I don't doubt there were issues with phony tickets, possibly resulting in people climbing the gates. But that doesn't give you carte blanche to start acting like thugs. Seems very much like they were waiting for an excuse to let people have it.

The elephant in the room seems to be if the organisation was such a disaster then how come we aren’t seeing similar footage of the Real fans? Other side of the ground is more open. Liverpool end had to use the south west metro station, all fans were diverted to one narrow road for security checks and that created the huge bottleneck. Wilson goes into a bit of detail on today’s Football Weekly, the media entrance is on the same side so he experienced it firsthand.

I’d assume 40k Real fans also didn’t travel without tickets.
Edit: Haven’t had a chance to listen to the new football weekly yet.

Being English football fans, and Liverpool fans in particular, gives the police an excuse. Just like being an immigrant does normally. Again this is a common problem with the police in France.

First thing I do when I book a weekend city break is take a 12 week linguistic course so the people I'm giving business to treat me with common decency in a polite manner. I tried learning a bit of Greek when I went to Cyprus last year, to try seem less like an English dickhead in Cyprus. Quickly discovered that pretty much everyone working in hospitality there is Eastern European with a decent level of English and not a word of Greek. Turns out it’s about as useful as learning Welsh for a trip to Cardiff. You should put your troubles to some use and visit Greece if you get the chance; I'm quite sure you'll get some (mostly older) folks working in hospitality that would love to converse in Greek!

Interesting thread, with UEFA putting the blame squarely on the French authorities

Sounds like someone should have left a tip when they were throwing a bung over for the hosting rights.

FWIW re: language, with how widespread English is nowadays you'd be hard pressed to find anyone in hospitality that doesn't have at least a rudimentary grasp of the language, regardless of the country. As long as the area you're at sees some level of tourism at least.
Which is to say, anyone that's an asshole to tourists that happen to be unable to speak the country language fluently is, well, an asshole. It's a nice gesture if you make the effort to learn it, to be sure, and it will likely be appreciated in turn, but getting subpar service (or straight up scams) just because you didn't is 100% a bellend move imo.

I wasn't trying to suggest that French hospitality staff can/so/should be rude due to people not speaking their language, you should expect decent service no matter where you go as long as you're not being a prick obviously). My point is that speaking French seems to make a big difference in France , you could say this applies anywhere but IMO seems to be more pronounced in France. In Paris you get shit service in tourist traps same as the world over, I don't think language is the point.

I do recall a lot of rumors that the French are more elitist than most in that regard, though. And of course, not speaking the language on its own is never an excuse for others to be rude to you.

I don't think we, as native English speakers , often don't realise just how privileged we are when it comes to travelling tbh.

Speaking Greek (extremely badly) in Greece only ever got Greek replies in places that knew me as a regular as everywhere else everyone wanted to practice their English.

Tbf, The Cypriots are pretty fluent in English or at least the ones near any military camps. Lived there as a kid and they'd only ever want to speak in English with us rather than teach us Greek. Out of all the countries I've lived I the Dutch are the best at English. Better than most Brits. Haha the shit I find on this forum. Episkopi, late 90s.

We nearly went to the dump that was BG but landed in Epi as it went through development. Probably the best 2 1/2 years of my life, really. Troodos mountains one day and beach the next.

You going to discover you used to be classmates? It wouldn't be that strange. I met my wife in Germany at 14,her family got posted a few years later and we met at a random party in the UK 10 yrs later. geefe The best thing about Cyprus is that school would finish at 1.30 so you had the rest of the day at the beach.

I don’t understand what London has to do with anything. Just the forum Scottish contingent unable to resist a dig at anything about England. Where's the imaginary dig at England ?

Been away camping for the weekend so I wasn’t around to jinx the final.
So the best team in the world, of all time ever, only won a domestic cup double? What a shame....😊

Heh, Akrotiri mid 90s. One of the nicer postings we had. Dad got posted there in there in the 70's, pretty idyllic, then the Turkish invasion took place, not so idyllic. Evacuated across the island to safety.

What a shame....😊 Team with the world’s best forward line plays three cup finals without scoring, but loses league to a team that scored 99 goals without having any forwards. Football’s weird these days.

Back home after a long weekend music festival. Caught the scoreline on the night and wasn't surprised. Far from convincing in the domestic cups and flagging by the end of the season, ripe for the taking by a Real side that had wrapped things up.
Will get round to the highlights later but still happy to have a couple of bits of silverware. Those barren years weren't so long ago.
Maybe the media can dial down the hyperbole next season. But when subscriptions are there to be sold, I doubt that will happen.

I do wonder if the old reputation of English fans still exist in some European countries so areshole police/security don't give any benefit of the doubt and have an excuse to be pricks. Also exists in this thread, it seems.
