I consider it a mature hairline. A slippery slope, my friend. I have a lot of minoxidil I can sell you at a knock down price

Yep, I'm 39 and thinning very badly on top, it's going quick. I've got a few old friends I haven't seen for 2+ years due to covid and I'm kinda dreading meeting up with them because of the grief I know I will get! And I dread looking at photos now, even just over a year or so ago it wasn't awful, but now it's very obvious from pretty much any angle, and I've got dark hair which makes it worse. I wouldn't mind so much if I could grow a decent beard, but the best I can do is a goatee, it's too patchy around the jawline for a full beard. So my only other option now is to lose more weight and start putting muscle on and shave my head, then at least I won't be a fat bald guy. I think bald / shaved looks cool if you're fit / toned. I'm currently going with the shaved head and beard look and this was indeed at the back of my mind when I decided to get in better shape. Similar story to you it got to the point where I realised that in EVERY photo the bald spot was massively visible and it was no longer just the odd unfortunate angle/lighting/generic excuse. Although this happened to me 10 years earlier than you. I've got black hair that is, ironically, extremely thick where it survives so it looked particularly bad. Shaving it off is one of the best decisions I ever made, there's a real "problem solved" feeling to it and it looks so much better. I generally shave it to the skin once a week and let it grow back to stubble. It does seem like it snowballs and gets to the point where it goes fast. It's interesting now watching this play out amongst my other follicley challenged friends. I've got one who is going really thin and receding but insists his hair hasn't changed since he was 18.

I do pay for a haircut sometimes even though I'm on my 4th set of clippers, the Turkish barbers get the flames out to kill all your ear hair. Just had this at a (new) barbers today. The ear thing caught me completely by surprise.

Anyone dabbled in Finasteride (Propecia) by any chance? Or know anyone who has?

Too much estrogen production for my liking.
You get some fluff but begin the transitioning process in return.

Not bald, but what hair I do have is turning grey at a really alarming rate now. I've been cutting my own hair for almost two years now and the next cut will be pretty damn short.

I was banking on being a silver fox later on in life, but my genes have other ideas. Still have a head of hair but thinning rapidly with far too big a bald spot at my crown. I think it is almost time to face the truth and shave it.

I'm getting the greys too, particularly around the sides- give it a few years and I'll have a full Paulie Walnuts going on.

I thought I had white paint on my hair a couple of weeks ago when I was painting a cupboard under the stairs at first. It was only when it failed to wash out that I realised just what it was. Up until now its been just the sides, now its all over the place. That was surprisingly upsetting to see.

I'm 38, still have a fairly thick head of hair. I think it's genetic, my dads hair only started to thin out in his late fifties.
I used to shave my head every few months, and if I do start to go bald I'll embrace it. But my hair grew quite long during the plague years, and I think I'm going to keep it whilst I can. So I now have an undercut and topknot. I think the end result has landed somewhere between "early mid-life crisis" and "tragic hare krishna".

Quick tips:
1. Don't decide to trim your hair when tired 2. Double check the colour of the blade guard you're using... Light purple is not the same size as dark purple. Not by a long way. 3. Don't start with a confident sweep of the clippers from the front of your forehead to the back, (we're talking Phil Oakey) as there's no hiding that.
I'm now sporting my shortest haircut ever (number 2 all over). I can much more clearly see where I'm thinning and the grey bits are great as the look invisible against the skin.
I'm off to join the marines.
Thank God I'm still working from home.

Grade 2 is much worse for showing up your bald bits than grade 1 or to the skin

Anyone dabbled in Finasteride (Propecia) by any chance? Or know anyone who has? Yeah, I use Finasteride. It has stopped my thinning and I haven't had any ill effects. Not crazy about the idea of having to take it forever though. I suppose at some point I'll have to accept my youth is long gone.

39, receding, plus bald patch. I ask the hairdresser and girlfriend every time whether it's time to take it all off or not, and at some point soon they're going to say yes. I'm already getting it cut shorter than I used to, but I don't really want to start shaving it until I have to...

A little bit of regrowth at the back, I had a noticeable bald spot forming but that has recovered somewhat. Nothing around the temples but it's stopped receding there as far as I can tell. I've never been particularly slim but I don't think the moobs are any worse than before.

Anyone dabbled in Finasteride (Propecia) by any chance? Or know anyone who has? It really works, I started balding in my late 20s and was back to my teen levels of hair after a year of use. Had to stop for cash reasons (couldn't spare £30 a month at the time) about 5 years later and my hair just fucked right off again. No issues with boobs (my own or others), a random vag sprouting from my appendix scar or any other unmanly symptoms at all.

You started taking it at exactly the right time, really. It's far less effective later in life.
For what it's worth, by the time you're over 40 the average man's testosterone levels are similar to a prepubertal child's, so if you're worried that it's somehow going to affect your big-balled alpha-ness with estrogen, soyboy tendencies, that ship has probably long since sailed.

No, but I've started to get a few greys. Where a year or two I might have said "no, but I have a single grey hair" or "two grey hairs," now have I have four, and about six in my beard and I am stressed.
By this time next year, I'll be salt and pepper.

This thread convinced me to do it. I had my head shaved to a grade 1 on Friday afternoon. I'm feeling far less self conscious about it than I thought I would.

I've had to go on conference calls this mornign already with my grade 2 all over. How people have laughed... at least it cheered them up on a rainy as hell Monday morning.

One of the big shocks for me over lockdown was when I let my dark manly beard grow out for a few days only to discover that it was at least 40% grey. It got shaved again.

Ha FWIW I had the exact same mentality but nobody said a thing, even when I earnestly asked their opinion. Eventually shaved it off on my own then got nothing but compliments.

I can't say going grey is a concern for me, kinda think it's cool. Yep agreed, no concern here either and I'm going pretty rapidly. I also let my stubble grow out much more these days purely because it has some cool grey flecks.
