You’re quoting mostly low brow comedies and action movies, comparing them to auteur cinema is weird.
He’s very clearly talking about *his* movies and *his* style, and he’s responding in the interview to being compared to German expressionist film makers.

In my mind most of those quotes are linked inextricably to the corresponding shot.

The variety article linked doesn't mention anything about German expressionist film makers. I'm sure he's just thinking aloud in response to questions, but the quoted statements seem much more general than just applying to his work. "Dialogue is for theatre and television" seems a pretty all encompassing statement. (That he probably doesn't mean, given he later talks about Oppenheimer). The idea that TV has somehow corrupted movies is weird, as would be the idea that movies have corrupted tv. I think Dune is pretty comparable to LotR. Not sure either would count as auteur cinema though. 2049 is comparable to OG Bladerunner. They're basically action/sci-fi movies and so seem relatively comparable to Terminator, Aliens, Predator, etc.. except much less quotable.

The variety article links to the Times article that’s the original interview that gives context to the whole thing. Christ, does no-one read past the headline.
Also auteur cinema is literally manifestation of the director’s unique style and vision as the primary intent (along with some new wave thinking about thematic trends running through different films, or even genres), and Villeneuve is pretty much the poster boy for those definitions. Maybe go back to Transformers for a bit.

Isn’t Transformers also a “manifestation of the director’s unique style and vision as the primary intent”?

Well, yes, there’s a strong argument that Michael Bay is an auteur (at least in style if not in theme, although some would say that makes him distinctly not auteur). Auteur is not inherently a declaration of intrinsic value or quality.
Also auteur is now losing all meaning as a word. Auteur auteur auteur.

I did a possibly silly thing and booked in a 5-and-a-half double feature to see pt 1 and 2 at a cinema tomorrow. I think it's a cinema that lets you order food to your seat, at least, so I'll probably survive it.

There is, and it may appeal to different moods, personalities etc at different times. All of my fave films feature long languishing carefully framed shots- Barry Lyndon, The Duelists, 2001, etc. A (film based) picture is worth a thousand words for me.

This might blow some of your minds, but there were around about 20 years right there at the start of the 20th century where no film had any dialogue! I assume none of those had any characters or plots to them.

So I'm probably a massive idiot. The ticket includes food, they say.

Sit at the end of the row, unless the ticket also incudes pee containers.

Just to wade in with my €0.02, it's a bit of an idiotic discussion imo, because it entirely depends on the film. Some films are heavily dialogue based, some are almost exclusively visual. The only thing that you can say is that bad dialogue can wreck any film, whereas some films don't really need dialogue at all. So Villeneuve might be a director who makes films that are most notable for their visuals and sound, but also his films can suffer if the dialogue is badly written and performed. This seems obvious.

^agreed. Depends on the film. The variety article links to the Times article that’s the original interview that gives context to the whole thing. Christ, does no-one read past the headline and the tweet and the headline of the linked article and the linked article and the headline of the article linked in the linked article anymore?!

Heads up lads, I’m just out of the marathon double bill and I have a hot take review for you: 7/10
Visually stunning but lost its way a bit in the final 45 minutes, with some odd choices and departures from the book. All in all, feeling a bit deflated.

When is this out for digital release? No seriously, with a 10 week old baby that's the only time I'll be able to watch this. Same thing happened with the first one. The fuckers released them both when I had a very young baby! The audacity!

Might be a morning baby showing?
I saw Captain Marvel like that. My baby was in a baby carrier on my chest, and it fell asleep at the start, woke up during the credits!!!

It's still not very good - the last couple of years I've gone maybe once or twice a month, sob - but it is getting better. My wife was very good though, I she knows how important it is to me (I really don't have many other hobbies that I spend time and money on) so I was able to sneak off and see stuff like The Dark Knight Rises about a month after my firstborn was, er, born.

If its anything like part one it'll be very loud. Though sometimes that scares the baby to sleep. Not sure it's a recommended childcare method though.

You can get earmuffs for babies can't you? Just rocking up to the cinema with a newborn doesn't sound like the best idea ever.
