Feel free to discuss health journeys/procedures and man flu tales here
Just had my first ever MRI
Having some spinal issues and Dr wants to look for early degredation.
Nothing I've ever experienced before has had this level of perfect balance of omg cool and making me scared shitless!
I was in there for about 45 mins fluttering between OMG This thing is going to blow up with me inside it and this is most sci-fi cool thing I've ever experienced. The sounds the thing makes are almost alien.
10/10 would not do again

I once had MRI done to my head (After a cycling accident falling directly on my head - no helmet - was lucky to survive), and wouldn't want to repeat it either. It made me sick (I mean the MRI), almost threw up there. Did they also give you some special liquid to drink before the procedure? BTW what's a man flu?

Yeah, I actually started to feel a bit naseous too, but that might have been from the fear. I broke my elbow last year and have some pins in it, I told them but was worried that the pins were about shoot out of my arm lol
They asked if I was allergic to tracer fluid, I said no but they didn't give me any anyway, weird now that you mention it.

Not had an MRI, but have had a camera down the urethra - which wasn't exactly painful, but certainly a discomforting experience.
I learned afterwards that having a hard on doesn't help...

Had a camera up the poophole which most definitely wasn't something I'm in a rush to repeat. Consensus at the end was that everything is fine and I just need more fibre in my diet.
My mind instantly flashed back to my doctor never even bothering to ask about my diet before referring me... Bastard!

I had really bad reflux for a while, which meant gastroscopy (pretty horrible), endless smaller cameras down the nose which fucked up my right nostril so much it can't be used for that again, and manometry (absolutely ghastly experience with a completely unsympathetic nurse who must have learned her bedside manner from Dr Mengele). I also had to wear a pH meter for 24 hours at a time on a couple of occasions which was fucking horrible (tube down nose into stomach and you have to wear it for a day) and the device was like something from the Soviet days.

Had to have my heart kicked back in to rhythm a few times with the old paddles. That's quite fun. And had a cardiac MRI which was largely fine, but felt like I had Geoff Capes sat on my chest. Have thankfully avoided cameras in orifices so far.

I had an MRI a few weeks back, apparently being grumpy and forgetting stuff are symptoms of something so they thought they'd have a look at my head. I was mostly bored by the whole experience and irritated that my work wasn't getting done while I was wasting time lying there.

dfunkedOh, yes colonoscopy, had that one too. Depends though if it is the "deep" one (right to the beginning of the colon - the tube goes like 1.5 meters deep) or just the short one (about half a meter deep). My first was the deep one and a very strange experience. Lying on my back naked, moaning and howling with two young females (doctor and nurse) leaning above me. What a disgrace.

I had an MRI on my knee a while back.
"keep still for 30 minutes," they said.
I struggle to keep still for 30 seconds at the best of times. Obviously, my head wasn't in the machine, so I just lay back and thought pleasant thoughts.
Ruptured ACL as it goes. Although, it is slowly improving. Which is good because the surgical waiting list is aeons long and I'm sure there are many folks more needy than I.

I got diagnosed with a hernia in my right groin about 5 years ago but it wasn’t so bad so doc recommended not operating, the pain stopped for years but just started again this morning. I’m going to have to go under the knife, aren’t I? Wonder why it just got worse.. I had a hernia op about 8 years ago in the right groin area. Mine got so bad that if I laid down and put my hands either side of the hernia and coughed it would bounce up and down! I ended up going private because of the long wait and "they say" keyhole is better. Not wanting to put you off but I've had problems ever since with pain and eventually it stopped me playing badminton and footy. I've had various trips back to the docs and scans which never revealed anything. I was dismissed as being a wuss. It got quite bad earlier in the year (from pain around the hernia area to shooting pains into my sacks as well). Luckily I found a doctor that actually wanted to help and he sent me for an MRI. It turns out I was right all along as I have a load of fat/lumps where the mesh was inserted which is rubbing against my nerve ends and he doesn't think my body reacted well to the mesh being a foreign object. One of the nerves feeds directly into my man globes which is causing the ball ache. He thinks this was all caused by internal bleeding post op, so now I have a choice of living with it (he suggests I do this) or have another op which he can't guarantee anything and could cause more issues because of the existing mesh (which can't be removed) and mess I'm in. I've got a few weeks to decide what to do. I guess I'm really unlucky because the latest doc said key hole usually doesn't causes any issues like this. I hope yours goes better than mine if you go ahead with it and if you do be persistent if something doesn't feel right.

I had double inguinal hernias 10 years ago. Keyhole and mesh and not a single issue since.
Weird how everyone reacts differently to any operation.

Yeah, I think it's a case of bad luck for me as the last doc was really surprised because keyhole apparently virtually guarantees no issues.

