I think they pick up on that pretty will in those SyFy series. It’s a dirty job that he can’t see though.

I’ve not read Dune (yet) but either this or Bond is likely to be my first cinema trip this year. The director is one that I’ll watch anything they make based on just their last 4 films, it seems made for as big a screen as possible as well.

Yeah I'm definitely going to go watch it. Ideal for a grubby little solo outing in the middle of the day at some point.

I think they pick up on that pretty will in those SyFy series. It’s a dirty job that he can’t see though. The weirdest thing 80s Dune did was take the line “my name is a killing word” and make it literal. But then again the books are hardly consistent on those levels once you get into the ”I’m going to become a living sand worm god, and also Paul isn’t actually dead nor is the true kwisatz haderach” nonsense.

I couldn’t quite get my head around the modules *not* being in the book when I finally read it.

I don't particularly have a problem with the weirding modules in the film (a lot of Herbert fans do). It's just a technological adaptation of the Bene Gesserit Voice.
Herbert was happy enough with Lynch's creative decisions before he died. Considering the precursors to this were Ridley Scott and Rudy Wurlitzer's attempt, which would've had Paul and Jessica in an incestuous relationship, and Jodorowsky's batshit insanity, which I would still pay good money to see, I imagine he was relieved someone was adapting it fairly faithfully.

To be fair I like Danny Elfman so I take that back. He did the Midnight Run soundtrack. You'd be surprised at how many people think Midnight Run is one of Elfman's worst scores. It's perfect for that movie, it totally gives it the momentum it needs and underscores the comedy and bromance moments. To be honest I'm not surprised. It works a treat for the film. Every time it kicks in! But it's definitely a score for an 80s action flick so not exactly high art!

What I would very much like for the second film, and what Herbert hinted at (and you do sometimes have to read between the lines and infer the implications) Yeah, that's kinda what I meant by the more interesting stuff being in the second part, rather than the big epic battle scenes. My memory of the book is so mashed up with the Lynch movie at this point that I have trouble remembering what was in what though. The SyFy adaptions weren't actually that bad, and got better as they went along IIRC, but they never really overcame their massive lack of budget. -- Given the current global political situation, I'm wondering how a movie about the desert-dwelling tribes rising up in a jihad to throw the colonialist forces out of their land is going to play in certain countries...

The Soundtrack is on Spotify now. I had a listen yesterday on a tube ride...it sounded pretty shit. Negative hype Yeah - I did the same. Villeneuve was doing the interview circuit, talking about how Zimmer had wanted to score a Dune movie since forever, and never even watched the Lynch version because he didn't want to have that soundtrack (which was fucking EPIC, btw) cloud the purity of his vision, yada yada yada. Listened to the Zimmer score. It was wank. Bereft of context, obvs, but lifelong dream? Must've been a shit dream. Hmm, I looked up the "Dune Sketchbook" after watching the film and didn't mind that (but it is rather "drone-y"). The OST wasn't online when I was doing that.

I loved the soundtrack, Admittedly it isn't one of those osts I'll put on in the background, like original Blade runner or Oblivion, or The Road, or The coward who shot. But it works really well with the visual in my opinion. Just like how I felt with Blade Runenr 2049 ost or the soundscape some one called Scanner (I think) had made for My Little Eye.
It's big, LOUD, over powering. I loved it. Wish I could see Dune at an IMAX, but the one closest to me is in another country so I can't be assed.

Saw this at an IMAX today, 6 of us in the cinema, pretty impressive visually and audibly. I haven't seen the original film or read the book so was completely fresh, story-wise nothing amazing but only halfway through I suppose. Rebecca Ferguson is a very attractive actress, I must say. Much better than Star Wars/10

Half way through the Alternative redux version on youtube by spice diver. Pretty good so far. Not sure I've seen it recently enough to tell a huge difference but can tell he's got rid of most of the head-think-talk bits. Definitely getting me in the mood to watch the new on now.

It's similar to how Hollywood keeps destroying I Am Legend and totally misunderstanding the novel's ending. Ooof! Don't even get me started on that... I fly into a nerd rage with this. The novels ending is superb and genuinely made me gasp. Why this keeps being mangled and missed defies belief.... Happy commune farm??!!! Oh come on!!!!!! /rips kitchen paper towel to shreds

I finishing up with the book in preparation for the film. I'm really interested to see how they deal with all the internal monologue/prescience stuff cos that is integral to the book. It's bloody brilliant too, no idea why I didn't read it in my youth, but my partner has all of the old paperbacks.

Is it showing in IMAX? Just looking at the listings and I can't see it on anywhere. Not sure if that's because Bond is hogging it or because there isn't one?

I saw it in IMAX in Sweden last week so that is definitely a thing. Bond hogging all screens might be the reason.

Yeah, Dune played for about 2 weeks. I'm also Sweden (Stockholm) and the only show with available tickets for IMAX is right now (13:30), with 2 more today fully sold out and Bond replacing it from tomorrow.
There are a few screens showing Dune next week, but very few.

Happy commune farm??!!! Oh come on!!!!!! /rips kitchen paper towel to shreds I think they did originally film something like the proper ending, and test audiences didn't like it so they re-shot it. It may be one of those cases where we blame Hollywood, but it's actually test audiences who are the muppets.
I mean, I've never read the book but the first thing I did when I finished watching the movie was google to see if there was another ending, because they clearly spent the entire movie hinting towards one thing, and then did nothing with it.

No, the alternative ending for the Will Smith I Am Legend is just as (if not more so) insipid and nothing like the novel.
WB is obsessed with remaking Omega Man and all its Jesus metaphors rather than what the novel is actually about (the death of the old society and the birth of the new).

I really must read the novel at some point. From the first 90% of the film, I assumed it was about him being the asshole for murdering all the poor sentient vamps That definitely seemed to be what it was hinting at, and then.. nope.

Going OT now but whatevs: the novel of I Am Legend is slightly more complex than that. BIG FAT VAMPIRE SPOILERS Neville kills the vamps and indeed they are initially mostly monstrous, there are a few (like his neighbour Ben) that still exhibit sort-of human characteristics. It's from his relationship with Ben Cortman the vampire that Omega Man gets its most famous line, 'Come out, Neville!'
As the novel progresses, Neville finds a girl who he thinks is human and 'saves'. She's actually a more evolved type of vampire who has been used as a Trojan horse to defeat him, as there are many other more evolved vampires and Neville has been slaughtering them all, monstrous and evolved, indiscriminately, and to the intelligent caste, he is an absolute monster who kills them in their sleep and is 'legend'.
The novel ends with Neville realising he is the monster now, figuratively and literally, as he is a hairy, revolting bloody beast and they are the new society, he must be disposed of and I am bloody legend.
TEH END. It's a great book, and wonderfully economical, from when every novel didn't have to be 1000 pages of treeflesh. All the film adaptations, even the lesser-seen Vincent Price one (which isn't half bad and influenced Night of the Living Dead) have Neville being some Christ-like saviour. I don't know why they all fixate on this when it's pointedly not the jist of the novel.

Whoa, I didn't realise the novel was anywhere near that old! I assumed it was from a few years before the movie. I'm gonna skip the spoilers for now and see if I can find the novel, but thanks. (Dune isn't out here yet, so I feel like OT is fair game in the meantime )

I'm tentatively excited for Dune. Big fan of the Lynch version, for mainly comedic reasons, but I did genuinely enjoy the book.
Jason Moam is the biggest turn off though. He's absolute shite at acting.
