One of our cats had that. Can't tell you what it is (but I don't think it's life threatening). Quite irritable though as his head would go all twitchy if you messed with it. But that might have just been because he was a weird cat

Anyone else had struggles with a reactive dog?
Not just with other dogs, but visitors etc. We currently have a visitor and he's been flipping out...

First you need to build up the "place" command, so going to their bed, pillow, blanket, whatever; and staying there until you release them.
Then, when people come over, tell them (the dog, not the visitors) to go to their place and they are then ignored completely (not even looked at), also instruct the visitors to do the same. They will bark, whine etc., but only correct then when they leave their place (and send them back of course).
When the dog has been quiet for 5-10 minutes, release them and again the dog gets ignored until they have been quiet for 5-10 minutes.
EDIT: sending them to their place also calms down reactive dogs, you can do this multiple times a day, even for 1-2 hours. Also don't really interact with the dog then, no petting etc. They need to learn that nothing exciting will happen there anyway so they might as well sleep. It is also their safe haven where they won't be bothered if they want to be left alone.

Thanks oz, will try that in this case as we've been teaching him place, but not for that purpose so we hadn't been increasing the duration.
We've gone to the vet a few times about it already and she's tried a pain trial (basically giving him metacam for a few weeks) which seems to have had some effect. So it seems like he's in some kind of pain but she hasn't been able to diagnose it which is kind of frustrating when we're paying £50+ a pop.

Our dog fucking hates anyone else daring to set foot inside his house and just goes mental. He calms down eventually but doesn’t take much to set him off again whilst they’re here. I prefer to just sling him upstairs until he calms down now. Can’t be bothered with the incredibly noisy faff.

Yeah if she moves it sets him off again. God. One thing I'm trying is having a training line on him and using that to move him away if he gets uppity.
Well our visitor is here for over a week so he's going to have to get used to it.

Age is a massive factor here too. Bobby used to do the same at mum's, would be very possessive and would try to get one up on the youngest visitor (usually my great-nieces). There were no consequences for growling at them etc. Since he's been here, he's much calmer woth visitors (which I put down to age) and has some proper discipline. We've taught him place mostly to try and calm him down when he smells the cats and that works to a degree.

I hope so, he's nearly 2 so I'm hoping a lot of it is down to adolescence.
But at the same time my friend who's a trainer with Guide Dogs says that the majority of reactivity is because they're in some form of pain which has been undiagnosed. We're thinking there's a bit of clicking in his back legs/hip area, but the vet hasn't been able to feel it much when she examined him. We're due another appointment in a few weeks time to feedback on the metacam trial so hopefully she'll examine him more thoroughly.

Worth a trip to a dog osteopath instead of/as well as the vet? TBF I didn't know they were a thing until a mate trained to be one, but he now sees more pets than people.

Lost our she cat Una of 17 years yesterday. Her condition had faltered last few weeks. Given she’d had breathing issues since birth she was a hardy little warrior (would meow but with no sound, and when drinking sounded like she was drowning bless her).
She’d been acting strangely the last few weeks and was eating less and less and lost noticeable weight. When we got home yesterday she came in and collapsed on us and was wheezing heavily with no interest in food. Got her down the vets and test showed she had significant blood in her abdomen and internal issues. Given her age kindest thing was to send her to sleep, we were certainly not going to put her through an operation when she would still be very much up against it.
Our other cat Leo we lost for nearly 2 weeks a couple of months ago but he then came back thin but very needy so must have been locked in a garage etc during a neighbours holiday. He endured rather than liked Una so sure he won’t be minding the less competition for treats but sure he will miss her warmth on the cold winter nights.
RIP Una pleased you had a long comfy life with us.

Sorry to read that, but 17 is a fair old age for a moggie, so she was obviously loved & spoilt rotten by you all.
Not that that will make it feel any easier for you. 😢

Seems to have enjoyed it! She did! We got a foot of snow, so in the park, she was only able to jump from spot to spot like a deer 😄 Her legs were packed with snow clumps after a while, was barely able to get the harness off:
