If you struggle to make porridge appealing without adding a ton of sugar, try dumping your favourite protein powder in there. Filling as fuck and you get your protein in.
Just make sure to stir the powder into the oats BEFORE adding the milk/water

If you're strictly fat loss/cardio it doesn't make a ton of sense - but if you'll permit me a tangent, I personally don't agree that pure fat loss works long term.

It does make sense - protein is an essential macronutrient and most people will eat too little. It doesn't need to be the 1g/lb that bodybuilders suggest but it should still be higher than most people will naturally consume, and the requirements increase as you age. Even if you're not lifting, you want to maintain as much lean mass as possible during a diet to ensure itös primarily fat loss occurring, and eating more protein is essential to that. It also has a higher thermic effect than other macronutrients, is very satiating, and excess protein consumption won't, or will rarely, store as body fat.

It's a protein source in the form of a powder. If you need more protein and struggle to eat more food, you can drink it.

I tried protein shakes recently and put on weight. I probably should have cut down on other food instead of just adding them on top.

The idea was that the protein makes you feel more full so you don't eat as many snacks. I think that did actually work, to an extent.
I read that people who drink them at mealtime lose weight, but people who drink them between meals gain weight.
But I think you still need to pair that with doing exercise and reducing meal size to compensate. Which I didn't.Cos I'm lazy.

Are you sure it wasn't weight gainer? 30g of the protein powder I use is 125kcal. Just checked and 28g is 107 cals. But twice a day that's an additional 220 calories. Basically one extra Mars Bar a day.
Not what you want to be doing if you're trying to *lose* weight.

As you say, you need to combine with exercise. Protein supplements are good for when you're looking to gain muscle but are struggling to consume enough protein through diet alone.

Whatever you do you need to keep roughly within a maintenance calorie range in order to not gain weight, but weight gain and fat gain are not the same. If you can eat normal food, it's definitely the preferred method.

There's nothing wrong with a protein powder if you want one. A protein shake and piece of fruit or something is an ideal snack.
Stay away from MRPs (meal replacement powders) or mass gainers as additional protein drinks though, unless you're actually replacing a meal. They'll contain a lot more carbs and fat in addition.

Your diet should be high in protein for all the reasons Derb mentions.
But adding a protein shake or two every day comes with calories which need to be accounted for if you're trying to maintain a calorie deficit.
Personally if I was primarily focused on dropping fat then I'd pick foods that were high in protein but I probably wouldn't supplement with a shake, hence my warning about adding it to the porridge. I'd be too hungry in my calorie deficit to waste calories on a supplement.

Goddamn I'm trying to cut down on my meat but most proteins seem to be meat, when they're not eggs.

Peanut butter is high in protein if you dont want to fuck around with supplements/cut your meat intake. We get through a fair bit thanks to our local vegetarian.

It’s also high in fat, which sees a fairly large increase in cals.
I eat a lot of kvarg/quark. As long as you can handle the dairy it’s high in protein, moderate carb and low fat. Add a spoon of peanut butter, or PB2 if you want to be calorie conscious, for a general snack, or some fruit for peri-workout.

There are proper diet apps that'll guide you through your required energy balance, such as Carbon, MacroFactor, and RP Diet Coach. They're food trackers but also analyse your weekly rate of loss and tweak your energy input to keep you moving toward your goal. Now that MFP has stuck their barcode scanner behind a paywall the free version is fairly limited, and if you consider paying I'd go straight to one of the above. I meant to reply to this earlier, but forgot. I can still use the barcode scanner in MyFitnessPal and I'm using the free version. (on Android) The barcode scanner and the massive database is the main reason I use that one, because anytime I've tried another one their database didn't include most of the foods I was eating and that meant entering them manually (which is even more of a hassle when the nutrition information is in Japanese ) I wish it would linkup with my MiBand to track my steps though. I think it's possible through google fit or some other 3rd party, but I'm not giving google my health info. They already know way too much about me.

Ban plz. Peanut butter is an S tier foodstuff! But yeah, ridiculously calorie dense stuff when you look into it. If I make a milk and banana smoothie with a generous dollop of the stuff in it and some oats, it comes to almost 1000 calories IIRC. Which is what I want on days that I get some cardio in in fairness, as I've been struggling with keeping weight on since stopping drinking.

Perhaps he tried using it as lube I don't own a hazard suit, so I'm unable to get close enough to the horrible smelling stuff to test out its lubrication properties.

That's obviously what I would assume, but it's not a strong smelling thing and I can't recall actually smelling it. You have to get your nose right in there, surely?
