I did enjoy the 'England fans' nailing "It's Coming Home".

Tbf, recruiting local people as "fans" of different teams has been done at other world cups. I remember it being a thing at the South Korea one, though it probably was not because of people boycotting the thing.

Somehow, I don't think this tournament is going to pan out the way FIFA and Qatar want it to Given how badly crowd issues were handled here and in France for the Euro's and CL final it does feel inevitable that this will be riddled with disasters. A police force with zero experience managing football crowds, an openly hostile environment towards the LGBTQ community, a lack of accommodation, a society ruled over by an ultra conservative monarchy and all secured through a clearly corrupt bidding process. What could go wrong?

On the complete lack of experience with football crowds, this is the great irony.
Given everyone's distaste for the cup, many are staying away, which means the only ones actually going are the mega fans who go to everything. Now, I would suspect that mega fans of following the England (or any other) team are exactly the type that conservative Qatar would find the most difficult.
They'll be Keith from Middlesbrough who can't understand what the problem is with drunkenly shouting about the war at some Germans. How will they handle him?
Or, worse, the ones that have the "well I fucking paid to be here, I can do what I want" crowd.
In many, many ways, I want there to be a rabble of Little Englanders out there.

They're laying on fully funded trips to fans from each country on the proviso they say how great Qatar is, apparently the price of some people's soul is a holiday and football tickets.

I have zero interest in this. It's just such a clusterfuck.
I'm not really normally all that into football, but having like 5 different nationalities in our household usually rallies around a team or two at the world cup or euros.

Yeah, much like Liverpool prem league “win” during covid has a large asterisk next to it, so will this years World Cup and World Cup winner. Just need to get it over with and get back to the season. Total cluster fuck.

Perhaps I'm just more cynical now given the state of the world atm, but I'm not too enthusiastic atm. Maybe it will change once the group stages are past. Just too much around this WC with the slave labour, the repeated warnings of not exhibiting any public displays of affection, on news coverage, the fact its in Winter, that tickets are so expensive etc. The party spirit isn't quite there from a country that doesn't appear to be too welcoming.

On the actual footballing side of things, really felt for Nkunku getting ruled out of the tournament after picking up an injury in their first training session out there. Camavinga made the challenge, guess he'll be feeling shite as well.

I saw the vid, Camavinga had no business going in with a tackle that hard.

Just the way he goes in, on a training match days before the WC. No need. Maybe part of it is Nkunku getting his foot planted down too which didnt help.

At least wait until you lot scrape through the group stage and go out on penalties before you boycott it.

Ivan Toney has been charged with over more than 200 breaches of the FA's betting rules. Which is why it's Wilson in the squad

Just the way he goes in, on a training match days before the WC. No need. Maybe part of it is Nkunku getting his foot planted down too which didnt help. There's a wider view of the video where you see Nkunku slipping a metre or so before the tackle. Camavinga gets the ball there, it just seems unfortunate. It's easy to say there is "no need" for making tackles in training but these guys play and train at a high intensity that prepares them for matches. Granted there is probably another level of intensity that many can go to on a match day but you still have to train hard. It looks like a really unfortunate clash but with such small margins these things will happen from time to time. Don't think Camavinga does a whole pile wrong unless you class the 6 or so inches he raised his foot as heinous.

I just got Eng-er-land in the office sweepstake so that's us out at the first hurdle - not that I expected them to do well this time anyway.
