It’s been quite a long time since gen 1s have been an issue on their hardware. Things like the touch thing on the mbp looked a bit off a stupid idea before release and a cumbersome solution to a problem that didn’t exist. Sticking a usbc port into something isn’t the same.
I’m starting well clear of their vr headset though. The price is enough to do that but I can’t imagine it actually being very good for a few years.

That MBP was such a lemon, no MagSafe, no SD slot, Touch Bar, shitty keyboard. Can’t believe I got well over a grand trade in for that piece of shit

The phones and ipads were all using the bionic chips for years, which the M1 built on so its not like they were reinventing the wheel. Sure, but OSX and everything that runs on it had to be rewritten. And it not only worked on day 1, it ran better in some cases.

Sticking a usbc port into something isn’t the same. No, well, exactly, its a revision. Also, just to clarify: I did say 'rule of thumb' not 'everything new release is shit'.

Yeah - I was actually astonished at what they were able to achieve, and how well the Rosetta 2 layer worked. In Software Engineering circles it's basically spoken of as a masterclass. For sure they knew the hardware inside out, but getting the OS and the Apps and the ecosystem migrated without everything imploding? Gold standard.

Thing is it wasn't Day 1, you can guarantee that they'd had it running on their own chips in parallel for years - same as they did previously for Intel chips while they were still on PowerPC.

They had it running internally since around 2011, and the intel chips apple used were so shit that Rosetta didn’t have to be too clever to run without a performance hit. They took no chances with the transition

Well yes - but guess what? They had all those other "gen 1" products running internally for years as well. That's how products are made.

I'll grant you that was a long one, but the point stands. It's not any less impressive to me because they took their time and did it right.

Yeah I don't think you can hold it against them that they did their homework. If you bought a M1 macbook day 1 it all mostly worked.

I wasn’t saying it wasn’t impressive, just that they didn’t fuck around

The phones and ipads were all using the bionic chips for years, which the M1 built on so its not like they were reinventing the wheel. I'd have expected more (hardware) problems with the M2 Air than the M1, as the former is basically a gen 1 product except for the chip. It was a complete redesign of the Air. On the software side, it also helped that macOS and iOS share a lot of code. Another shit 1st gen product: HomePod. Lots of hardware defects after a few years (made popping sounds every now and then even when not using it).

That’s odd, I’ve got 2 OG homepods and one mini in the house, haven’t had any popping sounds. My main annoyance is that they all connect to my devices via the wifi router only and my wifi can be a bit flaky

It's supposedly a widespread problem, google "homepod popping noise". After half a year of doing that (first I had to realise it was the HomePod, as it did it randomly, maybe twice a day, so at first I wasn't sure what even produced that sound), it made one last loud (and I mean loud) popping noise and it was dead.
The mini and the 2nd gen regular HomePod are fine so far, haven't read about any problems so far.

What would you guys say is the best value iPhone now? I'm quite keen on the 3x zoom so thinking either 13 Pro, 14 Pro or 15 Pro... very happy to buy used, but wondering if since the 15 Pro has had a £100 price drop whether new (with a warranty, and a guarantee that it's a genuine battery and screen) is worth the extra. Thanks

I would say always buy the latest model. Value is a bit subjective. But if money is an issue then lots of 14 Pros will be hitting the market in the next couple of weeks as people upgrade so maybe that? Personally I'm still very happy with my 13 Pro so not upgrading this year.

Thanks I'd say unless you're going to get used half price or less then you should get a new one. If you look after it it should last you about 4 years!

If you can wait a few months further you can find 'like new' devices at places like Giffgaff for a considerable discount.

I’m intending to pre-order a 15 today. The Apple Store pre-orders go live at 1pm. Anyone have any experience pre-ordering from Apple and can say how likely Apple’s website will hold up, or should I prepare myself for site meltdown and having to refresh my browser endlessly?
(I figured Apple might be a better choice than Amazon, but I guess I could hedge my bets.)

I preordered on release day a couple of cycles ago, my recollection is that the website held up well but make sure you're ready to go at five to one and keep refreshing the app (you using the Store app on the phone?) because shipping dates quickly start falling back to the far future.
edit - if you have to do it in a browser definitely do it on the Apple website, not Amazon

When I did it for the 13 pro there were no issues at all and stock was fine if you’re flexible about colour.

Cheers Otto. I confess I was planning just accessing the store via Safari (I think I deleted the store app years ago!), but that’s a good shout. I’ve just re-downloaded it.

Well, the Apple Store did shit the bed for a little while there, but it eventually started working and I got my order in. It’s due to be delivered in a week’s time! iPhone 15, 128GB in Blue.
It’s been years since I had a new phone (as my trusty XR fully demonstrates!) so I’m very excited for this.😀

Anyone else have problems with crackly Airpod Pros? Gen 1. It's only ever the left one for me. Turning noise cancellation solves it but defeats the purpose of using them. I've cleaned the grills as much as I can and changed the tips.

Yes, very common fault. They had an exchange program a couple of years ago, I handed over mine in store for new earbuds, now the left one is starting to crackle again. I think it’s an issue with the microphone that picks up external noise. There’s no fix as far as I’m aware
