I switched to earbuds for playing games because headsets are so uncomfortable with glasses and gave me headaches. Probably a loss in sound quality but much more enjoyable
So what's a normal playthrough time for someone who hasn't played DS before? I can see it being really oppressive without the siliness of RE to add some relief

It's a different game to the original as there are sidequests if you want to participate in them, took me around 15hrs as I really didn't want to rush things.

I was about 16 - 17 hours. I was taking my time as well so for a first playthrough I'd say around the 15 - 17 hr mark then.

Yeah, these will be purely for gaming on so not too worried about music (I've got the XM3 for that along with a few more options) Just want something that'll work wirelessly with each console and provide decent sound, these seem to be one of the few options from my brief search.
I only use mine for gaming and the are generally decent. When I said music, I should of explained that I meant when music kicks in on games. Its ok, but nowhere near as good as my previous HyperX headphones for sound quality.

20 hours for me, but I explore every corner and played on hard. Most people seem to average around 15-16 hrs. (17-18 hours if you take into account the times you have to go off and change your pants).

I really am not meaning to boast, its not like I ever completed Elden Ring or any of the Dark Souls games before.
However, I am very familiar with Dead Space which is why I chose hard mode. One of my complaints is that the game felt too easy even on this mode. Also the changes to the weapons made them very overpowered. Get the force gun out and hardly anything can hit you.
Maybe I just know Dead Space "too well".

To be fair on medium it definitely felt like it got too easy towards the end.

Does the difficulty reduce items? I'm happy killing normal monsters, and don't mind them inflicting more pain as I can deal with that, but if it lowers the amount of stuff, or ammo, it can do one, unfortunately.
I'm on easy, and I'm constantly running out of ammo and health, never mind nodes

Its hard to say really. Like with health, it didn't give me any health packs for ages, and then when i got hit a few times and was running low, it suddenly threw 3 in a row at me from dead Necro's.
Harder to say on ammo, but there is some kind of dynamic system in place where I think the game will give out what you need. I did a few times buy some additional ammo from the store if I ever felt i was getting a little low though.
Based on that, I would say go up to Normal. The game will make sure you are alright.

I swear, everytime I did that (and I did it a few times), and I felt all well equipped and brave, the game threw so many monsters at me that I was back to zero within minutes. Every. Bloody. Time. I am certain that's the "AI director" being a bit too obvious at times.

Yeah I began to see through the smoke and mirrors when I knew the game was intentionally limiting ammo and health except when I desperately needed it or giving me ammo for the least upgraded weapon, the pulse rifle.

That's the whole point of their AI director though wasn't it. It was designed literally to tailor the experience for the whole game to keep this balance. You'll never be completely out, you'll never be completely loaded. You'll always have "enough". Likewise you can never completely relax, yet you'll never be put against insurmountable odds.

Yeah, I'm wondering if that's happening to me too - I keep going to the store and loading up, and when backtracking to where I want to go to, I'm hammered left and right by necromorphs.
Perhaps if I just walk around with a sharp stick or something, nothing will happen.

I agree with Lou though, you never want it to feel too tailored or it stops feeling organic and real.

It does feel a bit to aggressive in its implementation compared to say the system in Resi 4 which also had dynamic difficulty.

I'm the opposite. I liked this because it felt more organic, rather than a rigid design that I had to either overcome or bash my head against.

Actually that's not a bad idea.
When I realized I never had many health packs, I started putting those that I did have in storage. I don't think the game takes into account anything in storage, so they actually started dishing out a few more health packs.
Put excess ammo in storage and I think the game will be more generous dishing it out.
Walk around with a stick, and possibly never get attacked!

I think it's a great system, don't get me wrong, it just lacked a bit of subtlety at times. I also agree with monkman5000 above.

I'm starting to regret buying like 60 plasma cutter bolts just before I saved it and switched off before.

I finished tonight, 16 hours 40 mins. Thought I’d been pretty thorough but managed to miss upgrade parts for several guns.
Immediately started new game plus and let it go for the night at the beginning of chapter 2. It’s good to come back to this section after they fixed the graphics. I didn’t know anything was wrong when I started, but now I get to go through these areas again with a marked improvement.
