I still remember being at a house party with Paul from yourcodenameis:milo telling us they were going to record their ep with him and no one believing him.
Afterwards they all said he was an awesome dude to them and how switched on he was about everything. Basically the smartest guy any of them had ever met.

Bollocks. In Utero is my Albini jam. Such a fuck-off sound to it, as god intended. Sad news.

I only just saw this news elsewhere, fucking hell. Albini was a legend, the sheer volume of bands he worked with and recorded, whilst also creating his own great work with Big Black and Shellac...gutted beyond words. Big, big loss.

Just working through my Albini playlist on Spotify - forgot just how many great artists he produced for (apart from the obvious big ones) Cloud Nothings, Mclusky, Nina Nastasia, Gogol Bordello, Slint, The Breeders...
One of my favourite gigs ever was Shellac headlining with Mclusky supporting at Scala (turned out to be one of Mclusky's last ever gigs), was a brilliant Albini night.

Gutted to hear this one.
Cloud Nothings and Mclusky are in my regular rotation. Still prefer his version of Fugazi's In on the Kill Taker too.
RIP.

I've been a music-obsessed nerd for the vast majority of my life.
Looking at my record collection today, I don't think there's any one individual who has had a greater impact thereupon than Steve Albini - not just in terms of the albums he made with his own bands, but those he recorded for others as well.
This fucking sucks.

Steve Albini on the death of D. Boon.
Pretty much sums up how I feel about Albini's passing - he meant it, and that means something to me.

And they did not disappoint! So glad they went with him on it (don't think there was any doubt with Kurt), and glad they went with his recommendation of Pachyderm - when you look at photos of that place, it looks exactly how In Utero sounds. Particularly when they recorded during a freezing, snowy, icy winter up there.
Steve was bang on about potential record label interference of course, he saw that coming a mile off... at least they only managed to force remixes of the singles.

Obviously its a contemporary account but the stuff about him in Our Band Could Be Your Life just marks him out, even among that lot, as someone with a singular vision and drive to do it right.

Was shocked and saddened when I heard about Albini last night.
His work with Pixies and The Breeders are standouts for me, but he worked with an astonishing amount of artists over his career, and his approach to music making (and the industry) was refreshing and to be admired. The results of his approach to making a record speak for themselves.
The way he acknowledged his past mistakes was also something I respected, and he seemed to be a genuinely nice person looking to help artists and promote new bands.
During lockdown I watched a lot of videos of him just talking about music production. Some I understood, some went over my head, but I found him interesting and soothing at the same time. He was like a musical Fred Dibnah in expressing his enthusiasm (and displeasures) for the subject and just seemed like a normal bloke doing what he loved.
Chuck in a couple of World Series of Poker bracelets, and he was clearly gifted in more than just music.
A big loss indeed.

The world would be a better place if more of those in power thought like this. It's a personal manifesto of pure integrity. It's beautiful. And as was mentioned earlier, sure enough, the corporate fucks did come in and interfere - but at least a compromise was reached (re: glossier production of All Apologies if I recall correctly). His very public, very honest ownership of the awfulness of things he said when younger is also something most of us could learn from. I'm not sure I would have considered Albini to be a future role model when I first got to know him in the late 80s and 90s. But he is now. Genuinely one of the greats. Fuck.

Albini's willingness to have a reckoning with his 'edgelord' past - to face up to the shit he'd said and done in his youth, express contrition for it, and keep striving to be a better person - was genuinely inspirational. Not to derail the thread by bringing still-living thundercunts into it, but compare this interview with the kind of doubling-down shit we've seen from the likes of Morrissey and Glinner over the years. It's night and fucking day.

Half of Hollywood owes everything to that man. He gave breaks in his cheap films to so many big name directors and actors from the 70s and 80s that it's arguable that Terminator, The Godfather and Goodfellas wouldn't exist without him, among many many others.

Roger Corman was a true legend and it's nice that it's been remembered recently he made a much better Magnificent Seven in space movie than a recent shit version.

Regarding the specifics of his claims (and why he felt the need to present them as some kind of big secret he'd unearthed, I've no idea - none of this stuff had been hidden away!), Albini was a self-admitted edgelord during the early part of his career. This stuff was the nadir of that phase. If he'd really wanted to confront Albini about it, the guy could easily have done so; instead, he chose to wait until Albini had died, then published his little screed under the guise of bringing truth to the masses. I'm not going to defend some of the awful shit Steve said and did in the name of being provocative and offensive, save to point out that later in life he owned his missteps, expressed contrition for them, and kept working to be a better person. Obviously I'm not by any means unbiased, but I genuinely believe that this interview carries far more probative weight than a Medium post written by a convicted felon: melmagazine.com/en-us/story/steve-albini-counsel-culture-interviewJust my $0.02.
