Yep, soooo good. Didn't even realise that was John Turturo. Which one was he? The guy that really looks, sounds and acts like John Turturro? Yep, I just haven't seen him for years and was being dim.

Pachinko is indeed a bit special. ecosse - think this would be right up your street, if you're not already on it.

It could’ve been quite a lot shorter, but I think that if most shows these days.
I am liking that AppleTV seems to have a high percentage of good stuff coming now. They are definitely avoiding the Netflix approach of spamming the service with loads of shit and then having the occasional brilliant show or film.

I never even bothered with Apple TV until I borrowed my sister's account just to see if Ted Lasso was worth watching after all, really enjoyed that.
I don't think it's got a huge amount of content but what it has is incredibly good. Bit annoying that Apple have turned stingy with the free subs from buying their products now though, my sister's account is about to expire (after I added the PS5 6 months) so I'll have to activate the free 5 months Barclaycard were offering, for new accounts, a while ago, hopefully that's still live.

Severance - tickles your balls for 9 hours then ends on a cliffhanger that we should have reached around episode 4 or 5. The entire thing felt like a trailer for something more interesting. After watching Invasion, every other show is like fast-forwarding a cocaine trip on crack.

I think in the two years or so it’s been going I’ve only paid for 3 months. Got 1 year free with a purchase and now I’ve had 6 months from Barclaycard.

Apparently, Apple (along with Britbox and Discovery) have the highest churn rate of users. Netflix and Amazon the least.

I suspect the small amount of content on Apple TV+ is probably responsible for the churn. A lot of it is extremely good (some is dire, hello Invasion, good job making Foundation look like a masterpiece of science fiction), but there's only so much of it. Once Slow Horses is done I imagine I'll cancel it at least until there are new seasons of couple of other shows I like on there (Mystic Quest for one).

It's getting very close to critical mass. Right now it's in the early Netlix place where I'd sub for a series I was interested in then turn it off for six months. That said, I have been paying for the sub for the last five months, and gotten good value from it, so...

Yeah the only reason I even kept a Netflix sub in Ye Olde Dayes was because back then they didn't stop you trivially VPN'ing (or whatever) to the US and watching the much better selection there. Eventually they did but not until they'd got "critical mass" as you correctly put it. Sensible. I think Apple is still a ways off from a rolling sub - I have had okay value from it for, say, six months, but now I'm "running on fumes", and only because I started watching Slow Horses am I still with them.
Of course I just cancelled Netflix for the second time in six months because of their price increase. It's like, bitches, you're about to lose Star Trek, which was a good part of why I stayed subbed to you, this is not the right time for a price hike just because you have "US The Office" or whatever.

Same reason Amazon has a low churn I expect. People were paying for prime before prime video was a thing.

Yeah, if Sonos supported hi res Apple Music, I would probably roll it all into a family sub or something. But after the free year the wife got with her iPhone goes, it’s getting cancelled. There just isn’t enough content to keep a sub rolling.
Unless the iPhone 14 has enough to force an upgrade from my 11 and I get another year.

They're only giving 3 months with hardware at the moment.

Slow Horses is actually pretty great but it’s definitely the kind of thing you could binge in a weekend. Same with pretty much everything I’ve watched on there. There’s nothing on there you couldn’t burn through in a months sub.

The Barclaycard offer was still valid so I'm sorted until September at least.

There’s nothing on there you couldn’t burn through in a months sub. Sure. But for people who don't necessarily spend that long watching shows/movies in a month, it's a reasonable proposition. Long gone are the days I had time to binge on a service. I have Elden Ring to complete several times over!

Binge is probably the wrong word but I think even at a slowish pace, you’d see most of that the service has to offer quite quickly. Which is fine and due to their content curation and whatnot.
There’s no pool of infinite garbage like Big Bang theory that people will just leave on in the background to keep you going between content drops.

Last quarter, Netflix lost 200k subscriptions, the first loss in 10 years. Buuut, they lost all of their 700k Russian subscriptions, so it was a 500k gain really. Buuut the 2nd, they are forecasting an additional 2 million subscriber loss for the current quarter. www.cnbc.com/2022/04/19/netflix-nflx-earnings-q1-2022.html

I guess I can't totally blame them for the Marvel shows though.

I could have watched another 9 hours of people walking the halls in Severance! Putting aesthetic aside and thinking about the story, I wonder if the producers have learned the lessons from Lost? Having said that it's so clever and I really loved it!
Bargain for a month's sub, looking forward to the second season.

I think the Netflix 200k subscriber loss is separate from the Russian cut offs.

Just watched the final episode of WeCrashed. Overall, it's quite strong and never boring, and certainly rubs in the 'shitty people nearly always manage to end up covered in money' message. All the performances are quite strong, but Anne Hathaway steals it as an absolutely loathsome caricature of a person. Better than the similar The Dropout (what I've watched of it).

Slow Horses was the best thing I watched on Apple TV in the three months I had it. I'd almost consider a sub for this.

Just finished Black Bird / The Falcon’s Tale where convicted drug dealer Taron Egerton is given the chance to commute his sentence by gaining the trust of another inmate and revealing the location of the buried bodies. It’s superb, with a great script, acting and a real weight to it. Maybe a wee bit rushed at the end, but you won’t want to spend more than 6 hours with some of these lot.
Very highly recommended. Going to try Slow Horses next
