We have quite a decent dark souls community here so I'm sure you will find what you desire. We even have a resident expert at falling of ledges in souls games should you need any tips. I fucking heard that.

IIRC that particular moderator is also on RPS, but it's not the moderator that people are complaining about right now.

A question for our good RPS friends: how long ago did your site start offering the "supporter" scheme and/or enforcing to stop blocking ads? In other words, how long are they trying to monetize RPS and do you feel it's working?

It's pronounced 'Fonteurs', because we were once Euro. No-one better create a 'national font' now we've stupidly brexited. I guess that daft racist who got binned at the start sort of tried. The twat. It's Fonties

In other words, how long are they trying to monetize RPS and do you feel it's working? The supporter program started in 2010 or thereabouts. No idea how successful it's been, but they've always been pretty bad at trying to get people to sign up so it's likely not a big income source for the site. I don't remember when but they outsourced their ads to the Eurogamer marketing team at some point after that. When the site was sold there were some changes to how ads were served and some effort to circumvent blocking. Ads started appearing on embedded videos, some images and videos wouldn't be served at all if you didn't let the ads through etc.
I don't know what it's like with an ad blocker at the moment as I am still a supporter and only browse the site on my PC.

skalpadda , Thank you for the reply. It's been ages since I last visited RPS (if I recall correctly) and had not seen any of it. As for ad-block, it would not let me browse around the site at all and the only two options offered were either pay for an ad-free sub or disable ad-block. For reference, EuroGamer can still be browsed with ad-block enabled, they just try to make you feel a little bad about it

It seems like they're making a bit of a more concerted (or at least, less disorganised) push with the supporter program recently. Especially since they redesigned the front page, which allowed them to highlight the content a little more.
I don't begrudge them the idea, and imho it's usually relatively unobtrusive and optional. I wish they'd let more of Sin's articles free though!

It probably would have but it was less effort to recycle craigy's Eurogamer post and the end result is the same.

I'm going through my posts on RPS to see if there's anything I really want to save, and this is definitely one. Don't think there's a better thread for it, so here you go.

Sorry guys. Can truly sympathise. It's a bit of a gut punch regardless of how much you're expecting it.

I hope you get a front page Eulogy, I can't see one yet. EG didn't and the Editor admits that was a mistake.

For reference, EuroGamer can still be browsed with ad-block enabled, they just try to make you feel a little bad about it I looked through some old RPS stuff in a last minute nostalgia binge before the forum was axed and realised I remembered this a bit wrong. Not that it matters much in this context, but for the sake of not having lied on the internet: The proper RPS supporter program with perks and supporter articles started a bit over 6 years ago. Before that there was a PayPal thing without any formal rewards or exclusives, though they'd occasionally email out game keys to people and there was a newsletter that always started with apologies for being late.
As I said elsewhere, it was kind of a different prospect throwing a bit of money at an independent site with 4 regular writers back then, especially as it was one of few places that covered PC stuff well at the time. Giving money to a much more mainsteam site under the umbrella of a megacorp is definitely not the same thing.
I hope you get a front page Eulogy, I can't see one yet. EG didn't and the Editor admits that was a mistake.
I highly doubt it. They should have put up a notice or something on the front page a month ago to give people who don't visit the forum regularly anymore at least a chance to save their old stuff. There were a few things like the Christmas game and such that drew in people who weren't regulars and it kinda sucks that there isn't a good way of letting others know it's moved to Discord (I think that's the plan at least). And there may have been some old timers who don't use the forums but would have wanted to exchange contact info and such before the only way of DM:ing got nuked.
I don't think anyone in the current editorial staff has ever had any interaction with it or shown any interest in the forum whatsoever, so I'd be surprised if it's acknowledged at all.

Alice O did pop in to say goodbye, but that was about it.
I'd have hoped Sin or Graham might have at least said bye bye. Oh well.
PS/ If we still had the forum I'd be able to comment on the fact that the front page of RPS currently has articles by Jim, Mat Cox, Brendy and Mathew Castle... it's all very retro. And I guess Graham, though he never really left. I think some of the first RPS articles I read were about Ace Team games like Zeno Clash.

I think some of the first RPS articles I read were about Ace Team games like Zeno Clash. As I remember the first Zeno Clash was kind of an exclusive for them. The first thing I read, and what got me to come back to the site, was one of Jim's (many) STALKER ramblings. I had never had someone just mirror and articulate my sentiment for a game so perfectly before. New Games Journalism! RPS was also my first real taste of British games writing.

I haven’t been a regular visitor to RPS for a while now, but browsing the site a bit yesterday, I was a bit surprised by the lack of comments. Most articles don‘t even make it to 10. I remember it being a much livelier place, no?
