Perhaps but going from the SkillUp he does make a salient point about this game following the always online model of Bethesda's output of Fallout 76, Wolfenstein Youngblood and this. It's clear none of them did well, although I believe 76 is doing better now. I don't think a looter shooter fits Arkane and Harvey Smith has said in an interview that he's looking forward to going back to something more curated like Dishonoured. |

Something that's quickly become clear, Game is good = that's because it was being made before MS bought them. Game bad = wtf MS. Well, MS being the owner of the studio, publisher and platform have the power to not release it in this state, so yeah. Like Halo. It’s obviously a developer issue at heart but they aren’t forcing themselves to ship the title. By the sounds of it MS are still pretty hands off when it comes to Bethesdas studios. |

We have had hifi rush and Minecraft legends from ms this year which are both excellent games. It's not like everything they put out is bad.

Nah, it’s wank. It deserves a trouncing. While I do think ‘they are piling on for the clicks’ is always dumb I will give you both the fact that this seems to be the lightning rod for a lot of cumulative grievances people have. Like everything everyone hates about this kind of game rolled into one package and they just seem absolutely fucking sick of it. The gear system, the UI, the controls, the general lack of care and a 100 other irritations baked into one game seems to have broken the camels back and people probably are going in a bit harder than they might normally. I think it is definitely this, but also that people never expected or wanted Arkane to be making this kind of bland nonsense. I don't think, say, Dead Island 2 is getting the same amount of flak, because nobody ever expected that to turn out well. |

The navigation of the (kind of) open world could get a bit annoying, but other than that it was really quite enjoyable.
The only other games anywhere close I could come up with are just VTM Redemption, which also doesn't have much in terms of C&C, immersive sim elements and so on, and Bloodlust: Shadowhunter and its sequel are more dungeon crawlers I think.
On Arkane being AAA: In 2020 they had 150+ people according to wiki. Haven't found anything more up-to-date, but that would make it more like a big AA studio I think. Dying Light 2 was made by four times as many developers and god knows how many are involved with Far Cry, CoD etc.

The Game Star reviewer isn't any more positive.
He likes the setting visually, but recommends to just ignore the many, many notes in the game, as he apparently doesn't have much respect for the setting. Performance is not great, but he actually didn't say much about bugs, bad controls and such. But many main missions are apparently pretty short and the rest nothing much to write home about in comparison to what Arkane have managed before.
He didn't say too much about the FPS-aspect, just that the arsenal is mostly stock-standard and the loot system doesn't significantly change the weapons. The lack of immersive sim elements is another familiar point he makes and the skills didn't matter much in coop. The lack of difficulty is yet another repeat and so is the simple AI.

63 on metacritic. Sounds about right to me on what I've played, a 6 or a 7. A bit over average but for me it's fun due to the setting, gunplay and co op shenanigans. Not the hyperbolic shite by a lot of these YouTuber reviews saying it's one of the worst games ever and a total wreck. Click bait and they know they will get double of the views if they go ott on the hate. Hate sells. A review of this titled "redfall average game" would get hardly any views versus "redfall is the worst game of the year!!!!!"

ACG I believe said probably worst game of the year so far and skillup. I'm sure plenty more as I've only watched those two. I did notice old angry Joe also has a long rant up about it and it wouldn't be surprising if he also said similar such ott shite. Get those views!

Like I say, I think this is the/a turning point where things just came to a head. Its also uniquely disappointing because its Arkane and everyone expected better.
If this was dropped onto steam for 30 quid this wouldnt have even warranted a thread, much less a ten pager.

Look we already at 10 pages which most game topics don't reach outside the big hitters, especially not this quickly. I've been on the side where you are, wondering why a game I'm enjoying is getting hate. I can see it from both sides, so I do know where you're coming from. Perhaps if I'd actually played it myself my view would be different.
As Nick says though, it's very much released at a time where people are fed up of having high profile games arrive in a shit poor state. Combine that with Arkane's previous reputation and the expections people had (in part due to the huge marketing push - I mean I've been seeing Redfall everywhere for weekes and weeks) and you've got what we have now. Everyone is just getting fucked off.

I saw a chart the other day that had the best games of 2023 so far as Resi 4, Metroid Prime, Dead Space and Advance Wars.... |
