If they start taking parts out that you don’t need, have they considered removing the necksticle?

If they start taking parts out that you don’t need, have they considered removing the necksticle? Probably cost based. 20 minutes in a dentist chair vs surgery and a hospital stay.

Got some glasses after my eye test and holy fuck, how bad were my eyes!!
I only need them for close up reading of small text and anything over 6 meters is blurry but where I was seeing grey scale text on a white letter, I can actually see bold black clear text.
Game changer

Tooth out, all straightforward. No different to the other couple of teeth I've had out.

It would seem my joking around with Rob last page is coming back to bite me...
(I need to stop)
Those of you in the Euro thread might have caught me saying something along the lines of taking Spain's victory as compensation for a tooth I broke...
Turns out I need a dang root canal for it. It didn't hurt when it happened and it still doesn't now, but apparently that's because one of its roots is completely shot (I barely registered the dentist digging around in there until he closed in on the other, better root), so no possibility of a simpler solution.
The timing is pretty great too, if we can't finish the procedure in two appointments this week we leave for vacation next week and he leaves a day or two after we get back, so I'll have to live with a temp solution until mid-August... Let's just hope that's all it takes!

Why not just have it removed?

Root canal and crown prep for me today too. Joy.

Why not just have it removed? Because both the dentist and I would much much rather I don't lose the tooth outright if I don't have to, I would assume... If nothing else, the amount of potential additional procedures (bridge and/or fake tooth) that would bring would be enough to make me veto that unless there was no other way! At least the canal should only require a filling/crown after, assuming all goes well

Root canal and crown prep for me today too. Joy. Has mine last week! £720 over two sessions. I miss the NHS.

Yikes. Thankfully mine is NHS, so £300 inc crown. Wasn't too bad but hurts like hell now.

£720? I'd rather have no teeth.

Sadly the outcome for a lot of people. Same place I go, a root canal done privately is over £900.

I'm getting an implant today, you don't want to know what it's costing! I don't want to know but I can't unsee it! I've got too many gaps, and have to hope it will last longer than I do (I'm hoping for 25 years), so it's a "lifetime investment".
The guy suggested I might get the one next door done too...going to ask if he has any BOGOFF offers on....
Why don't the NHS do stuff like this, and charge for it? Instead of paying for the dentist's Porsche and the impressive huge fish tank they have, they could make money off it but not an excessive amount?
(I have a full NHS dentist, but they took this issue as far as they could and referred me...)

Update (with a preventative knock on wood): first procedure went well! Minor problem in that my gag reflex kicked in when the dentist tried to get a topical x-ray (luckily I didn't barf on the poor guy ), but the first and only attempt we managed was good enough for him to do the job... And I ended up not even needing any anaesthetic, since I surprisingly felt something painful only once, then I guess whatever it was checked out! ("Ooh, you're hard" etc) I'm probably not dodging the extra procedure after vacation, mind, best to get the job done properly, but (again, knock on wood) it could have gone much worse, so... Not looking the gift horse in the mouth! Hopefully everyone else having tooth troubles (and any other troubles really) has an easy time of it as well!

Just had to phone the doctors to arrange a cholesterol test after getting a letter through the door.
Hurrah for the next milestone. 😢
Hopefully not statins o'clock, but we'll see.

Why wouldn't you take a statin (if you aren't wearing a tinfoil hat?). The overall benefits make it seem like a no brainer if offered. I'm T1 diabetic, they help with all sorts of potential issues. I have highish cholesterol, and have been on a statin for years, but I think it's genetic rather than diet. I recently requested they change it to another one to improve some of my figures flagged as being high. The consultant reckoned it was fine, then noticed he was looking at the recommended range from 20 years ago...

I recently requested they change it to another one to improve some of my figures flagged as being high. The consultant reckoned it was fine, then noticed he was looking at the recommended range from 20 years ago... To offer a counterpoint to this - my soon to be father-in-law's memory and cognitive ability started to suffer after he'd been on statins for a while (for his cholesterol). Only after numerous tests ruling other things out did they try taking him off statins and slowly his memory and cognitive ability improved back to where he used to be. Agree they're highly likely to be a benefit (both my parents are on them) but they can come with certain downsides and side effects for certain people.

Yeah, there are quite a few side effects with statins, so a case of weighing up the risk etc. My last blood test was .07 above the reference point so have tried to make some dietary changes to avoid another pill. Will see what it is in another blood test and go from there.

Yeah, my old man reckons that statins made him feel like a zombie, but as with all these things there's lots of anecdotal evidence but no studies to back them up.
