Yeah, that is the Marc Almond story. Rod Stewart is a fanny rat to the point that he has said 'to save me from another divorce, I'm just going to find a woman I don't like and buy her a house' The stomach pump story was attached to Rod - if you Google "Rod Stewart Stomach Pump" the first hits are articles where Rod refutes it. I mean it's all nonsense so it's probably been attributed to others too.

Oh God damnit, no... The guy was a giant of anime, manga and even videogames, I don't think it's a stretch to say that anime as we know it wouldn't exist if it weren't for his influence... Still kinda crazy to think that my first experience with something he worked on was Blue Dragon, of all things... RIP legend o7 Reading Masashi Kishimoto's (Naruto) and Eiichiro Oda's (One Piece) (I'm posting Reddit links because they have translations) responses was pretty heartwrenching too...

(The little robot on the announcement is Torippo, essentially his self-insert in various works but this particular appearance is actually from Blue Dragon... My childhood )

Absolutely gutted. Guy created one of my favourite things ever. Previously only Joe Strummer and Toots Hibbert ever got an audible from me when reading about a death. Pratchett is by far the celeb death that's had the biggest actual impact on me. Adam Yauch, MCA, was also quite high on the "actually feel genuinely sad" scale.

Dimebag Darrell’s murder was quite a hit for me. Pantera were probably the first band I discovered for myself even independent of my other teenager metalhead friends at school so he’d basically been part of my musical landscape from when I was about 13. Me and a friend queued up the entire live album on the jukebox of a local rock bar the next afternoon. and then everyone applauded

I think the first time I encountered Toriyamas character designs was in Chrono Trigger.

Yeah they were great. As others have said it's crazy to think how massive his influence was on what manga and animé is today as well western comics and the superhero movies from those comics. It's quite the fucking achievement from someone who was reportedly very humble. Now I'm also how thinking how influential Berserk has been on so many things too and now they're both gone.

I mentioned it, but mine was Blue Dragon. Possibly the least likely of the franchises Toriyama worked on It's pretty clear in hindsight that, while his characters were very distinct, he also had several archetypes to base them on that made his style instantly recognizable across his works: •The plucky, usually spiky-haired protagonist (CT: Chrono, DB: Goku, DQ: DQ5's true Zenithian hero, plus DQ7/9's protagonists, BD: Shu) •The slightly more serious guy (CT: Frog, DB: Trunks, DQ: 4/11's protagonists, BD: Jiro) •The energetic, outspoken girl, sometimes with a tech knack (CT: Marle/Lucca, DB: Bulma/Chichi, DQ: Alena/Maya, Bianca etc BD: Kluke) •The antagonist turned rival and sometimes ally (tagged because why not) (CT: Magus, DB: Vegeta/Android 17, DQ: Psaro, Hendryk, Terry, BD: General Logi -anime-exclusive) •The mature, straight-laced woman, sometimes an enemy (CT: Ayla, DB: Androids 18/21, Vados, Towa, DQ: Meena, Debora, Jade, BD: Zola -plus Cynthia and Delphinium in the anime-) Obviously this isn't an exhaustive list, but the general parallels in design philosophy are rather obvious, and I think it speaks to his skill that he was able to make them look and feel distinct, both in design and personality, while keeping the recognizable similarities

I wish we could give him a send off of a 21 Kamehameha salute. I wish Dragon Balls were real, but I think Shenron can't reverse death from natural causes anyway... Super Dragon Balls, maybe?

I'd honestly never heard of Toriyama before yesterday, but reading through various news articles and obituaries, it's clear that he was a very talented and influential guy. RIP.

There have been several celebrity deaths that have saddened me over the years, but the one that upset me the most was George Carlin.

Karl Wallinger, who you’ve probably not heard of but know his music. I really liked World Party. He mentored Guy Chambers, wrote and performed the original She’s The One that Robbie Williams made famous. Whole of the Moon wouldn’t have been half as good without his influence

Seeing how old these people are does make me question whether it's worth putting so much into my pension.

If you can put enough in to retire at 60, then absolutely. But it all starts to look less valuable the longer you have to work!

I reckon I'll be looking at 68 before I can retire, at least, unless something happens. And I'm always mindful that my dad died at 60, albeit due to a heart condition that I've been cleared of, but it does seem like a crap shoot sometimes.

Neither of my parents made it to retirement (one a very long way off), but my aunt is in her 80s and my grandmother made it to 96 with all her faculties too.

It is definitely a crap shoot. I'll hopefully go at 60. If I hung on until 67, my pension would be ridiculous imo but fuck that, would rather take half that much earlier.
Edit: my dad made retirement but did so with a cancer diagnosis from 70, died at 75. My old dear did well (84) and my grandma was 98 so who the fuck knows.

My grandad on my mum’s side dropped dead of a heart attack out of the blue at 58. My dad (on my dad’s side ) died of lung cancer at… 58. My grandad on my dad’s side lived to his 70s and enjoyed his retirement for a bit so fingers crossed I guess.
