I think you just need to find something that floats your boat.
I love running /cycling and hitting the gym.
Hated running at school mind. P.E. with enforced cross country running in winter? Fuck that.
Running where i like when i want? Especially in spring/summer/autumn, I'm all over that.

I don't actually like it as much as I just feel like absolute fucking shit if I don't keep active. I'm certain my ancestry could be traced back to some sort of human/sloth genetic crossover.

If space is the issue, try gymnastic rings. I hung gymnastic rings between the joist of my garage. Takes up no space and I only need to move my bicycle out of the way to get started.

After a bit of an intervention from Mrs hedben, I’ve signed up to Slimming World. My weight’s been creeping up since before covid, and lockdown made it much worse because 1) I stopped cycling to work 5 days a week, and 2) I drank a lot of booze.
Anyway, I don’t know how much I trust BMI as a measure of health, but mine’s 33 and I’m not happy with how I look, so I figure I need to do something. I’ve been half-arsing it for about 6 months by reducing carbs, but now that I’m on something much more regimented, that should work.
Having to work out every meal is a bit of a pain, especially as we also have a coeliac, a vegetarian, and a teen with possible disordered eating in the house (so I’m basically having to hide or downplay my weight loss attempt and not change evening meals too much). But I’ve been doing it for nearly a week and I haven’t been hungry or missed the stuff I’ve cut out so far.

Yeah, I've put on shedloads of weight since starting working from home in September. I'm gonna try and join a gym tomorrow morning.

I was in a similar position. When my wife was pregnant with our second child it was a tough pregnancy on her, and I was transferred further away from home.
I had no time for myself and I put on a lot of weight. I have a new job now that I'm mostly from home and I go to the gym most lunchtimes.
I've put on muscle but still have a decent sized spare tyre.
It's really helped my mental health, and obviously my physical. Worth every cent

If you're working from home I'd also try and do 10 pushups or so every hour or something similar. It helps me keep my healthy goals in mind and so am less likely to go searching for biscuits at 11 o clock

That's actually a decent idea. Though I don't think it'll stop me searching for biscuits at 11am.

I do like the idea of regular activity. While I was just trying things out to see what worked, I also tried standing up and moving around while playing videogames. Like a really really mild version of Ring Fit.
Anyway I’m running 3 times a week now and I managed 5.6km in under 40 minutes today, so I imagine that will make more difference than looking like a weirdo in my living room while playing Hitman.

That's great. Keep it up, you'll see the benefits in no time. Once you do it enough that it's a habit, you're golden

Yeah, I've put on shedloads of weight since starting working from home in September. I'm gonna try and join a gym tomorrow morning. Ironically, I've lost nearly a stone and a half since taking a WFH job. I'm also not in the classroom and too knackered to do anything after getting home from a 10 hour day. That may be a factor.

Just realised exactly how fat I am. I hide it fairly well but my gut is pretty much 40 inches now.
I went through a sustained period of drinking 4-5 days a week for like, the best part of a year. I've cut back a lot but yeah, guess it had to go somewhere.
I'm just terrible at making things a habit. Why is keeping fit just such a fucking chore?

Yup. Going shopping for jeans recently was a bit of an eye-opener. Why is putting on 5kg as easy as sitting around doing nothing for a few months, but losing it is a bloody marathon? I had some luck with using MyFitnessPall to track calories. But the problem is that as soon as I stop using it any benefits start to disappear again. Also, anytime I do some exercise it makes me hungry. That's just not fair! Didn't make it to the gym today, but did make it to the biscuits.

It's just a case of making something habit. I really couldn't be arsed with going on lunchtime walks at first, but now I'm clockwatching all morning and raring to get out there.
I've started doing a rotation of press ups and ab crunches before work which isn't quite as appealing, but I'm starting to get out of bed earlier without a fuss now and learning to love that endorphin hit to kick the day off.

MFP is definitely the best way for me. It properly highlights how calorific things are, and if you are adding exercise, just how much exercise is needed to work off the additional biscuits.

There are proper diet apps that'll guide you through your required energy balance, such as Carbon, MacroFactor, and RP Diet Coach.
They're food trackers but also analyse your weekly rate of loss and tweak your energy input to keep you moving toward your goal. Now that MFP has stuck their barcode scanner behind a paywall the free version is fairly limited, and if you consider paying I'd go straight to one of the above.

Weirdly my jeans all still fit.
I've cut down on booze a lot which will help.
I'm not massively sedentary, I cycle to the office 3 times a week, which is about a 35 minutes typinge trip, and have been doing a 10 mile bike ride on the weekend, and go for frequent walks.
I think it's mostly booze. And crisps.

Yeah, I used to cycle to the office and back 5 days a week. Now I don't. My solution would usually be just to not buy any snacks, because if I don't have them in the house I can't eat them. But the missus keeps buying them for the kids. I have started going out for walks many lunchtimes, but I doubt it's burning that many calories. I bought some trainers for the gym! So I'm at least half way there

A mile of brisk walking is about 100 calories, give or take. It's good for getting active and getting your heart rate and blood flow up, but it's a pretty low impact exercise just for calorie burning. That isn't to say you shouldn't do it, but it's more of a complimentary exercise than a pure weight loss one.
I did a six mile walk yesterday morning with the hound and my Garmin measured it as 559 kcal.

Pre lockdown I would go walk back from the office everyday, and often walk in too. This was an hour walk.
I'm going to try and avoid snacks.
Think I'll start doing some basic calisthenics in the morning and evening again. Basic-bitch stuff like press ups, squats and crunches, but not sure I can do anything more advanced without causing injury (which is what happened last time I tried, ended up pulling a muscle or tendon, or something, that took a couple of weeks to stop hurting, and basically ruined the streak I had going on).
Could do with a dog. I'd definitely be happy to walk a dog. Unfortunately I'm lodging in somebody else's house so not able to get a dog. And even if I weren't, I'm not sure I'd be able to be around enough for it.
Maybe I could get one of those wooden pull along ones.

But you do need to be walking a couple of hours to be worth it. As ever though, 90% is diet.

I went for a run with my dog last week and she just wanted to stop and sniff everything, it was really annoying. It might work if she was off the lead, but there’s nowhere local I’d be fully comfortable with that.

Haha, yeah. We dog sit every now and again and the last walk with him took 2 hours for something I could've done in almost half that on my own. Dogs are great and I'm still mulling over the idea of getting one, but not all of them are good exercise companions.

7-10k steps a day consistently, ideally outside, is a big benefit for a number of reasons. You don't need hours for it to be worthwhile. Even taking 10 minutes walks after meals will help with nutrient partitioning processes and aid with digestion.

It might actually be better for me if I ditch the bike and walk to work instead 🤔

Probably, the bike is super efficient from an energy expense perspective so a walk is probably more impactful.
I know myself the walk to work is 25 mins which is a really nice brisk pace that I'll feel. If I bike, it's the easiest 5 minute cycle in the world and the exercise impact is minimal (the journey home is a little more difficult but not much)
