Is this going to be streamed anywhere alongside the theatre release in the UK at all? I love the book and even have a fondness for the Lynch film, and this really does look like a dream come true, but as I'm immunocompromised there's absolutely no way I'm venturing into a Covid transmission pit (formerly known as a 'cinema') with the current rates of infection. I know I'm missing out by not seeing this at a cinema; I raved to anyone who'd listen that Villeneuve's Blade Runner needed to be seen on the big screen and this will be no different, but I just can't afford to take the risk right now. So is this theatres only? Or will there be another option? I'm not expecting good news.

Itβs straight to HBO Max over here. I thought the UK WB releases aligned with that too.

Got to be a cinema trip this surely. 2049 was fantastic on the big screen.
Is there any point pushing on with the book if I'm really not feeling it by about the halfway point?

Ah ok, thanks. HBO Max isn't available in the UK. Not impossible that WB could distribute through another service, I suppose.
If not - well, it is what it is!

No worries. The book does pick up a bit towards the end as Paul leads the Fremen on the offensive, but I wouldn't stress about it too much as the new film won't get that far. I suspect it'll end just as the Fremen rescue Paul and Jessica from the desert.

I always regretted not listening to all the people who told me to watch Blade Runner 2049 in the movie theatre.
It's not out for another month here, but someone I know saw it in IMAX and they said it was their favorite film of the last few years.
Must not get too hyped.

Right.
I was super hyped for this. Hype is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
But for me, the film lived up to it. Splendid.

So now that I've slept on it. Both Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 are better films, but that's not because Dune is a bad film. It's because Dune the book is a bit shit.
Midway through the film there's a big set-piece. I would have loved if the entire film was just the events that lead up to that set-piece and then had ended with the set-piece. I can see why that didn't happen, because then there wouldn't be much Fremen and sandworm action, not so much Dune, more Court in other words.
But it's a gorgeous film, and a great cinema experience. If this is what MCU fans feel like after the latest Captain USA saves the universe instalment, then I can see why they keep going back.

My memory of Dune the book is very rusty, but don't a lot of the more interesting bits happen near the end? i'm not sure where they cut it, but I feel like a lot of them might end up in the 2nd movie.

I think it depends on what you find interesting - I probably prefer the first half, with all the political intrigue, getting to grips with Arrakis etc. There's enough drama in it to make an arc for a movie (though I'm not sure where this movie ends relative to the book). But, yes, for sure, there are big moments in the second half.
Even though I haven't seen the movie yet, I'm worried a second movie won't get made (I wonder why it wasn't all filmed, then split into two? Cost, presumably).

Apparently it's doing quite well at the box office, which would mean we get a part 2. I think that wether or not you prefer the first or second half of the book is just down to what tickles your fancy. First half and last half are quite different.
I think there was a bit of the court intrigue in the last half but not enough to keep me interested. It would probably make for a nice visual spectacle though.
There were some visions of the future in this one so I think they have shot a bit of what was needed for part 2. I don't know how to make spoiler tags, otherwise I could describe where the film cuts off.

What was the set-piece near the middle, and where does the film end? The big set-piece near the middle is when the Harkonnen atatck. It's very epic. Then the film keeps going until Paul and his mother meets up with the fremen and Paul defeats one of them in single combat. The walk off into the desert together.

It's a bastard that I have to wait till October to watch this in the UK. But I do want to see it on IMAX. I like a lot of what Veillneuve has done but imo he has always been very flash but fairly shallow. But, I mean, compared to most other modern day directors he is very good. My expectations are suitably low though. It's a better way to live life!

Villeneuve was doing the interview circuit, talking about how Zimmer had wanted to score a Dune movie since forever, and never even watched the Lynch version because he didn't want to have that soundtrack (which was fucking EPIC, btw) cloud the purity of his vision, yada yada yada. Listened to the Zimmer score. It was wank. Bereft of context, obvs, but lifelong dream? Must've been a shit dream.

To be fair I like Danny Elfman so I take that back. He did the Midnight Run soundtrack. You'd be surprised at how many people think Midnight Run is one of Elfman's worst scores. It's perfect for that movie, it totally gives it the momentum it needs and underscores the comedy and bromance moments.

What I would very much like for the second film, and what Herbert hinted at (and you do sometimes have to read between the lines and infer the implications) is that Paul is a somewhat exploitative 'messiah' and is using the Fremen, at least initially, for his own ends - see Paul and Jessica taking advantage of the Bene Gesserit Missionaria Protectiva to embed themselves with the Fremen and exploit their superstitious prophesies, which have all been put in place for exactly that purpose.
There's a throwaway line in Dune Messiah where Paul asks Stilgar how many have been killed so far in the cosmic jihad and it's like hundreds of millions. So, if they do do Messiah, I'd like for a Lawrence of Arabia kind of tone where they do show Paul is ruined physically and emotionally by his kwisartz haderachy, and the ultimate result of letting the Fremen loose upon the universe is genocide. These are all things that Herbert examines, to lesser and greater extents: the more simplistic colonial 'white messiah' trope is one that was reinforced by Lynch's movie with none of the subtext and sardonic lyricism of Herbert's writing. It's similar to how Hollywood keeps destroying I Am Legend and totally misunderstanding the novel's ending.
