Even the albums considered duds usually have a couple of gems on them.
I kind of envy you having all this music to listen to for the first time. I'd live to do a Men in Black style memory wipe to listen to everything like it's the first time again.

You listen to A Tribe Called Quest much Ali? Very influential for the later Afrocentric groups that followed, from Wu-Tang to OutKast to Black Star.

I'd live to do a Men in Black style memory wipe to listen to everything like it's the first time again. Yeah, definitely feel like a kid in a sweet shop. No shortage of things to listen to. I've been putting quite a bit of time in but still constantly having to choose whether to listen to something new, dig into a discog or just relisten to stuff I've already heard. Thanks to music streaming, mobile phones and wireless earbuds it's really easy to do all this with virtually no barriers and relatively cheaply. I am thinking about a new pair of headphones though
@spookyxelectric
A Tribe Called Quest came up pretty early and frequently so I've listened to a few of their albums. I love all that older stuff. I feel much more comfortable whenever I listen to something new from the 90s- if something is recommended for some reason, it's probably good. Newer stuff tends to get listened to with more trepidation.
There's a lot of red flags with modern hip-hop that are quite common. I like a simple beat with good rapping ('simple' isn't really what I mean but I use it as opposed to the R&B style that's quite popular now). The more modern elements don't have to be bad and there's stuff I like, but it's far more common.
I haven't been able to get on with Tyler so far. Not really seeing it- Spotify likes to tell me he's the 207th most popular artist in the world so I feel like I'm one of the cool kids listening to him but modern hip-hop tastes are probably not what I'm looking for

Is that Westside Gunn doing his stupid noises in Rome Streetz albums? I do hate him I think patrikb2014 on reddit put it best with, "Westside Gunn dress like a hoe bag and sound like a retarded 15 year old"
@rummonkey what's your take on WG? I know you're a Griselda fan. Do you like his adlibs or just ignore them?
Going back to female rappers, I've been enjoying Rapsody

Can't even stand his voice let alone the adlibs. A strong voice goes a long way in hip hop and equally an annoying one can completely ruin songs.
I normally skip his verse and go straight to Benny and Conway. Or when he comes up skip the track.
Been listening to Harlem World and Mase was great on the album. Always overlooked him but it came up on Spotify as something I might like.

[/div][/quote] For 90s/2000s vibes the Pharcyde, Deltron 3030, Ozomatli and (obviously) Jurassic 5 are all worth your time. If you're ok with just good cuts then Kid Koala, Peter Parker and Fingathing will scratch that itch

Slighty offended by div quote
I've listened to the first two. They're OK. Deltron 3030 is cool but not something I'd really listen to very often. I can't not read that as Fingering and it puts me off a little bit
I tried listening to Griselda again and just couldn't get through it. When he does actually rap it's fucking mental. Adlibs on adlibs. Has he got Tourettes or something. You know those kids toys that make farm animals sounds when they hit the buttons? I imagine him as a toddler they put in the corner while they're recording with one of those but with gun sounds

When I say I'm a Griselda fan, it's more the individual projects from Benny and Conway.
The plugs I met is a good place to start to see if you're a fan. Just skip any tacks feat WG.
TT3 is definitely worth a listen as well.

He really is seemingly everywhere at the moment. Listened to Van Ghost and thought that was good. So what else have they done? Oh it's WG
The Plugs I Met is good, apart from dickhead. Started listening to Conway's latest and nope, WG is all over it
What really bothers me is that I really like everything he's on but he also ruins everything he's on
Need to give everything Griselda/WG a wide berth at least for the time being because I think it's conditioning a response in me

Ice Motherfuckin' T!
I do like it more than Original Gangster. The 'I'm so good at sex' track is a particularly cringey one though. I mean, they all are, but I don't believe they had sex for two days straight without eating. You'd get hungry, plus you'd need energy for all that non-stop incredible sex you're having

Ha. Yeah 90's gangsta rappers were as far as away from being 'woke' as you could get. Some of them obviously lived the life, but I always took the lyrics with a pinch of salt. I love 99 problems (Jay Z's version was so shite in comparison), but if I sang any of the lyrics to my wife I'd be up shit creek

Came across this on Bandcamp and I quite like it. I don't know if it's good hip-hop as such, but the fusion of rap and 80's goth bass and synth is kind of cool, I think?

I know dogbot and RumMonkey definitely heard both of Wale's Seinfeld Mixtapes, but if Ali and Danno haven't, y'all better
And also all the MMG Self Made tapes while we're at it

I still need to listen to the 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks mixtapes Rum recommended. Need to find what the app is called if the search feature is feeling kind
Was listening to Word...Life by O.C. and it's an amazing album. Was reading about DITC crew, which Big L and Pun were part of- Hip hop just keeps giving

I hate when people discredit hip hop when it's actually the most intellectual art form.
If you want to make an argument against lack of playing instruments, I want to point you toward The Roots who play everything live on albums and in concert, or Dr. Dre who gets a group of musicians to play everything on his records, even if it sounds like a sample of an old Parliament record. It's all live.
But lyrically, no other form of music has the wordplay, metaphors, storytelling or similes that hip hop does.
And that's not even taking into account the fusion of genres withing the samples and features.

@spookyxelectric yeah, that Wale and MMG stuff is so good. It's good to see someone ploughing the less well-known fields, too. I like that they tried to bring together artists who weren't just right in their lane, but made a lot of nods to wider hip hop, too.
@sabalisabali I'm a page and a couple of weeks late, but have you heard Methodman & Redman's stuff? Or... just Redman?

I suspect every fan of any genre of music would say the same.

I just point people over to RapGenius if they think hip hop/rappers aren't clever.
Clever word play gets me grinning like a little child, especially when I have to rewind the track and listen again to catch it. It's personally why Jay-Z is always in my argument for one of the best to ever do it because he chucks out double/triple-entendres just for fun

Yeah, Jay is really underrated by hip hop heads because he's so popular. But he's an ill MC and has always been great at adapting to what's happening, in a way that none of his peers or proteges have. And bro, just listen to Reasonable Doubt or American Gangster and tell me Jay ain't great

It took a while but 4:44 is one of my favourite albums of his. I didn't like it too much at first but it grew and grew on me and I'd say I easily listen to it once a month or so. Jay Electronica's A Written Testimony may as well be a Jay-Z album as he is featured on every single track. I've always loved Jay though. I got into trouble when Hard Knock Life was released as I was sent to the music shop to pick up some CDs for my aunty. She gave me £20 and the guy already knew I was coming. 9 year old me realised I had enough change over to buy the Hard Knock Life cassette - so I did. When I got back I told my Aunty that's all the change he gave me, she walked me up to the shop to ask why he short changed me and the truth came out

Good shout from Dogbot for Redman too, he's got some gems. I like the mmg stuff except for Meek mills shouty flow. A lot of the time it didn't fit with the beat he's rapping on. But Rick Ross has some of the best production out there, his ear for a beat is impeccable. Not bad for an ex prison CO That things he's Pablo Escobar.
