Yo! So, a thing has happened. I spun up my Boomerang Rentals sub a few months back to hoover up all the Call of Doody games I'd missed in the last couple of years. I've since had a trickle of last-gen games I wanted to catch up on, like the ill-fated run through Resident Evil 2 REMake and wotnot. So I've been a good PIGWHIP citizen. I've rented games, I've declared them, I've played the shit out of them.
I recently sent back a game and had Aliens: Fireteam at the top of my list, and had instructed the service to ONLY to send me my number 1 pick. No matter how long it might take.
For some reason it went down my list and plucked FUCKING Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice from about 15 games in.
I added that because I do always like to bang my head against a FROM game from time to time, if only to confirm that I'm still old and shit and/or that they're not really my bag any more.
So. Two options:
1. I immediately send it back, and patiently await Aliens: Fireteam.
2. I install it, and you FUCKING RULES LAWYERS set me a completion criteria.
Note that literally the only FROM game I ever completed was Otogi: Myth of Demons on the original XBOX in the naughties. So a literal completion is off the table, I suspect. I did three bosses in Demon's Souls on PS3. 1 boss on Dark Souls. Seven bosses on Bloodborne. I did complete Hollow Knight, though, so maybe there's life in the old dog yet.
My opening bid is: put at least 12 hours into the game before it can come off my list. Scanning the Sekiro thread that would - at best - account for a third of the game. Any counter bids, or is the motion carried?
P.S. because I didn't actually *read* the dispatch email, I've been sitting here like a plum expecting Aliens: Fireteam to arrive. Imagine. My. Surprise.

I think if we were to give you a specific 12hr stopping point then you'll play it with the expectation to give up. Who knows if by 12/13hrs the combat will suddenly click and you'll become a rabid From fan at last? I say get cracking on it then present your giving up plea if you reach a point too far above your skill and enjoyment level.

Phattso. I think ultimately, whether you keep Sekiro or not is up to you if it has been sent erroneously. Be warned though, if you do keep it, it's probably the toughest of Fromsoft's recent games and relies heavily on fast reaction times for parrying or countering. Bosses also have multiple health bars. As for a completion challenge if you do keep it, then I mentioned in the Sekiro thread that the game itself has a natural 'gate' that most felt was the point at which it tasks you with proving whether you've learned its core systems, particularly parrying, dodging and countering. That gate is the fight against Genichiro at the top of the pagoda. You face him long before the end of the game but and it's tough fight. If you can beat him but can't face going any further, then I'd say I'd vote to allow you to send it back. If however, you can't beat him, or if you do beat him and decide to move on past here, then either complete it or have a slot filled. My two cents.

Well I've completed all the From games but this is on a totally different level difficulty wise. Spent countless hours on the first boss and binned it soon afterwards. Just wasn't enjoyable at all. Send it back .....

Ah list regret... I remember this well from my Lovefilm days. So to summarise this long and pitiful tale of excuses:
-You put Sekiro on the list of games you want to rent
-They sent you Sekiro
-You're sulking and think you deserve special treatment because it's not the game you wanted the most.
I propose the following challenge: complete the game with only one hand on the controller while the other one writes out "I will not add games I don't want to my rental queue" 10,000 times.

Been some time since i played the original, just as well as it would have been too much to go straight from one to the other. Fun gameplay and I got a little teary at the end. I’d give it 8 out of 10.

Control is done and dusted. It was good although I'm glad I've finished it, the story a bit wierd and oblique but throwing forklifts at baddies was consistently amusing.
Farcry 5 next, could that go on my list please Mr Duck?

You are indeed correct Pigwhipper Rodderz. Our benighted Phattso's mewling about Sekiro is shaming us all, but mostly himself.
I note that all but one reply warned him off the game and the only post cajoling him forward was already-failed Samildanach who, and I have on good authority, doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about and had only managed to beat the earlier FromSoftware games because of being too stupid to give up even when failing 50+ times on some of the easier bosses.
Any attempt by Pigwhippers Phattso to call his Sekiro attempt done will have to be put to the Pigwhip Jury...and I hope you will all be appropriately cruel in your serving of justice.

Though it sounds as though user Phattso is secretly enjoying his time with the game if the Sekiro thread is anything to go by. Anyway, I've decided to grab 🦆 DOOM: Eternal before the PS summer sale ends in an hour or two. I've heard mixed things about it, but I think I'll give it a shot for £13.49 and I do like a bit of shooty DOOM action. |

I think Fallout 4 was actually a great game if you judge it on it's own merits. It only falls down when you make direct comparisons to F3 and New Vegas.

Cyberpunk final battle complete, just going through the one thing I hate in all games. No control and endlessly completing stupid shit, wandering around hitting trigger points to progress the next action or trippy subconscious shit. Basically all the crap I hate Far Cry for.
Totally ruining the game.

All right then, you slithering piss monkeys, I've just beaten Genichiro in Sekiro. 19 hours on the clock - at least 4 of which were chuffing Genichiro himself. Fuck all of y'all.  I'm gonna sleep on it, and decide whether to keep it or return the rental. It took me nearly 20 hours to kill three bosses. It was agonising. And there are 12+ more to go, not including the mini-bosses. If I keep it, it's basically on my list until next year. If I stop playing it, all the muscle memory will go and I'll be fucked. I have been really enjoying it though, frustrations aside. It's the most I've enjoyed a From game since the early steps in Demon's Souls back on the PS3. 60/40 in favour of keeping it on there so far, but let's see how I feel in the morning. |

Yeah, you're right. The timing sucks balls, because I did have a couple of indie games I wanted to pick up for September that weren't too long. I'm basically now on the rapid downhill slope to a bunch of games I 100% know I'd like to play on release (Diablo 2 Remake, Age of Empires 4, Halo: Infinite, to name three) and Sekiro basically kills that. But I'm enjoying it. It's outside my comfort zone. And yeah, that's sort of what the challenge is supposed to surface. But still: fuck you, Boomerang, for not. sending me the new Aliens game.
When I eventually hit a wall with Sekiro - and my skills absolutely won't carry me to the end of that fucker - I'll have to wait for the end of year reset. By that point I'll likely have many dozens of hours in it, so it can legit be struck off the list. But - like Bridge FUCKING Crew - it's basically a slot blocker for the rest of the year.

Phattso Congrats on the Genichiro win Phattso! Funnily enough, as you've kind of sussed in the post above, isn't this the sort of situation that led you down the path to creating this annual challenge a few years ago? Essentially buying games and starting to play and (mostly) enjoy them, but then abandoning them for the next shiny that came along. Before you know it you have a pile of unfinished, practically unplayed games and that feeling of it all becoming a hollow pastime. If you're enjoying Sekiro, and it sounds like you are, then I'd say stick with it! You know there's always going to be a thread of people who'd be happy to help out with advice if you get stuck. Plus you have 3 additional slots to make use of if you want to play something else.
