Yeah, jokes aside I thought that episode was superb. As for that particular scene (non-spoiler book details follow), it was never explicitly shown, but in the prequel book it said that Moiraine and Siuan were "pillow friends". Which is a pretty heavy implication.

In the book, he (Valda) is not introduced until book 7 or so and even then he's not a Questioner or member of the Hand of the Light - he's a senior field commander of one of their armies. This Eamon Valda is a character who seems to be an amalgamation of three children of the light from the books - Geofram Bornhald, a commander and Jaret Byar, one of his men Interesting. I'm not watching the show so far, but I would have guessed that they would have simply gone with Byar (i.e. the radical/true believer/utter as****e). But I suppose it might be a necessary move to get rid of as many minor characters as quickly as possible.

Which is a pretty heavy implication. Ah ‘Pillow friends’. The polite term for fuck buddies. Rosamund Pike is such a good actress. She gives Moraine some real gravitas and elevates the show overall. She’s an executive producer on it, so I guess it’s her money she’s got on the line, so why not give it all. In fairness, I can’t recall when she ever gave a bad performance in anything. Is there really just two more episodes this season? That saddens me.

For some reason I thought it was 10 episodes, that's a shame. It seems to have gradually, almost imperceptibly become really good. As mentioned, Rosamund is absolutely smashing it.
Last episode on Christmas Eve I guess.

Glad to see others enjoying it as much as I am. It's really surprised me. Excellent episode yesterday, pillow friends and all.

For all my moaning about the slightly cheap feel it has, I am quite enjoying it.
No idea how it compares to the books, but I actually wish it would slow down a little, breathe and do a bit more world building. The last two episodes have tried it before suddenly launching in to the next QUICK WE MUST MOVE bit.
10 episodes might have let that I guess. Ah well.
Question: I think I must have missed something, but what is the Ogre guy tagging along for? Or is that something I just need to wait to be revealed?

I assume it will figure into the next episode, but the Ogier is basically a guide.

There's a clue in the way that people call the ogier "Builder".
As for the pace, most of this season is book 1 only. There's 15 books I think and they estimate 8 seasons.
I'm enjoying it too and think I'll rewatch as soon as it's complete.

That's what I understood also re: seasons. If it stays at this level of quality or more, I could see them actually making it eight seasons too. I'd unsurprised if they went up to 10 eps per season. Eight eps usually means "We think this project is a risk, but we're willing to take it". Glad season 2 is already in the works. I haven't read past book 2 (and even that is hazy) but my understanding is that even superfans tend to think there are some books in the middle that you could basically cut down to a handful of scenes and essentially lose nothing of value. (Actual readers please feel free to agree/disagree, I'm ignorant here).

The middle books tend to have all the important events happen in the first chapter and the last chapter, and most of the stuff in between doesn't really do anything significant.
I have a strong memory of that, despite having apparently forgotten large amounts of stuff from the books.

starchildhypocrethesThey only touched on it very slightly, but you need an Ogier to navigate the Ways.

Really enjoyed the latest episode. It has gone from okay to being really fucking good.
And Rosamund Pike is just incredible.

I too enjoyed the episode. My only gripe being red dress witch's jawline which I find very distracting.
They were right not to rake the horses through, dimension door causes 4d6 force damage to the party including accompanying creatures if you fuck it up.

BTW, did anyone play the old PC FPS game? I don't think it's legally available anywhere these days. It was a solid 7/10 FPS iirc. The mists in the Ways were kinda cool at the time. Dunno if that's a spoiler for the show.

As far as I remember I had some graphics issues or something like that and quickly gave up on it again.

Met the wigmaker person on WoT last night - interesting stuff. She created Rosamund Pike's wig amongst others. It's pretty gruelling process hand-stitching each hair and adding subtle highlights which we never really notice.

I've dipped back into the first book again, and I'm amazed at how much they've managed to streamline the thing. There's a huge chunk of the book set in a place that the TV people just did not go to at all. And the plot still basically makes sense; the only thing I really missed was a bit of extra character development for Bland al'Thor.

I came up with "Bland al'Thor", by the way. It's totally original, don't steal it.

Did I also mention that my name is Thomas Wagner?
(btw don't read that review if you don't want to know where the show is heading, it's got book plot spoilers in it)

I still like "Randall Thor". Thinking of him with a big old mullet helps with the middle section of the story.

I played it and liked it a lot but I remember some kind of issue with the gameplay which stopped it being a classic, like, there wasn't enough ammo, or you had to wait for it to recharge in an annoying way or something. I thought it was actually kind of underrated though. It came out at a difficult time which is probably why it was largely ignored - Quake III, Unreal Tournament, System Shock 2, EverQuest, and that's just some of the first-person ones.

Yeah, I think there were some issues like that. It was also trying to make an FPS out of a setting without guns, so the spells felt a little like gun analogues at times. But for the time it was ok. It captured the setting a lot better than I expected. It's not as good as the games you listed. But that was the era of 100s of Quake engine FPS adaptions of different properties that were almost like Total Conversions of Quake. I'm still working my way slowly through the show in spare moments, so I'm up to episode 3.5 I'm largely enjoying it, though I have to say it's nothing like I imagined it. Lots of it is technically accurate to the book, but everything is much grimmer. Thom Merrilin is nothing like I imagined him. But that's because my imagination was much lighter more colorful high fantasy, like the covers. I've dipped back into the first book again, and I'm amazed at how much they've managed to streamline the thing. There's a huge chunk of the book set in a place that the TV people just did not go to at all. And the plot still basically makes sense; Yeah, it's kinda making me want to go back to the first book, just because it's so different from what I imagine and I want to see what's from the books or not. The streamlining does have the effect of making the similarities to LotR much more blatant. Met the wigmaker person on WoT last night - interesting stuff. She created Rosamund Pike's wig amongst others. It's pretty gruelling process hand-stitching each hair and adding subtle highlights which we never really notice. That's cool. TBH i'm a bit surprised Rosamund Pike needs a wig as her hair is pretty normal in this. I guess being a wigmaker is a bit of an underappreciated art... the only time people notice your work is when you do a bad job.

As you say, an underappreciated art. I also got to see/hold the wig used in The Flash which another wigmaker worked on (basically the party I was at had three film/tv wigmakers in attendance). They all have worked on wigs for many AAA films/TV including Game of Thrones/LOTR etc etc.
The hair itself is bought from Eastern Europe/Russia if you really wanted to know ;-)
