Thanks for all the input on this front, chaps - greatly appreciated, as ever. I ended up taking AA's advice, and bumped up the difficulty with a view to getting the fight over and done with; I wasn't happy about it, but it was the best (least bad?) of the options available to me. Only having one save file - another bad gaming habit of mine! - meant I'd need to go back a week, using the option on the game over screen, and do some major grinding for levels in Mementos. Insofar as I know, XP is only awarded for combat, and... well, I think I've covered my feelings on that front in ample detail already. Even with the increased crit chance provided by the difficulty boost, it still took me a few tries to beat Okumura - the fifth wave was much easier, but the downside of dealing more crit damage is that you also *take* more crit damage, and each of the enemies in the sixth and seventh phases has a special move that can easily one-shot you, even at full health. (Cognitive Haru's self-destruct move took out Joker in one hit, even though I'd healed him to full, so I had to do the whole fight over again.) Still, it's done now. Onwards and upwards! |

So apparently the 'true' ending is locked behind (among other things) getting a particular confidant to level 8 by a certain date, and I don't think I have enough time in which to do it. Bummer!

So apparently the 'true' ending is locked behind (among other things) getting a particular confidant to level 8 by a certain date, and I don't think I have enough time in which to do it. Bummer! I wouldn't worry about Akechi, it's just an extra cutscene at the end I think. As long as you have the councillor at rank 9 to unlock the third semester you're good for the extra content I never chose to hang out with Akechi, cos he's an arsehole |

suicidaSame here! He's such a smarmy twat, so every time I had the chance to spend time with him, I noped the hell outta there. I do have Maruki at the appropriate level, though. For one thing, he seems like a nice guy, so spending time with him wasn't a chore; for another, I already knew I needed to increase his confidant ranking in order to unlock the Royal content (plus the game does a good job of hinting at that, which I don't feel was really the case with Akechi).

With regards to the Akechi stuff, I'm also at the same point in the game and remember him asking me a question that seemed important, I think I gave the answer he didn't like - I can't remember what it was, to be honest Is that what you need to do to get the proper ending? |

Aunt AlisonAs I understand it, you just need to get his confidant rank to level 8 before November 24 (although I've seen other guides say November 17, so err on the side of caution!). The last two ranks will happen automatically via story progression.

I can't remember what rank it was but I'm already in that dungeon so what's done is done
The only social link I think I haven't bothered with is the kid in the arcade. Didn't start bothering with the kid who runs the site one because he's proper weird but think I picked it up more as you need it for Mementos or something

I think the only confidant I've ignored to a greater extent than Akechi is Kawakami. I don't need a virtual world in which attractive women will only hang out with me if I pay them vast sums of money - that's what reality is for.

Ah she's great. Might have been one of my first completed ones. If I remember correctly, what you get for completing it is really useful in game as well To go out after you've been to a dungeon |

I don’t think the Akechi stuff affects the ending, as far as I remember, just whether you unlock his extra Persona.
I liked the QOL changes for Royal but I didn’t really like the extra content, it dragged things out too much. I think my opinion of P5 would actually be lower if I’d done it on my first run.

Found Ann a bit boring. The model storyline just isn't that interesting. Felt the same about the idol one in 4
My favourite character is the art one in the main group (can't remember any of their names now - been months since I played it)
I held out for Haru for my special lady friend, partly because I thought she might be good from the glimpses you got early on and wasn't feeling any of the others anyway. Everything she says is really sweet

Haru is very sweet, I'll give you that.
I liked Ann from the get-go, so she was always going to be my romance choice.
Although the entire cast is very strong, none of the other romance options felt right - Futaba is more like a kid sister than anything else, for instance, and Makoto's a bit too much of a Mary Sue for my liking.

Makoto is Poundland Mitsuru from Persona 3. Futaba is OK but she's clearly otaku bait which I just find really off putting
Haru also has the best costume!

I also went with Ann on the first play through. I was planning to go with Makoto on the 2nd but I noticed more on the 2nd play through how lovely Haru is and went with her. Also I didn't have it in me to break her heart twice.

I liked Ann because her experience resonated with me being a Japanese speaker but visibly a foreigner in Japan. It doesn’t fully match - I’m neither kikoku shijo nor a model, though I knew both on my year abroad - but it was a perspective I hadn’t seen discussed much in Japanese.

Holy shit, I did it! At least, I think I did -
I fused a Justice persona, then set to work hanging out with Akechi as much as possible. That took me from level 4 to level 7. Then, on November 16 (the day before the deadline), I got two messages from him requesting my company; one involved going to the jazz club (which proved to be a dead end), and the other involved fighting him in Mementos (which got me to level 8). According to this site, I should now be on track for the 'true' ending. Either that, or I fucked it all up... and now I've done Sae's palace, it's too late to change anything! |

I miss this game, can't justify another playthrough really but playing this and xenoblades 3 back to back was audio and visual heaven

Yup, Makoto, no question. I've played the game 2.5 times now and I still couldn't bring myself to go with someone else. I'm pretty sure I'll do the exact same thing next time.
