The Lost Symbol Not sure how many episodes there are, but I reckon I must be getting somewhere near the end. Usually with these things there is some semblance of logic, but this is utterly ridiculous. It's almost like they're just making shit up as they go along and hoping nobody notices. Smart price Jake Gyllenhaal isn't a terrible replacement for Hanks, capturing just the right amount of woodenness and contempt for the material. Needless to say I'm rather enjoying it. Nice summary. I'm also enjoying it despite it being the most consistently stupid show I've seen in a long time. Almost nothing anyone does survives even the most superficial of scrutiny so you have to meet it half way and pretend you've had a frontal lobotomy to get the most out of it. But do that, and it's fun nonsense. I have no idea how the actors avoid mugging to the camera. I can't work out if Eddie Izzard is really trying his best or just seeing what he can away with. Totally absurd.

Hawkeye episode 1 was a bit underwhelming, but largely because I was expecting a buddy-cop comedy and the first episode is almost all setup. Some decent fight scenes and jackie-chan moves, though largely shot in the dark. Don't get the bit with the dog at all. Not clear on who the bad guys are supposed to be at this point. Will continue.

Giving Dopesick a go. It's ok. Fairly standard true story drama that is elevated by its cast. Keaton deserves all the praise but Will Poulter continues to be one of our best acting exports in the past decade and the girl from Book Smart (not the really annoying one) is smashing it.
I sort of know about the opioid crisis in the US so none of this is particularly shocking or surprising to me.
Yet again, it's a high profile criticism of the US healthcare system that will achieve nothing other than reminding the rest of the world why the US is just shit

I enjoyed both episodes of Hawkeye (haven't seen 3 yet, will when I wake up), but I'm aware that it's more trying to be the Matt Fraction run than anything else. But a big issue with the leadup is that many people not familiar with the comics are trying to compare it to Lethal Weapon or Die Hard, and it's neither of those, so it's setting expectations which have no actual ground.

Not sure if you've seen stories like www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/hawkeye-director-reveals-die-hard-home-alone-inspired-marvel-series.html/ but the Director was certainly thinking of Die Hard when they made the series (and Home Alone).

Even as an American who uses a lot of likes and commas, that's a lot of likes and commas in his response. But okay, fair enough.

Brian Thompson has just arrived in my X-Files rewatch
Alway enjoy his big sub-Terminator presence in any series but this is the one.

Subbed to a free trial of Amazon Prime, for xmas deliveries, for kids to watch over xmas, and mainly to check out Wheel of Time as it seems to be rated pretty well on these here forums.
Had about 45 minutes before bed, just about enough time to check out the first episode.
So... I watched the first 45 minutes of View to a Kill.
My brain works in mysterious ways when it comes to streaming entertainment.
Anyway... it's awesome. Possibly also terrible, but mainly awesome.
Opening ski chase is cool, as bond ski chases usually are. Minimal use of back-projection. Music is really good and really builds the tensio... oh wait, now it's Beach Boys singing California Girls?! Oh, now it's supposed to be tense again. Oh, now it's sexy time!
I know there was some talk recently about the sound effect on the car barrel-roll jump being the worst sound choice ever, but Beach Boys here has to rival it... and possibly beat it as it's much longer and really takes the excitement out of some cool snowboarding stunts.
Cool theme tune and opening credits with neon painted naked ladies. I dunno why, but bond credit sequences get a pass from me, despite me usually being over-sensitive about dodgy unnecessary sexism in media. Not sure what my kids would make of it.
I know I watched this on TV when I was in primary school, because I remember being very proud of my drawing of bond on the golden gate bridge. But I don't remember really noticing the sexy stuff... maybe kids that age just don't even notice.
It's a shame Moore is looking a bit too old by this point, as is Moneypenny.
I love that movies of that era didn't even bother trying to make realistic French people. The french cop is called Mr Aubergine, and both he and the taxi driver have terrible 'french' accents. ( See also Superman 2. Both of which have an Eiffel Tower scene).
But I still love all the proper stunts that they stuck in these movies. Have a car chase? Let's jump a car through the top deck of a bus.
Jeez.. it's weird seeing a young Christopher Walken.
At this point I needed to go to bed.

Quite possibly the best bond theme of all time.

There's a new season of The House of Paper (aka Money Heist because Netflix are Americans and have to ruin everything for no reason). I kind of felt season 4 wasn't as good as the other three, but the first episode of this season is strong. It looks like the whole plan is fucked and there is no plan B. But there are 7 episodes so I'm pretty sure the army aren't going to finish them off next episode. Classic. Still gutted that Nairobi isn't in it any more though.

I felt like a bit of the old ultraviolence, so I started watching Banshee again.
I forgot how many boobs there were in the first season or two. Three pairs, just in the first episode!

I know he gets over it eventually, but it takes a while.

Arcane (Netflix)
Yeah so this is astonishingly good stuff. With the one caveat that I have to accept a League of Legends videogame adaptation is probably my tv show of the year.

Such a great show, and yeah they definitely had a boob quota that they made sure they met for the first couple of seasons.

It truly is way better than it has any right to be. Considering the game's popularity, the talent involved in making it could easily have just done another hack job and nobody would've faulted them for it. But now this raises the bar for other adaptations IMO and we are all the better for it.

I know there’s been a conversation about whether its right to judge old tv shows by modern standards in the Star Trek thread but Jack Black and Phoebe from Friends’ brother are a right little pair of incels in the X-Files episode D.P.O.

Hot Amish girl had the best Banshee Boobies™.
It's such a great show though, shame budget cuts let the final season down a touch. The Season with the crazy Indian guy was immense.

Our current rotation:
Masterchef the Professionals: really enjoying this and I think it helps that they've massively toned down the ritual humiliation that seemed to be the raison d'etre of these types of shows. Some genuinely impressive skills on show and a likeable bunch of judges (and Greg Wallace).
Hawkeye: This is everything that Falcon and the Winter Soldier wasn't - it's just great fun.
Succession: It hasn't quite lived up to the perfection of season 2, but it's still sublime TV with some of the sharpest writing and acting around. Will they stick the landing next week?
Peep Show: I'm mid way through a re-watch and I'm finding it brilliant, yet also hugely problematic. I'd completely forgotten that Mark gets raped in one episode and the whole affair is brushed under the carpet and played for laughs. Surprised this is episode hasn't been withdrawn from on-demand.
Portrait Artist of the Year: The judges finally seem to be picking the "right" winners or at least being called out by the presenters for making ludicrous choices. I remain in awe of some of the talent on display, yet also baffled by some of the entries. That's art I guess...
The Yellow Jackets: Just started this and it seems pretty decent so far. A bit like an all-female version of the movie Alive, with regular flashbacks and flashforwards to those that survived the plane crash. Decent cast too.

I think the blonde lad who always looks like he’s just got a telling off from the head teacher could pull it off.

I really like the guy who is a private chef for some Saudi billionaire - he's turned out some amazing plates of food and really wowed the critics. I also like the Portuguese lad who looked as though he'd consumed huge quantities of Columbian marching powder ahead of the critics round. He was amazing to watch in the skills test.

Been binging The Bridge , on Season 3 and still enjoying it. A bit formulaic but Saga is a great character.

I really hate the way Monica says butter though.
Booter.
And she says it a lot.
