Wait, the premiere was in Leicester Square? In February? She must have been bloody freezing!

It already is a franchise, really. Especially with the TV series on the Bene Gesserit due at some point. It makes sense for Villeneuve to make Dune Messiah. I'd also love to see Children of Dune, but I think that probably is in fairness going a bit far. I'd certainly drawn the line at God-Emperor, much as I love it's total weirdness. There’s always the James McAvoy and Susan Sarandon version of Children of Dune, currently on Amazon. I'm not sure how well regarded that is but I really like it

It would be interesting to see the reactions of people who are drawn in by the spectacle of the films when they start really hitting the walls of serious weirdness in the books.

You guys working for the Daily Mail?
It definitely seems to have worked in terms of publicity. (though it's a bit of an of choice for someone with no-nudity clauses in her contracts).
The positioning of the words "cuts" and "Hunt" feels deliberate at this point.

She isn’t nude in that picture, she’s got a full body coloured suit under it.

I think he's got a hell of a track record. Arrival and Sicario are two of my favourite moves of the last ten years. I'm not usually one for very bleak movies but for whatever reason I've watched Sicario about five or six times. It'a awful, fascinating and superbly constructed. Stunning work by Roger Deakins in that too.

I should probably watch Sicario again, as it didn't do much for me first time around. Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 are superb though and amongst my favourite sci-fi films of all time.
Edit - Just watched Dune Part 1 again and loved it more than the first time. The final third or so worked better for me this time around. Definitely hyped for Part 2.

I really should watch Sicario, as I loved Blade Runner 2049, Dune Part 1 was pretty good, and Emily Blunt has been in loads of good stuff recently. I think the first review I saw of it made it sound really right-wing, so I avoided it. It's weird how the first review you see of something can fix an impression in your mind that's really hard to ditch.
Arrival was boring though.

That's interesting. I don't see it as being right wing at all. Spoilers, Bill, so you have to decide if you want to check it out for yourself first. I think it's a blend of the hero's journey - a failed one - and a revenge narrative, told over a number of (mostly heart-pounding) set pieces. The nominal hero, Kate, ends up completely defeated by the forces that theoretically she is aligned with. She's out of her depth, naive and betrayed. It's a pretty scathing look at the war on drugs and the moral bankruptcy of the US agencies involved, the CIA in particular: they've become, to some extent or other, the monsters they are supposed to slay. The character I loathe the most in the move is Josh Brolin's CIA dude-bro, with his easy exterior and his utter moral bankruptcy. I can't really align that with being right-wing. I don't think Taylor Sheridan is as a writer, though it's an easy conclusion to jump to when you watch stuff like Yellowstone.

My missus expected something more akin to Contact based on the trailers of Arrival (no idea why) and was all aboard the hype train. You could practically feel the disappointment emanating from her during the film, which kind of soured my viewing...
I really need to give it another watch. Prisoners and Incendies too.

Yeah, I would say Contact and Arrival aren't that dissimilar, beyond the obvious parallels of being first contact stories. Both are fairly grounded and aim for some kind of realism to the situation, whilst also both ending up in quite fantastical (but still very character driven) places.
I also love both.

I don't want to bash Arrival as lots of people really love it. It just didn't really click with me.
Maybe it was because I'd been looking forward to it for a while, as I liked the original short story. It's quite common to not like the movie as much if I've already read the book.
He clearly has this slow-paced style, which is his thing, but in Arrival everything was so grey and dull and the combination of the two made it really hard to get through. In something like Bladerunner you had much more interesting visuals and world, which maybe paired better with the slow pace.
I really should try some of his other stuff though.

Yeah, languid pace is very much Villeneuve's thing, and I take your point about colour palette and world-building, though personally I think Arrival is visually stunning (I love the design of the craft and the aliens themselves).
In any case, the whole unfolding of the alien language and the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is right up my street and as exciting to me as any of the more conventional plot beats alien contact movies have (including this one).

They have a lot of things the right love - people dealing with their problems themselves, largely by shooting each other, but that’s about it.

Exactly right. He's a very interesting guy. I don't love all his stuff (I'm absorbed in Yellowstone right now but it's a bit too much of a repetitive dynastic melodrama for my tastes) but I think he's quite brilliant.

I like all of his shows atm - Yellowstone (I wish they'd hurry up wit the last half of the final season) and spin-offs, Mayor of Kingstown, Special Ops: Lioness, Tulsa King (less so than the rest but it's pretty fun), and I've enjoyed a lot of the movies he's written. Looking forward to 6666, Fast and Landman.

Mayor of Kingstown! I knew there was something I was forgetting. I think that got lukewarm reviews - I mean, it is just pretty relentlessly grim, I suppose - but I've enjoyed it up until now and hope Renner is well enough to make the next season soon.
The guy is seriously prolific.

It's definitely lower tier, but I quite like it. Mainly for Gyllenhaal's double performance.
I have to admit I googled wtf the ending meant the first time I watched it, then promptly forgot all about it and did the same thing the second time.
