Other half rang the vet - vet explained if he had one tick there's a chance he may have more so just to give him a good feel up and remove any more we find (if any). Said to just keep an eye for symptoms (lethargy, lameness, loss of appetite) over the next few days and get in touch if we notice anything.
Also sold her a Bravecto 3 month treatment tablet for 50-odd quid which is fucking extortionate considering you can grab them for 20-odd quid online. Told her to cancel it and we'll order online but "that's too much of a hassle now" apparently. May be an argument later about who's paying for that.
Dogs eh?

Might be easier to sign up to their Healthy Pet Club or whatever it's called. £15ish a month, flea/worm/tick treatment and covers annual check up and jabs. Don't forget that £50 would have included a fee for prescribing too. You always need that, even if buying online, so prob wouldn't save loads.

We already pay 60-odd quid a month for his insurance - I'm hoping it covers some of that stuff (I really need to look at it properly) as I'm not particularly a high earner and we already have to pay out of pocket for his hydrotherapy.
I mean, of course we'll pay it if needed - just hoping!

Yeah we just do the pets at home plan. Same. Seems to do the job. Although trying to get her to eat the fucking huge worm tablet that we get as well is a mission. Even if I ground it down and mix it with food half the time she's like "nah, I'm not stupid".

The way to look at it is you've called, been put at ease, and you know that you're getting three months of something that will help your little furry friend. You can look elsewhere in the meantime and get something else after the 3 months is up but now you've got a bit of peace of mind knowing you've done the right thing by him. Yes, the cost is always a factor, but now you're better equipped for any more potential little beasties. Ticks are scary as fuck. So small, yet potentially so harmful. You've done the right thing, and that's the main thing.

The Pets At Home flea stuff stopped working on one of our cats so had to go with the uber strength stuff from the vets.
Speaking of the ginger ninjas, one got in a scrap and seemed to get a bite. That wound seems fine but he's over-groomed near it and made it sore (and bald). We've been keeping it clean but it's not getting any better. So that's another trip to the vet I guess.

They said it's supposed to taste good to dogs but he's such a fussy eater.

We switched our cats to bravecto after a particularly nasty flea infestation when we moved house. It's good stuff, and every 3 months is a relief considering how much our two hate "wet neck" time.
But yeah, it's pricey AF.

What's the advantage of spot on treatments compared to a pill?

Making sure they actually get treated!
Although this cat we have is daft enough to actually take the tablets if given crushed up with tuna.
The first cat that can't spot them.
Just as well, as she's also the first cat that goes absolutely radge when you try the spot on drops!

Our vets gave our 2 spot on worming, as opposed to a pill. 3 whole vials each! Wish us luck...

Our cats just hide when it's spot time. As soon as they see us coming with it, they're gone. It's a monthly game of Spy vs. Spy. Only, they have a massive advantage*.
Major, predictably, couldn't give a toss.
Pate for pills, ime.

Ours leg it out of the room if you open a packet of something that even sounds vaguely familiar. Have to shut them in the kitchen before bringing out the meds.

That was the (inadvertent) upside to switching our flea treatment to one that covers ticks, it's not spot on any more. That stuff brought out the snarls and biting, full on terrier mode. Thankfully now it's pills, so it's just a case of wrapping it in something nice.

A tick just fell off my Bernese - is it worth calling the vet and having him checked to be on the safe side? I'm struggling to find where on his body the tick was under all the fur so I can disinfect it (but I'll keep looking). Beyond pissed off with my other half - told her not to walk him in tall grass but apparently "ticks only live in rural areas". Ticks are everywhere tbf, I've had to remove a few after walks in dry short grass of London parks

So had a grass snake (still alive but end of tail bitten off) and a bird waiting for us today when we got up. Daphne's been on a rampage.

re spot on treatments, we've some success keeping an ampule down the side of the sofa when it's time, waiting for One Ton Tabby to settle on lap, and sneakily apply it when he's well settled and asleep
@freddie you have my sympathy, had a run of relative pacifist cats of late but still traumatised by rat bastard psycho cat teaching me just how many entrails are usually on the inside of a fucking seagull

I've thought about getting her a bell but I had a flea collar (with a bell and an escape elastic) on my first cat about 20 years ago and she went missing for about 3 days and then turned up in a right state, minus her collar and wouldn't leave my side for a few weeks, peculiarly about a week after she turned up I found her collar in the gutter. Obviously I will never know what happened but it's made me very apprehensive about cats wearing collars.

A seagull is quite the catch, I shall shame my cat with that anecdote, bloody snakes and mice and birds she's an embarrassment, we have seagulls a plenty down here, that would be an impressive.

freddiemercurystwin - flea collars are pretty nasty things and usually cause hair loss/skin damage. Ours have silicone collars with bells on (kittyrama brand IIRC) and they do the job nicely. Quick release clasp that a cat can break out if they get stuck, which is a big fear for us too.

Dogs are just amazing. So intuitive. Had to drop some stuff off from my mum's with the emergency care button people and was in the vicinity whilst my daughter was swimming. So brought Bob along, we had a nice walk there and back. I was a bit upset which he instantly got and is now sat at my feet in the sun while we wait for the rest of the family. Won't leave me alone. It's a great comfort.
