Quiz Mondays are restarting on BBC tonight. New series of Mastermind (Shania Twain as a specialist subject) and my favourite, Only Connect.

They’ve basically abandoned things like the Fry-Leela arc or individual character’s stories in favour of each episode being a stand alone topical parody Isn't that the route The Simpsons took?

H from Steps is on Celebrity Masterchef this week and my wife was asking if he’s got the same name as the guy from Lost Prophets. I thought she’d remember the song about it but she didn’t and now I’ve fall down a youtube rabbithole of watching clips of Kunt & The Gang.
He really does have a knack for a writing a catchy tune.
Anyway, turns out H is a lovely bloke who broadly fine at cooking and Charlotte Crosby seems like a nightmare to be in the same room as.

If you haven't watched Freddie Flintoff's Field Of Dreams first series do it now.
Probably the best 'reality tv' I've ever seen though it's sort of a documentary too. It's really really good and you don't need to like cricket whatsoever.
Back for a second series as of last night.

After reading about the new series I'm considering jumping straight to season 2. It sounds like it has a very different vibe to season 1.

You'd really be missing out if you skipped the first series.

I’m sure having half your face ripped off your skull will be enough to give everything a different vibe. Poor guy. There must have been some serious negligence on Top Gear for them to shelve the whole series indefinitely.

The human side is what made the first series so good. Felt like a reasonably authentic representation of what happened when some troubled kids got a chance to be part of something they'd never previously considered. A genuine experiment with risk of failure.
None of them even knew or cared who Freddie was, most didn't really care about cricket at any point. It wasn't a fairytale yet watching some of them gain self esteem was so uplifting. Adnan's story is essential viewing.
Second season certainly seems a bit different due to the accident and the fact that they already have a team. Freddie was reclusive before travelling with them to India and is struggling.
It's a neat, yet clearly unintended consequence that the situation is somewhat inverted and this time Freddie needs the distraction of a project and the support of a team.
The fact that this has aired in the same week that Graham Thorpe's family bravely spoke out about mental health only makes the message more poignant.

Starting watching Adam & Joe’s old BBC3 show Go Tokyo on youtube last night. Its from 2003 and while Adam & Joe are as good company as ever it is very dated in its “lol look at those crazy Japanese” attitude and its irreverent takes on crazy Japanese trends like cosplay and manga.
I’m sure I was probably the same at the time but twenty years of internet and cultural saturation make odd now seeing them being amazed and amused by completely everyday things.

I remember the tone being a bit off even back then tbh, and I loved Adam and Joe.

It certainly leans hard into many stereotypes of Japanese people and culture that would get you skirting very close to a cancelling these days.

There’s definitely been a change from our generation to the newer ones where we looked up to America as the pinnacle of the modern world and saw places like Japan as oddball anomalies, and now America is seen as the old world to younger people and they look up to places like Japan and South Korea.
Not surprised Adam and Joe do Tokyo hasn’t aged well. They’d both probably admit they had some wilderness years in between the Adam and Joe Show and their eventual revival via XFM / Radio 6.

Western people's views of Japan are still weird imho. But then Japanese people's views of the west are pretty weird too.

The first vending machine full of schoolgirls’ knickers joke was probably with the first five minutes. Which I know was a huge trope about Japan back then but it is a bit disappointing to hear Adam & Joe on that level.
Although like rawshark says, there’s a very strong chance they’d be embarrassed about it themselves these days. I know I’ve seen interviews where they talk about some stuff they did to try and keep up with the laddish side of culture in the late-90s and how it wasn’t their vibe and they hope their kids don’t see those bits now.

They had a short lived Eurotrash / Tarrant on TV-esque show which must have run about 2001. It was VO only but focused on clips where people got naked - the shows tagline was “The Show with Tits in it!” Fairly sure Adam has mentioned that as a low point career-wise.

Progressed to S3 of my GoT rewatch, still absolutely steller TV.
The fall off will be jarring, or maybe its good now (as if).

Come Dine with me, obviously filmed in Covid times. All 5 of them stood 2m apart in the garden and spaced out around a dining table. Just looks weird now

There's still a slew of panel shows which were clearly filmed years ago in the pandemic times and they've only just decided to air them, so it's really weird to see it now.

Replacing the panel desks with individual Prof X hoverchair looking ones for Covid on Would I Lie To You really stands out

On the flip side I remember watching the first series of Taskmaster as a repeat during the pandemic and being horrified by how close they were all sat together.
They really are shoulder to shoulder in that one.

Freddie Flintoff Field of Dreams on iPlayer
Follow up to the show about his youth team from Preston. Partially filmed before his Top Gear accident and then some footage of recovery and then afterwards as they go to India.
Admittedly I only watched it for Flintoff and I think it's the first thing he's done officially since. Poor bugger.

I don't normally post in this thread midway through a series, but I started The Last Of Us this week and I've just finished Long, Long Time, and that episode is going to stick with me for an awful long time.

House of the Dragon S1E3
Decent stuff so far. Crab man's small rebel force suddenly turning into a three year war between episodes was a bit wtf. The main character is starting to grow on me, but she needs to hurry the fuck up and get out of the petulant teen phase. It also has to have some of the least memorable names in TV history... I don't think I know a single characters name so far apart from Daemon.
It's got a pretty decent cast. Considine, Cooke and Ifans are great, and Smith is scene stealing (although barely in the first few episodes) Quite funny seeing Grace off Blue Lights in the first episode and struggling to place her, despite the giveaway accent being exactly the same.

I was woken up at 6am today by my 19-month-old… apparently because he couldn’t live without Miss Rachel one moment longer.
I won’t lie - I’m trying to grow a kink for her just so it gives me anything to invest in.
Nothing yet but will keep trying. I blame her weird beta husband.

New series of (Celebrity) Race Across the World
I like these series. They're fun and you do get to see a lot of interesting places that generally wouldn't be shown on travel shows etc. And Kelly Brook is in this one.
