I'm kinda glad I didn't go the route of converting Gold to Ultimate and just went with waiting for a cheap sale on Ultimate monthly codes. Now, I am perpetually at the 3 year max and just fill up at the next sale again. I know I would feel the same about paying higher prices and just nope myself out of what is basically the best deal in gaming currently.

I was trying to figure the maths out a couple of months back, and came to the conclusion that it's cheaper to stack 6-month codes, instead of the 12-month code, as apparently you get a free month from MS every time you put in a code and then sign up for recurring billing (which you can then turn off). So theoretically 5x6 month codes will give you 35 months in total, plus the month from Ultimate when you convert it all. Currently a 6-month code is £20 from CDKeys - so you could get 3 years for £101 (with the £1 Ultimate offer). I can't confirm if the above will work as I haven't tried it (will do so when I signed up to Gamepass again), but it might be worth looking into for those that want 3 years for the cheapest possible price. After going over all the details myself, you're spot on... in theory, this is by far the cheapest way to get 3 years of Game Pass Ultimate. I decided against using this method in the end because, in practice, I could see something going wrong with the free months linked to recurring billing, and I just wanted to get the maximum 3 years and forget about it. I ended up outright cancelling my £1 GP Ultimate trial (which felt a bit crazy at first) but surprisingly Microsoft actually refunded me the £1, despite being 5 or 6 days into the trial. I then bought 3 x 12 month Gold subscriptions from CDKeys and a 7 day Ultimate subscription from Eneba and it worked perfectly. 3 years Game Pass for ~£120. Big thanks to all the forumites for their sage advice on this one.

Am I only person who just pays the subscription, but with the odd free month courtesy of redeemed points? :-) I just pay the subscription because I only have a PC and all these different tiers and benefits are weird and confusing. I'm just here for the games, man.

One day this thread will be about the amazing games available on GamePass. But this is not that day.

You are correct. This is the day that I rage because I can't use my Steam controller for games installed via the xbox app because all the exes are fucking encrypted and I can't run them through Steam for the controller configuration to work. Stellar job, Microsoft.

Wait until and installation fails without completing and you realise you can’t get the storage back! Using GamePass on PC is like rolling two dice every time you startup and praying you don’t get snake eyes. I’m genuinely surprised there haven’t been class action lawsuits in the states. It’s just awful.

I don't begrudge the cost at all - for me the big advantage is playing games thjat interest me, but not quite enough to shell out for.

I'm going to see how I get on with just Game Pass and buy no other games. Because I skipped the Xbox One there's loads of games on GP which will easily take me through next year, and there's even old games like TES Oblivion, which I never played.
So far, the only game I want to play that isn't on GP is Mass Effect Legendary Ed, which a mate is kindly lending to me.
Then there's Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite releasing before Xmas, which I'll also get free on GP, along with any other MS first-party releases next year, such as Starfield.
Of course games could be removed from GP, which would scupper my plans a bit. In fact, on that note, how much notice do you get for games being removed from GP? Just a month? I don't want to invest, say, 30 hours in Oblivion just for it to disappear.

Mass Effect LE will inevitably turn up on EA access next year, which is a part of GPU, so no need to rush through that now imo, you might as well catch up on stuff you haven't played instead.
Oblivion won't disappear any time soon seeing as MS own Bethesda now, so no need to worry about that one. In general it's a few week's notice.

darkling Oblivion is highly unlikely to disappear being owned by Microsoft, and as far as I'm aware with the exception of licensing issues (Forza is a prime example) MS owned games don't leave once they're on there. Everything else, you'll usually get somewhere between 14 and 30 days notice. There's a leaving soon section which is updated fairly regularly and TrueAchievements tend to post an article every time it is.

Apparently the icon of the games change when they're leaving soon too. I'm just installing Night in the Woods to check.

Yeah I noticed the "leaving soon" section, but I just didn't know how far in advance games were added to this section. It'd be nice if it notified you 2 months prior of any of your installed / play later games leaving GP.
I assumed MS first-party would always be on there, and I suspected Bethesda games might be the same.
The Xbox 360 versions of the Mass Effect games are on GP, so I wasn't sure if Legendary edition would also turn up.
I should probably focus on games like Doom Eternal, Ori 1&2, Alien Isolation, and Dirt 5 then. So many games, I don't know where to start frankly.

The thing they want is you to fork out the cash to buy it if it leaves and you liked and need to finish something.

Quick question, I downloaded the 360 game "Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter" because I wanted to try out the backwards compatibility and also have fond memories of this game.
I was left really impressed. The graphics are sharp and clean with great anti-aliasing. I assume the back compat games are upscaled somehow?
Are all backwards compat games like this? I may have to check out and replay a few more if this is the case.

Both consoles should apply extra antistropic filtering to 360 games and add Vsync and a locked framerate to games that needed it (a lot of 360 games had terrible tearing). Both Series X and S support a 60fps framerate boost option and an auto-hdr on SOME older games. The Series X only will run a decent selection of 360 games with the "Xbox one X" patched version, usually meaning they are hacked to run at 4k. Advanced Warfighter on 360 had an unlocked framerate so on a new console should be running at a locked 60fps compared to like 28fps when it launched.

Ok, cool. I have a Series X, got it about 2 weeks ago.
Advanced Warfighter was indeed running at a locked 60fps as far as my eye could tell and I could immediately tell it was high resolution as the visuals were crisp and without jagged edges.
This is interesting. Makes me definately want to revisit some older games and see if they also have these improvements.

Surprised it took so long... It's an entertaining enough campaign in fairness.

Finally my patience has paid off. Every time this was half price in a sale I'd go off and look at some videos and umm and ahh about it and eventually decide I can wait. That's this weekend sorted, and as an added bonus one of our daughters is visiting for a few days so that will keep Mrs Hermit occupied and off my case about playing games all day.
Edit:
Currently downloading via the Xbox mobile app, it's quite handy that you can download games you don't own in advance of purchasing them (or getting them through GP in this case).

Thanks for this list. I will definitely take my time to go through this and then revisit some of my old favourites.

the avengers game will make some happy but I played the beta and it was full of shitty repetitive missions once you get past the story missions

Just played through A Way Out with a mate, and loved it. Really wish there wereore games like this, i.e. story driven co-op.

Also the windows store has habit of breaking and you can't install games. There is help threads on the MS site from years back and it still happens. Got it to work by deleting all the app store data

I install all game pass stuff on C drive and had nowhere near as many issues, heard the opposite as well so it's all a mess.

Marvel’s Avengers coming on the 30th of this month. Will give it a try now I guess! So I’ve actually got well into this recently. I have one max power level character (Kate Bishop) and I am working on others. It’s a funny old game but I get why Crystal Dynamics have stuck with it. The characters are all very different and the skill trees are interesting. It’s not without its problems of course, but an injection of players on Xbox is gladly welcomed for end game content (what little there is). But a Raid is coming and also the gear and cosmetic systems are due a rework before the end of the year. In the absence of DFawkes I offer myself as a font of knowledge and mission partner if you get into it.

TIL that apparently you can subscribe to game pass through BT and just have it added onto your bill every month. I don't use BT so it's completely useless learning, but there you go.
