while I loved many things about the game, its turn-based battles were not among them.
Exploring the palaces in P5 - hand-crafted spaces, each based around its ruler's foibles, with loot to collect and secrets to find - was always a joy, even though I never wanted to fight anything.
If OG Tartarus was a procedurally-generated tower that all looked the same, and had nothing much to do except battling enemies, Atlus will have had to make *massive* changes for me to fancy it.

Im guessing p3s dungeons will be like the ones in p4 where they're just random corridors over and over? Basically mementos?
I played a bit of 4 and struggled with the time management anxiety. I'm playing 5 atm though and have made it through the third palace.

That's my understanding, yeah: Mementos, except that all the side *and* main content takes place therein, instead of main quests having their own unique dungeons.
Don't get me wrong - it seems as though Atlus has done a great job with the remake, and mitigated some of the issues people had with Tartarus in the process. I think it'll be an excellent game that'll please a lot of people, but I'm no longer sure that it's for me.

Technically you don’t have to go to Tartarus at all until the end of the game except it’s the only way to level your characters. It’s not like 4 and 5 where you have to complete a set objective within a time limit. Periodically you have to do some fights separately from Tartarus so the incentive is to keep going up the tower and get stronger for those
In a way that makes it worse because you don’t know how tough the fight will be and if you aren’t strong enough when it comes then you’re screwed.

My lack of interest in fighting enemies certainly led to being underlevelled for some boss encounters during P5, which was a pain in the dick.
Does P3 let you go back in time a week or so, in order to grind levels/fuse Personas/increase bonds/etc., as P5 did when a boss proved too powerful?

I think they're adding a difficulty called "Peaceful", which is for people who just want to experience the story and social links, which sounds like what you are looking for

I have a pathological inability to play on any difficulty other than 'Normal' or its equivalent (Thanks, though.)

I have to say, July has been an annoying month in p5. The back half has barely let me hang out with confidants and it's made me miss the sun confidant 2 weeks in a row. Gits.

9/10 ratings for Persona 3 Reload from GameSpot, IGN, and Push Square.
89 score at Metacritic for the PS5 version.

You just know they're going to do a 2nd edition of this right? A P3 Reload Royal with all the missing bits and extras etc. Right? And I'm really not going to fall for the trap of buying this one and then that one in about a year, right? Right?! Oh god.

Something I haven’t seen mentioned in the reviews is whether they’ve rejigged the social links at all. Most of them were really shit and you didn’t have a choice about whether to date the girls or not

nazoFrom what I understand, they have. There are also social links (or something similar) for male companions, so you can hang out with them as well - I guess that wasn't a thing in previous versions.

I think you could if you played as the female main character but I couldn’t bring myself to play through it again

Atlus has rendered that part moot by not including the female protagonist in Reload - future DLC, perhaps?

Seems good from the first hour or so I've spent with it. Such a slick presentation. Although I made the mistake of watching some of a DF video and I can't unsee how basic the lighting is in some areas. In the dorm it's like there's just the one light source and everywhere is uniformly lit

Persona 5 was the first game I played in the persona series and Ryuji seems a lot like Junpei (character design and way he acts but not as good)

Yeah, you tend to notice similarities in characters across the games. They seem to have specific personality types that they always go to.
Mitsuru and Makato too.

Junpei is doing my head in, talks every second when in dungeon. Hoping to get another party member to replace him.
I do feel like with P5R was the expereince that makes it hard to play other persona games - even when they remade 3

Yeah, he got shitcanned as soon as possible in what little I played of P3P. Annoying little twat!
P4G was tricky to go back to after P5/P5R, and P3P was a step back too far for me. It's too early to tell with P3R, but it doesn't feel as basic as Portable least and has some nice QoL improvements.

I’m really enjoying another play through of P4G. If anything I thought P5R had a bit too much going on, I prefer the more focused core loop.
