It's a hard road. My wife's family had a cocker spaniel growing up. He had to be put down at aged 6 due to cancer and even now, over 30 years later, the mother-in-law won't get another dog as she's still so cut up about it. Despite the fact that they both really need one to get them out of the house.

My mum had a pug, Maggie, that she loved. She reached her end coming on ten years ago now. She’s never replaced her, despite, now coming on 83 tomorrow and living by herself for the last 17 years since dad died, really needing a dug

My dad wouldn't get any new pets after ours died because he doesn't want them out live him. It is something you have to think about

Yeah, my mum made us promise that we'd take in her dog if she karked it. She's 84 and has had a cavapoo for the last 5 years. Such good company for her (dog flap has been a revelation since she's been housebound).

A week today since our new cat moved in, and he's made great progress and is now happily roaming the whole house. Unfortunately he's done a couple of wees in less than ideal spots (my desk, dining table). Hopefully it's just the initial stress and huge change at once but hoping an extra litter tray so he's got one on each floor might help. He's pooing in the right place so definitely hasn't lost the tray.

We apparently had our first 'present' from the new mog today while we were at work. She's only been getting out for a week.
Our lad phoned asking what to do because she had brought a mouse back & was playing with it in the garden.
It eventually escaped, but must have been fairly traumatised. A bit like our boy was, although i imagine he was slightly less chewed!

My previous cat brought a mouse into the living room, poor little thing clearly no longer had use of its back legs as I arrived and scolded my cat, then it scarpered with is front claws under the TV bench, never to be seen again ....

She has settled in very well, we've had a few guests pop by (including squealing friends of my daughter) and the cat has handled it very well. She is very affectionate for a rescue cat. Not counting my chickens yet, but so far so good.

No point scolding it, it is what cats do. Lyra is bringing in 2 a day on average at the moment. One of the bastards bit me yesterday as I was trying to rescue it!

Got rid of an old sofa last week. Knew we'd had a mouse a while back that we hadn't caught and the cats were totally uninterested in. Discovered he'd made a lovely nest in the innards of the sofa. Had munched on all sorts. No evidence of him, so he either escaped or was caught in the end but I am glad he had a bit of relative luxury. (this is also one of the reasons our cats are shut in the kitchen, at least their night time captures are contained, should they escape/cats get bored of them.)

I'm pretty glad mine is a housecat, but on the other hand she is utterly uninterested when a bug needs murdering

It's more frustrating when they bring one in, drop it at your feet and go all "look what I've brought you" and then ignore it as it scampers off. Useless fucks.

Dud went out on his first trip with a walker and other dogs. He's such a social dog we thought we'd try and help him get some regular friends. Well thankfully he made a really good one! Apparently they were inseparable for the whole walk

Was looking after neighbor’s puppy for a while last night. Having my ankles ate, my flip flops chewed on and having to constantly pry whichever of my daughter’s stuffies had been last pillaged has greatly tempered my desire for a new dog
While my home is still achingly quiet and devoid of other mammalian presence, (kid has two bearded dragons which are mostly barely distinguishable from the inanimate objects in their tanks) I’ve enough on my plate to want to add a fucking puppy into the mix.

Aye. Best to give it some time, you'll know when it's right as cheesy as that sounds. Hope you're doing OK now mate.
We keep flip flopping with the idea of getting a dog whenever we look after a friend's golden doodle. He's great fun to have around, but fuck me is he needy compared to the two cats...

All dogs are needy. Puppies are super hard work though and it's really easy to forget that when you're even a little way away from puppy phase.
We've been talking about a 2nd one recently and apart from the cost, the puppy phase is what's mostly putting us off. And we had a super easy one with Maj, too. He was basically a bit stubborn and that's it. No chewing, no pissing in the house.
He did take himself off to the local woods once, though.

I'd rather they did a poo on the bed than to go missing

There are plenty of adult dogs who need homes, it’s not a choice between puppy or nothing.

Yeah, as previously discussed, we'll be automatically turned down by all the adoption places here and I'm not bringing a street dog from abroad into a house with cats.
I understand the adoption argument but it isn't a one size fits all solution.

Adopting a well behaved adult dog is definitely much easier. We got a puppy because we felt the cats made it a necessity. I wouldn't ever get another puppy.

Lots won't re-home with cats/kids/working owners etc. Which is fair enough really

Yeah, that basically.
We already have a full ish house and they're incredibly wary of that (understandably).
We tried... Lots.

Sat in vets, had some bad news about one of mine as she won't be getting any better.
Absolutely heartbroken.
She was a gift from my mum just before she died and one the last things I have to remember her by.
I'm crushed