Colonoscopy here too, a couple of months ago. Was supposed to have sedation, but not sure it worked as I was lucid throughout, and certainly remember it all after. I watched it all on the TV, and was really chuffed when I asked if the hole at the end was the start of my small intestine, to which the Dr confirmed it was. Tbh it was mostly relief that he couldn't go any further.
He took some biopsies on a few dark patches on his way out, it's really weird seeing the little grabber claw bite a chuck out of the wall of your gut (they all came back clear)
The prep really wasn't as bad as I was expecting from what people told me, I was convinced it hadn't worked because I never had any violent bowel expulsions, but the Dr said it was pretty good.
All in all it wasn't too bad, worst bit was all the wind after!

A colonoscopy verteran here and hope to recieve some kind of little badge or at least a sticker on my fast approaching 10th. I've found that weirdly they get worse or hurt a bit more each time. Always refused any sedation since the first few were not too much bother ( or as little bother about getting a camera tube shoved up your brown eye can be ).
The last few though have had me grabbing for the gas and whilst it does help, it quickly turns you into a gibbering loon for short spells. Plus as Zulohero mentioned, you get to watch it all which I find fascinating in a painful way. The little grabber claw is a weird bit, I've had some polyps removed for biopsy and inwardly flinch each time since it seems so large on the screen, some metal jaw chomping onto bits of your gut.
Also, I'm always intrigued by the way it's controlled, it looks like some kind of analogue controller. I wonder if gastroenterologists had to endure some kind of gut game training.

I couldn't see a general health thread and I wanted to bitch and moan about chronic illness that wasn't Covid related.
Has anyone else suffered from (or is still suffering from) sinusitis? I've been plagued by it for many years, with my assumption being that living in and around one of the most air-polluted areas of the south east for my entire life has probably contributed to the deterioration of my sinuses.
I was advised to have surgery 3 years ago but the doctors insistence on using the word "might" in the sentence "it might help" was not a big enough draw for me to have my nasal cavities drilled. Anecdotal stories online suggested that that kind of surgery often helped short term but many people reported repeat symptoms even after surgery.
So I sacked that idea off and moved to the coast instead.
It seemed to work for a bit. The difference in air quality has definitely had a positive effect, but this last month has been a nightmare. I've been wondering if it's due in part to me rejoining the world a bit at a time after hiding away with the rest of the sensible people for the last 18 months.
Chronic sinusitis doesn't just mean that I'm a snotty mess half the time. It's the stuff that it does behind the scenes that hurts; one of the worst of which had it affecting my jaws and making all of my teeth ache for a week several years ago. But it's the constant fatigue that's so debilitating long term. Constant tiredness as your body tries to fight a pretty mundane and low level infection for months on end.
I'm tired of it. I'm tired.

That sounds utterly shit Binky :/ Is there no other treatment? Something less invasive that maybe isn't permanent but helps? I don't really know what else to say

I have a lot of sinus problems as well. They don't sound as bad as yours but can still be a pain in the arse. Are you doing sinus rinses? I find they help a lot.
Have you also ruled out things like silent reflux?

I've had appointments with consultants and head scans to diagnose it when it was super bad a few years back. I'm lucky it's not as bad as that these days, but it's the tiredness that's doing me in at the moment. Death by a thousand cuts, you know?

Having had sinusitis on various occasions you have my utmost sympathy. I have never been so close to taking a black & decker drill to my forehead to 'let the demons out'.
The teeth and/or optic nerve aching can do one too. I only ever got that after getting a doozy of a cold when our boy started nursery. That repeated for a year or so, but seems to have eased off for the last decade.
If it's any consolation, a person at our work got surgery to have a polyp removed from their sinus that was causing their issues and it didn't help a jot, so maybe swerving the surgery wasn't the worst plan.

My mother in law has been suffering from this - she eventually saw ENT and they saw some kind of scab/mucus plug up there, which they reckon will rinse out eventually. (Obviously not the case with you)

I’ve been meaning to have a whinge about this myself funnily enough, I think there is a health thread somewhere if the mods want to get their merge on. I’ve had a rough 3 months or so with some sort of sinus issue, I had a cold back in July that took a while to shift then totally wiped me out. The physical symptoms haven’t been anything too bad weirdly, a bit of pressure around the sinus areas but the main thing that did me was the constant exhaustion, massive brain fog and being filled with anxiety. Panic attacks that rumbled on for days, trouble sleeping worrying if my hearts beating weirdly and waking up in the middle of the night shaking. I usually don’t worry about a fucking thing so constant dread about health has been a shock, I’ve self diagnosed myself with pretty much everything I can Google at various points. At least it seems to be lifting now, the overall good days are outweighing the bad

...the constant exhaustion, massive brain fog and being filled with anxiety. Panic attacks that rumbled on for days, trouble sleeping worrying if my hearts beating weirdly and waking up in the middle of the night shaking... Ah yes, welcome. I hope for your sake it's a one off and you're not stuck with a reoccurring face ache every time you catch a cold or virus. - oops, sorry mods! Didn't realise there was already a health thread. Told you I was tired. In response to the "other options" my GP recommended that I take ibuprofen regularly to act as an anti-inflammatory. So when it's really bad that's what I do – scoff on cheap ibuprofen for a few days then take a break and repeat.
