Thanks all, sounds like I'm not alone.
Worst case and we run out of cover/money I'll just sell the house and move in with the in-laws!

Fwiw, my mum never insured Bobby, as she was outraged at the "service" she got with her previous dog (essentially the excess). So she was paying into an account every month to cover anything. Not been needed yet thankfully...
Our cats' insurance is a tenner each at the moment. Haven't bother d claiming as anything we've had to take them for has been under a £100 so seemed pointless

I'm too mean to pay insurance for a cat. If it's in pain /suffering then /draws a finger across throat while grimacing.
Obviously, i am not a total monster and we paid through the nose for the last cat and all the hyperthyroidism meds for years until kitty cancer came a calling.

Our lovely little girl is one year old today. Can't believe it. Couldn't imagine life without her now. She's amazing.

Just remembered, did my good deed for the day. Dropped my daughter off at school with the dog and carried on with our usual walk in some nearby woods that some houses back on to. As I walked down the path towards the woods, a poodle cross shot past me. Thought nothing of it until an owner didn't follow soon after. Managed to grab them in the woods and call the number on the tag...as luck would have it, I was stood right outside the owner's house at the back...the dog had escaped through a broken fence that was being repaired today!

So we have two cats, approx 9 year old sisters, both very happy fellows by and large though not always with each other, seeing as a dog's sadly out due to the potential financial burden, we've been toying with getting another two cats for a few years and two from the same litter have come up as available from someone we know, of course we could end with two dud cats who might be in and out of the vets but IME cats seem to be generally healthier than dogs but I think Mrs and Mercury and I are more concerned about upsetting the balance of our exist cats, any thoughts?

Yes, they might be in and out of the vets. It's always a possibility with pets.

Going to suggest that the cost - of food and vets - of two cats is likely similar to one medium size dog, so if you're worried about the financial burden of a dog I'd caution against thinking two more cats would be cheaper.
On general health/costs, of our last 4 cats, one is still with us (the pacifist pictured above), his brother (ginger unit who featured in a few pics here) died of lymphoma last year aged 6, after about £2500 of chemo. Still fucking devastated by that one. We had one who was healthy most of his life, kidney failure took him a bit too early (13 yrs) after about £1500 of treatment at the end. And another was healthy throughout but didn't know her green cross code, with predictable results.

You definitely roll the dice a bit. None of the cats that my family have had have had any issues (bar similar lack of road sense: rolled off a kerb whilst sun bathing; and a run in with a fox with equally predictable results). But one dog broke his leg and then died after eating rat poison, and another had all his fur fall out after another dog was introduced into the family. After 2 years of creams, ointments, pills, visits to the Royal College of Vets etc and thousands of pounds, my dad put a stop to all that. He lived another 9 or 10 years, happy as Larry. Smelly, but happy.

Sure I get it's a roll of the dice, as for feeding we're about £10/week for the two we have so that is doable, it's more the potential vets bills I'm worried about with regards to a dog, there is also the whole Dad will be doing all of the morning/evening ablutions and majority of walks despite what the rest of the family says not that I'd mind the walks though with our current family dynamic that wouldn't always be easy, we've both had cats, me for twenty odd years the missus all her life. It's really the prospect of introducing two kittens to the others we're worried about.

On that point, our limited experience was that older cat was an absolute sweetheart when introduced to two kittens. Became very protective and parental. After they grew big enough they all settled into a truce, occasionally uneasy, occasionally friendly. So long as house is big enough for them all to escape to find a bit of peaceful alone time I think you're good.

Yes now we've moved we have a bit more space and space the cats can escape to, in the hot weather we've only seen them for maybe half an hour or so per day though they leave a trail of corpses in their wake, they love it here.

Little one went to get Spayed and for the 2nd time only for them to be unable to do it.
First time she was having a phantom pregnancy then had a season earlier this year so had to wait till July.
This time, took her for her pre op checkup and they said she was releasing some milk. So they gave her some medication for 6 days. Pretty much killed her appetite the entire time. Took her back last week and got told everything was good to go. Took her in, left her then about 3 hours later get a call to say she's releasing milk again so they can't do it.
Went to pick her up the receptionist who's a miserable fucker anyways straight away wanted me to pay £69 for more medicine and tried blaming us for not keeping her on the medicine. Had to point out the fact we got told everything was good and no mention of more medicine ever came up but she kept trying to claim it was our fault. Kept going back and forth between the reception area and the room out back rather than just let me speak to the vet which also annoyed me.
Had to remind her again no mention from them of keeping her on medicine and the fact that for her first check up the vet didn't even know about her first failed op or anything else that had happened since then(her needing surgery on her tongue when she sliced it on a broken stick) because none of them thought to add any of it to her file so they are looking pretty useless.
Safe to say now the prefect time to move her to the same vet as the other dog. Dogs had a shit day and now being super clingy.

Fuck me. Shit vet. Why do you even have two different ones? She's from my sisters dogs litter and that's the vets she took them to. Been meaning to change her over for a while but thanks to covid it was still hard to get the other dog in for her 6 month checkups until the end of last year.

That area is the coolest part in the house so I'm not surprised she likes it. The other prefers to sleep on the stairs which is also pretty cool. Bought them one of those cooling mats but they aren't too impressed by it.

Sad news, my 17 year old girl Lola was put to sleep last night. Mentioned her in here before as she had an incident with bleeding into her eyes that eventually caused blindness. These incidents have continued sparodically but became more frequent recently. Two nights ago she had another into her severely damaged eye and last night it seemingly ruptured. Rushed to emergency vet with the only option to end her suffering.
