Greetings!
Fucking appalling that no-one has made this yet. We got a tiny parrot this week so I guess I can start proceedings. Please bear with me as I fight with the embed image function over my following posts.

We've got two kittens coming in a couple of weeks, and I'm now in charge of kitten-proofing the house. When we got our first cat we were in a smaller place with less stuff and no kids paraphernalia scattered about- I don't remember worrying about the house being a potential death trap.
Looks like cables and disguarded Lego will be the first challenge. Any tips gratefully received!

Tips:
Kiss goodbye to anything that you hold dear and which could be a handy scratch post. My leather sofa didn't last too long.
If you close doors on them, kiss goodbye to the carpets nearby as they try and burrow under.
Get scratch posts (see above). At least one should be tall.
Lily's and other cut flowers can be poisonous.
They like pouncing on moving things... Including things moving on TV.
They love climbing and having high perches which make them feel safe.
Water food and litter should be in separate places.
Switch food slowly if you do as they take time to get used to it.
Make sure they always have fresh water. We've got a water fountain that one of ours loves.
Remember whatever your children might have said, those cats and the jobs involved with them are yours.
Zooplus is a good source of pet supplies.
Felix and Whiskas are not great foods, but once your cat tries them, everything else will be ignored. Butcher's is far far better for instance.
They can be picky with their litter, ideally use whatever they were used to at first.
Play with them daily and groom them.
Take lots of pictures and enjoy. 🙂

Thanks Witchking, that's a pretty comprehensive list! Its going to be a significant change of pace as we've only ever had one cat before and he was a lazy lump. I'm now trying to think like a kitten and the scope for carnage is... significant.
Interesting comment on whiskas/felix, have you had issues with them?

They're poor, nutritionally, but they stuff enough additives in there to make cats crave it. I feed mine purina kibble with the odd pouch of sheba or some tuna as a treat

I have the dog sitter visiting for the first acclimatisation visit with Wellington - just in case I have to spend any days in the office.

I'm always in favour of an excuse to post kitten pictures. Here are our two. Nozomi: and Podrick: We're getting our first dog in a few months, a Shiba Inu puppy called Kernow. That will be fun.

Yeah, avoid all those brands like the plague - they are essentially fast food for cats. Look for food with high meat content and no/less grain. We settled on the Wellness Core range, but others like Wainwrights, James Wellbeloved etc also seem good

When we got our boy at 9 months old he was on a diet of Felix and dear god his farts could clear rooms... Absolutely fucking vile!
They're on James Wellbeloved indoor kibble and Purina one indoor and I can't remember the last time I smelt a pump.

Our boy Saus... Allegedly half Bengal (he certainly got the lankiness and vocal traits anyway) Our girl Luna - might look sweet and innocent but she's a little bitch (still love her to bits of course!)

Better food or poisonous farts- got it! Depending on them being indoor/outdoor cats it makes a big difference not just to their general nutrition but how much their litter box will smell. Get them on anything resembling a raw diet and their shit won't stink.

Oh yeah and also wet food is better than dry food as cats get most of their liquid from wet. People tend to say the worst wet food is better than the best dry food. My cats disagree...
We got two kittens and they were a lot of fun and still are five years later.
First couple of days you should have them in one or two rooms only so they get used to the place and feel safe. They will sleep a lot.
Oh and food wise, it's mostly because of low protein and high grain / carbohydrates in the crap ones. Cats can't digest grains so end up stinking.
We took ours to a cattery once though and they were fed Felix and they were hooked. We've tried weaning then off and they just go on hunger strike. I've tried everything and they just ignore it.

Zomoniac, those are impressive cats! One of ours is a long hair (or semi long, not really sure as she's still tiny), we'd always said we'd stick with short hair to avoid the grooming but my wife fell in love so all prior discussions went out the window. Add grooming to the list of new jobs we've lined up for ourselves... The other is a bog standard tabby mongrel.

Our two are "part" Maine Coon, which means they have turned out huge. They're twice the size at least of a normal cat and can stretch from one side of a king size bed to another.
One (who looks just like Goose from Captain Marvel) acts like a dog and follows us everywhere. The other remembers he's a cat and treats us with the contempt we deserve.

Too late to edit that post then I guess... 😉
They're not quite that big. The amount one of them tries to eat though he would be as wide as a car if we'd let him.

I miss my girls. The ex took them because she's a bitch (there's a lot to this and it dragged on for months but that's the summary). They are also Maine Coons, and I'm currently on a wait list (over a year now) for a boy from a local breeder.

The long haired one hates being groomed, but whenever she gives herself a bath she manages to give herself massive mattes. We have to pin her down and use clippers to remove chunks periodically. On the plus side she doesn't moult much, unlike Pod. Even though he has lovely short velvet fur most of it ends up on any surface he goes near.

Ours are on the obligatory Whiskas, I think we went through probably half a dozen other brands in the first few years but we think one of the neighbours was feeding them Whiskas anyway all along so it was a lost cause but they do get a handful of James Wellbeloved fish biscuits everyday which seems to keep their coats really shiny/smooth and they love that too, we seem to get through a 10kg bag of that about every 18 months.

Got me to register after much lurking on EG forums over the years. Can someone tell me how to post pics of my beautiful cats? Can't seem to upload directly from my mac, do I need a photo hosting account?
