Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda Not great so far, but I'm willing to give it a chance and watch further for a while at least. It's not actually made by Roddenberry, having started 10 years after his death, but taking the popular understanding of some philosopher's ideas and making an entire space civilisation out of that, that's so TOS it's funny. Also interesting: some said that Discovery is influenced by this, but I doubted that, I doubted they'd even heard of this show. Now I'm not so sure anymore. The good guys' most important (and sentient!) ship gets thrown a few hundred years in the future where their federation/commonwealth doesn't exist anymore, so they go on a journey to rebuild it on the basis of idealism and understanding and stuff. Seems oddly familiar. I don't remember it being that great, though maybe as filler saturday afternoon tv... If you want sentient ships, Farscape is the way to go.

Steve Van Zandt: Disciple (Sky/ Now TV)
A one off documentary (2h 20m) on a man I knew precious little about. Guitarist, songwriter, performer, producer, actor, activist - you name it; he’s done it. It’s very well made, there’s some fantastic tributes and it zips along. Well worth a watch and highly recommended

I’ve tried Andromeda a few times but the production values are just impossible for me to get over.
And speaking of dodgy sci-fi, after releasing all ten of the ten worst episodes of Futurama back-to-back as season 11 for Hulu/Disney+, season 12 has just launched with a “topical” NFT themed episode.

I am watching Yellowjackets.
It's pretty good! Though I'm wondering if the mystery stuff is actually going to pay off. It's intriguing right now, but there's a little too much of "when are they getting to the fireworks factory?!" at the moment.

I’ve started watching Shogun. I’m preferring it to House of the Dragon, all told.

Like hey kids its Chritina Ricci and some grunge music, remember the 90s? In a fun way. But what show has ever actually pulled off the pay off really. They all get a few too many series and weirdly string it along. Watching: Batman The Caped Crusader. Just good Batman, it's like an extension of the Animated Series which is the best superhero thing ever in my books. Gothic, noir, Batman. Also its being written by Bruce Timm, Ed Brubacker and Greg Rucka as far as I can tell and getting the Gotham Central people to write Batman is just perfect.

I really wanted to watch Yellowjackets, but by the time I was about to start, everyone was saying that the ending / season 2 was rubbish.

There's a third season next year, apparently. Season 2 was total filler, and it was blatantly obvious that the story outline was intended to be 2 seasons, so hopefully season 3 will be what season 2 should have been, but I won't be in a rush to watch it.

Broadly agree with that. Season 1 was good enough to be watched in its own right, though.
Still enjoying Shogun - although it’s weird now I’ve realised Cosmo Jarvis is doing a Boris Johnson voice.

It's more the weird inflection that's alike than Cosmo sounding like an Aussie.

So. Yellowjackets (almost at the end of S1) I was hoping that the answer to why they were in tribal getup sacrificing people would be different than "they had magic mushrooms and were tripping balls". Because that answer is dumb as fuck.

Anyway, I'm now continuing my rewatch of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
It is also dumb as fuck, but in a way that is endlessly inventive and charming. I think it might be my favourite manga/anime, it's just such an absolute joy to watch.

I’m starting to think Futurama is being scripted by AI now.
This week’s was better than most of the Hulu era episodes but its very formulaic

I'm not going to waste my time even giving this new season a chance. The last one was the absolute nadir of the show. So bad the voice actors should have refused to do it until the scripts got redone.

Last season was truly the worst.
The NFT episode last week was slightly less on the nose than the dated topical stuff last season and this one is more Squid Game influenced than a Squid Game parody. Although compared to what the show used to be it does feel like the well ran dry long ago.

Watched a couple of the episodes from last season and it definitely felt like a series that had run its course. For me the end of the broadcast tv series (“what do you say? Want to go round again?”) was the perfect end to the series. But while these episodes aren’t really needed, I don’t trying they take away from that.
All the recommendations for Shogun have been spot on. Think I’ve got about three episodes left and loving how shit goes down every episode.

They’ve basically abandoned things like the Fry-Leela arc or individual character’s stories in favour of each episode being a stand alone topical parody but all the references are 12-18 months out of date and all the jokes are equally worn out.
The current season has done a slightly better job of marrying the satire with the Futurama universe than last season but they still open with an NFT episode.

NFTs feel longer ago than that since they were remotely topical. Just checked and it's been 2 years since the crash.
Finger well and truly on the pulse!

Can't believe Cobra Kai has made it to 6 seasons. I really should go back and finish Season 1.

It's my biggest guilty pleasure. On paper it's shit, but just switch your brain off and enjoy.
Currently watching umbrella academy S4. Seems a bit unnecessary so far (3 episodes in), almost to the point that I'll be glad when it's all over.

I walked away from umbrella academy in season one after they featured an entire uninterrupted 3 minutes of toploader's dancing in the moonlight, which is in contravention of the geneva conventions
by all accounts s2 and 3 (but not 4 it seems) were maybe worth it?

I only watched the first two, which I enjoyed overall. It did have a habit of just stopping what it was doing and breaking into an overlong musical dance segment though. It’s like no one told them it was on Netflix and they didn’t need to pad out episodes to a set running time.
