I went to university in Southampton. There was a student club called Jumpin' Jaks (think it was a chain) which was housed in a leisure complex with a cinema, bowling alley... one of those places. It was every bit as shite as it sounds, and infamously, there was an incident in 2003 where a pipe in the club's ceiling burst and everyone inside was showered in shit. Matt Le Tissier was often found drinking in the corner (think he was still playing for Eastleigh at the time). He was the oldest person there by probably fifteen years. I remember it being a bit creepy, but also quite sad. Like he knew that shitty club was his level, so he made himself comfortable there. He would only have been 35 ish right ? He is a nob of course now - but going out clubbing at 35 with his status at the time is something I can see. Much like Shearer I guess anytime he goes anywhere in Newcastle (to this day). He was proper “legend” status at the time in Soton. He was a local legend. But that’s the thing - Jaks was full of students, not locals. Most kind of knew who he was but weren’t sure why he was there. I was surprised to figure out he must have been in his 30s as he looked much older… all those free dinners at Kuti’s had started to dig their buttery claws in.

I worked at Frankie and Bennys in Leisure World for about a year. Amazed I made it out alive. The whole place is chained up now. Good. Was Leisure World the one with the Crystal Maze game back in the 90s? Laser Quest as well. Or was that a different place?

Pretty sure it was Jumping Jack's in So'ton that I had to have a wee kip in the loos on my best mate's stag do. After a tactical chunder I think. Thay was nearly 30 years ago. Christ.

Did future Dougs eventually learn from young Dougs' youthful drinking errors?

Haha, I had many a power nap on a pub or club shitter back in the day. Older me eventually figured out my limits, and that shots are never a good idea.

Did future Dougs eventually learn from young Dougs' youthful drinking errors? He'll get back to you soon, he's just having a tactical chunder and a wee kip, then we're all off to the next club to meet Matt.

You have seen the threads. I think you know the answer to that! Although I haven't been ill whilst on a session for a long time. So... maybe?

To be more specific tequila shots are my kryptonite. Whenever I've had them they just ruin my night and I pretty much barf not long after.

Went there occasionally, but normally would avoid it as it had mostly old people in it. Of course, being 18-20, old meant 30+. As far as I know, being famous wasn't an excuse for any of them.

Leisure World was the cinema, a bit of an arcade, possibly a bowling alley, some mid chain restaurants, plus Ikon and Envy, which were the bane of my life after a closing shift on Saturday night.

Was an Oceana when I lived there. Felt old going into it in my mid 20s.
Had the casino in the building next door where you'd see some really sorry sights.

Hold on, my hometown (Hemel Hempstead) wasn't the *only* place to have a Leisure World complete with Jumpin' Jak's and nightclubs with shit names like Lava and Ignite?
Mind blown! I honestly thought that particular combo was unique to our shit hole!

Used to go to the Hemel one quite often when St Albans cinema closed. Hard to image now but it had that massive waterpark.

As youngsters we would avoid our usual nightclub (Colonel Bogeys, Sandown) on some nights when it was clearly 21+ only as we thought everyone was too old. In reality most were probably 25-30. Eejits.

Makes sense! Used to go there with my cousins when visiting my grandparents who (unfortunatley) lived on the Millbrook estate. Great memories doing the Crystal Maze game.

My mates are going to a jungle next month and asked if I wanted to go. The last time I went, I felt very self conscious but this time a good friends daughter who is in her first year at uni is going to be there, so no, I'm done. Its insane. She had basically the same freshers experience as we did a billion years ago, right down to doing the student DJ thing. /crumbles into dust

Tequila shots at a student bar* I went to were a gamble, Heads or tails with a pound coin, if you win you keep the pound.
*Barney McGrews in manchester in the mid 90s.
Also crumbles to dust.
