Grinding a few levels in Mementos before Maruki's deadline arrives. It's pretty boring stuff - hold down L2 to see what colour a given enemy is, and if it's blue, hold R2 to ram into it with the cat-bus and instakill the bastard - but the game gives you a sizeable amount of time to kill at this point, and I can only assume you're meant to use it to prepare for the final boss. |

I think that particular exploit was nerfed in Royal!
In any case, I've only encountered the enemy in question once, and got my ass handed to me - that was more than enough.
This is the only time I've done any grinding in the entire game, which I suppose isn't *too* bad.

The tentacles each have a couple of weaknesses so suss out what they are and spam them with baton pass attacks, when they’re all out you can attack maruki. Phase 2 is straightforward enough, then phase 3 is fully scripted
You upgraded the baton pass for your charscters right?

Um... not so much, no.
EDIT: I mean, a played a round apiece with Ann and Ryuji when the game pretty much made me do so, but that's about it.

I just remember constantly taking out tentacles (whilst hitting/blocking their strengths/weaknesses) and getting hits in on the boss when possible. It's another shit repetitive battle of attrition.

It absolutely is.
Adding insult to injury is the presence of a hidden restriction - not a literal countdown timer, a la Okumura, but if you take too many turns on this boss, he'll hit you with an attack that does more damage than your maximum HP. Instant death each time. (This is based upon what I've read at Reddit, but it tallies with my experiences so far.)
Seeing as I've botched the chance to max out my Baton Passes, I think it might be time to up the difficulty again!

Well, I got it done (and without having to increase the difficulty, to boot) - it took bloody forever, but I got it done.
As it turns out, the insta-kill move I mentioned above can be blocked if you buff the crap out of your party the turn before it comes.
The boss will do said attack more often the longer the fight drags on, which makes the entire encounter even more attritional than it already is, but at least you don't waste the best part of an hour by dying to it unavoidably as I'd initially feared.

Finally got over the line in P3P, had to force myself as it really drags later. It feels like they didn't really bother to replace the cut cut-scenes from the PS2 version with anything to explain the story as it feels very under-developed.
It's interesting as a bit of Persona history and you can really see the proto-ideas that develop themselves more fully in later games but it's definitely my least favourite of the Persona games I've played by a long way. At the same time it kind of spoiled the later games for me a bit. I remember the dungeons in P4 being very similar, in fact I suspect they just straight up reused a lot of the enemies and graphics from P3. I don't think I want to go into my P4G play through straight after this. Some of the characters in P5 are quite derivative to party members here too, it makes it seem more formulaic.

From what I've read it doesn't sound that challenging as a tactics game.
Which is fine, I guess it's intended for people who are new to the genre. But I don't think I'll be getting it if that's the case.

ATLUS put on a 40 minute "mini live" concert featuring members of the Persona band performing songs from the Tactica soundtrack, and it's really good. My copy of the game comes tomorrow, cannot wait

"quest 1" was a pain until I remove mona and put Joker back into the party as its only 2 turns to wipe all bad guys

I'm looking forward to playing Persona 3 Reload, which will be my first game in the series that's not based around Joker and the gang.
I do have slight reservations about the turn-based combat, but hopefully that'll be less of a slog than it was in Royal 'cause I have some idea what I'm doing now.
