Finished Monarch a week or so back. I like that it fits so accurately to the movies, and essentially leads into the next one. I quite like the Godzilla/Kong films, despite the last one being hot garbage.

I said this in the review thread but if the budget was so tight that they could only afford to have 20 seconds of monster in an hour long monster show, there is plenty of fat they could cut to lower the episode count and double the screen time for Godzilla. Not massively fussed about learning the intricate details of Monarchs funding appropriation committees.
I know its called 'Monarch' and not 'Kaiju Battle Hour' but, come on.

I'm at a similar halfway point and I'm enjoying it too, it's a damn sight better than "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" was, that had loads of kaiju but fucking awful writing.

Some of it isn't *that* much better. I'm really not sure what making the main object of The Quest a bigamist brings to the party.
It sounds like I hate it more than I did, it's fine. I just don't think, after watching 4 (?) of these movies, anyone was left thinking 'Godzilla is fine but what I really want to know is how Monarch got started'. The central premise is just not very interesting (I say central it did thankfully start taking a back seat to the monterverse in the last two episodes).

I dislike being tricked into watching inter personal dramas by high concept shows.

I’d have preferred if they got rid of all the personal drama. There’s still enough there for the show without it and would have improved it.
I don’t care about random person with family issues. It’s supposed to be shit monarch/kaiju, not some guy getting married to two different people. It didn’t really seem to have much relevance to the plot other than dragging things out and some bickering.

I dislike being tricked into watching inter personal dramas by high concept shows. You're joking but Battlestar Galactica cursed at least a decade of sci-fi with this. 'I know we have been sent back in time to the era of the dinosaurs and are fighting aliens but I hate my dad and my mom doesn't get me. Now lets have a long talk about our feelings'.

My breaking point was Terra Nova. Absolute horse shit. That show began a life long disdain of people popping wheelies on motorbikes in films and TV. You're a time travelling motorcyclist chasing dinosaurs through prehistoric forests, do you really need to make it more radical?

So I'm now on episode six of Monarch and the quality has taken a nose dive. Episode 5 was especially absolute melodramatic crap... I'm going to see it through though as I presume I'm going to get some big monster action in the last episode?

There’s some monster action. It might not be as spectacular as you’re hoping.

Two episodes of Masters of the Air are out. I’ve got a hankering for B17 Flying Fortress, but perhaps that better stay in the past.
Edit: Also, the first episode of this (and lots of other Apple stuff) is free to watch.

Watched both episodes, seems distinctly... meh. The stuff in the air is great, but the stuff on the ground is like it was written by AI; absolutely ridden with clichés throughout.

I did feel a bit cringey with their bust-up with the RAF.

Personally, I never thought it would be half as good as Band of Brothers, and so far its way off. It wasn’t going to be easy ( no pun intended) to try and craft an ongoing drama where each week they take off, many get shot down, and some return. Especially as each B17 apparently had a crew of 10. No time to build up the relationships and characters.
I hear there’s some POW stuff later in the series, presumably to try and keep the fx budget down. I’ll keep watching for now, but it’s a shame it isn’t better.

That's disappointing. The Gurniad review is positively glowing.

Lessons in Chemistry 8/10
Brie Larson stars as a chemistry graduate battling misogyny and bigotry in 1950’s California. It’s very well done, maybe a bit twee in parts, but always enjoyable. Recommended.

I couldn't even finish The King's Man, so wasn't exactly holding out hope for this one. Sounds like it's even worse than expected.

He hasn't made a good film since the first Kingsman. The first one was quite entertaining. Fell off a cliff after so not surprised this is shite.

The third (?) one is better than the second, I think. Probably not much in it, tbh, but I thought the second one was shite. He is quite hit and miss because that style is just completely obnoxious without the substance to back it up but you can't deny that his movies do tend to make an impact even if they don't actually hold up that well to a second viewing.

It’s a series of films that, after the first one, they seem to just exist. I have no memory of them getting promoted or released but they’re just there.
Just looked them up and saw he’s married to Claudia Schiffer?!
