As for modern hip-hop, I liked Get Rich or Die Tryin'. I just like his voice and the tracks are catchy. There was a Jay Z album that was also quite good in parts. Whenever Eminem is on a track, it's usually pretty good but haven't listened to any of his own albums yet

I'm not a big Snoop fan outside of Doggystyle and The Chronic. The Biggie duets album was a cash grab for Puff Daddy, absolutely awful. Tragic he only got to put 2 proper albums out. I think you'll like Scarface though, touches on a lot of subjects and doesn't glorify the gangsta stuff you don't like so much. Start with The Diary, it's a classic. With a lot of older rappers it's best to start from the beggining rather than their newer stuff first. The Diary is a perfect album. Love it. Thank you! |

I personally like It Was Written more but Illmatic is the better album. I like It Was Written more too. Like every track on it except Street Dreams (probably just too familar with Sweet Dreams) and the last 2 tracks on the 2021 rerelease (which don't really count)
The Diary is outstanding, Paid in Full, Follow the Leader (Rakim/Eric B), It Takes a Nation... (Public Enemy), A Prince Among Thieves, all good!
I was going to say music streaming makes listening to new music so much easier but All Eyez on Me is unavailable :\

As you liked The Diary so much I'd recommend Makavelli 7 day theory out of 2pacs albums.
Similar sort of dark brooding vibe to it all.

Mobb Deep's The Infamous is really quite good. What's with the East/West coast thing? I know it was (is?) a thing but the Makaveli track is the first time it's really stood out to me. Admit Jay Z does seem a bit goofy though, ha. Is there more to it than just geography?

I don't know. To my mind it was consequence of the rise to prominence and popularity of West Coast hip hop and it turned into an animosity. To be fair, rap has always been competitive. Within that you got individual stories like 2pac and biggie.
And yeah infamous mobb deep is great. I must look like a twat mouthing the words being a white middle class pussy. It's quite gangsta

It was a fallout out between Biggie and 2pac after he thought Big set him up to get shot and robbed. It escalated from there with Death row v Bad boy and then west vs east.

And if you haven't heard Hit Em Up yet you're in for a treat. My initial opinion of 2pac was so different to how he comes across now. It's probably because I listened to one of those Spotify compilations initially and it was all his more reflective tracks like Keep Ya Head Up and Dear Mama. He's aggro AF. I do think Hit Em Up is a great track though Gave Doggystyle another go last night on a whim and really enjoyed it. Apart from a couple of tracks, I like it a lot. Maybe just wasn't in the mood before or it's because I've listened to other stuff since. Glad I revisted it anyway
Been listening to more 'golden age' stuff. Scratching is kinda cool On the subject of dark stuff, Big L is well up there; "No dame can give me a bad name, I got mad fame

Big L is great.
For that sort of style Lloyd Banks is pretty good. His cold corner and Halloween Havoc mixtape stuff is great. And his new album is worth a listen.

Loved Rap until mid 2000's, in my opinion it became more mumble or singing than pure flow.
In the last 15 years I can only recommend one album and that's Slaughterhouses debut album, that's the style I miss!
