That's what made me laugh when all the negative feedback was flying towards CP. It was being hammered for cheap attacks. Dead Space has always had cheap attacks as well. All the way through the game you've got them springing out all over the place. Personally don't see them as cheap attacks in either game tbh. Just listen. The audio clearly indicates when something is about to attack you. The audio specifically in CP was such that I was never once blindsided. Haven't ever been in Dead Space either. What's the alternative? Enemies only spawn when you're looking in their direction? No thanks. This is why I mentioned a headset as I've got to be honest - I'm not hearing them behind me until my back gets slashed. Probably because I'm panicking and madly firing at whatever is in front of me I think you'e right that it's probably just part of the genre rather than cheap, I'm just not a massive fan of it.

I must admit I am a Dead Space fan through and through, so there is pretty much nothing I can fault about the remake. You always have to have your wits about you. I love the fact that they can spawn in behind you, this has always happened in Dead Space and something you should always assume to protect yourself. It puts you under a lot of pressure dealing with enemies from both sides and I wouldn't have it any other way.
But yes, you definitely should be playing with a headset, not over crappy TV speakers. Please tell me your not playing over crappy TV speakers?!
Well...ahem... maybe. To be fair, we were using a soundbar until recently but it crapped out and we haven't done anything about it yet.

So I have seen the article on Eurogamer about graphical fixes on the way. Mainly due to the VRS, but John @ DF has also mentioned black crush in the game.
I am playing on a Series X, with a HDR enabled TV. While sometimes I think the image could look a little sharper, overall I think the game looks fantastic and I definitely haven't seen black crush. I am not seeing the majority of the issues that DF have picked up on, although they do mention its worse on Playstation, so perhaps that's why. Perhaps when the fixes come it will sharpen the image up somewhat and I will be like, "holy hell", who knows.
I will soldier on with my playthrough, because even in its current state I would say its one of the most polished games I have played.

I'm wearing headphones, but tbh most of the times, it's a visual thing when they pop up behind. I don't see them pop up, as I'm not looking that way, but generally, with dead space, as soon as *anything* kicks off, I'm 180'ing constantly trying to spot the fuckers

Digital Foundry Tech review is up. John basically said if you can't wait for a patch then play the Series X version. That explains why I am not seeing such dramatic issues as being reported.
I also don't agree with the black crush comment. The "darkness" and the overall brightness of the game looks perfect to me on my 55" 4k HDR tv.

Yeah I haven't seen anything in regards to black crush. Not that it;s absent, just that it's not something I'm noticing.
The other thing though. Yeah.

So I've just found out the AI intensity director doesn't just do enemy spawns it also affects things like random events, lights, fog and enemy sounds reverberating around you.

That's pretty cool, especially with the lights and fog. It does feel a bit more alive, this Ishimura
It's not system shock 2 levels of immersion, but it's pretty damn good

That DF makes it sound so good, with the alterations in layout and the randomness.
I'm gonna have to wait a little while but it's definitely on the list.

Had to stop playing, not before the AI director trolled me by breaking open an overhead vent in a corridor, then having the lights go out while screams played. Absolutely shat me up. Bravo you cunts.

If the patch has gone live already then that is ridiculously quick from the development team

Looks the same after the patch to me. Was the bug only for some people? Can't say I've noticed any black crush on my TV either.

Honestly not sure if everyone on ps was experiencing it or just some. Like I said before it’s weird. I didn’t notice it, then I did. Once I had, I couldn’t unsee it. I thought at first it was fine but looked at my screenshots and it had been there from the beginning. Definitely not there now though. Because the game is so dark in places, and the lighting so good, I think you probably could go quite a while without picking up on it. Particularly as you’re more focused on every shadow and movement possibly being a screaming stabby thing.

Last thing I did was the new asteroid bit. I think I’m a bit dense as I couldn’t immediately figure out what I had to do. I know I’ll be in the minority but I think I preferred what the original game did. This felt incredibly low stakes.

I thought the re-worked asteroid section was good. However, I do agree that it felt "low stakes" this time. I would still take the new version compared to the old though.
Only got to play for an hour last night as was out visiting family. I'm near the end of chapter 10, I plan to run through to the end tonight if I can.

Yeah from a gameplay point of view it was fine, just felt a bit too easy (once I stopped being thick). I actually liked the challenge of the original. VERY minor gripe though.
I have also decided to ditch everything bar the Ripper and the Plasma Cutter. I might keep using the Contact Beam as it's very cool but it seems as though I'm regressing to my old style of play.

Playing on hard, and I am finding that if I just stick to the plasma cutter then I get swamped far too easily as the Necro's take quite a few shots to kill. I am having to rely on my other weapons a lot more in this remake, especially the force gun which is great for crowd control. The plasma cutter hasn't changed at all, but all the others have had significant upgrades.
The Line gun's secondary mine function is possibly my fav now. Upgraded with 3 beams, so can basically stick it on the floor and use it as a defensive barrier as all the Necro's walk right through it, its great.
I think you are missing out if you don't use the other weapons. The ripper used to be my favorite, but on hard it is a risky weapon to use at times.

Tried the contact beam again. Couldn't get on with it again. Weird as fuck that gun. I was firing straight at a necro and nothing happens. I do the alt fire, it take 3 ammo and managed to kill one. But with 8 capacity...that's er no use to me.
Back to the cutter till I get the line gun
Chapter 4 now, obliteration imminent

Line gun is the other one I used to use so waiting for that as well.
To be fair I don't think I'm missing out. I use the weapons when I pick them up. I just like focusing on 2 or 3 max. There will be other playthroughs and other difficulties so plenty of time. Just would rather go with what I like for now. I'm not too far ahead of you quad I'm just finishing up Ch4.

Yeah I'm the same. I piss about with the guns for a bit and then settle back. I'll keep the line gun for sure though.
I think I've just enabled the ads cannons

I'm definitely switching between all of the weapons primarily because of the extremely limited ammo I'm getting from drops and boxes. After testing it's definitely RNG after dying in one particular section 3 times, the first time just got credits and one ripper blade drip, being hit a few times I got all health packs and the 3rd time where I was fully prepared it was all credits. As a result I'm constantly having to buy ammo as my most common ammo drops are pulse rifle rounds with plasma cutter rounds being extremely rare. Health drops also barely drop. It's a very strange occurrence as it does breed more fear.

I just got the force beam and was all “Holy Shit!” with it.
I kept running into an issue where I’d trigger that stupid “go this way” thing on R3 during intense fights, like against the big thingy on the bridge.
I’ve just tried swapping R3 with X/Activate, and it will take some getting used to, but it may actually be really great. Want to pick stuff up or open doors during a fight? Click the right stick. Pretty much never have to take my finger off it now.

I hate clicking in the thumb sticks to do anything.
I actually changed my controls to DS2 controls so that I could run with LB. Its much easier to run backwards this way, I find pulling back on the thumbstick and clicking it in quite tricky.
The trouble is though by changing to DS2 controls, it also disables the ability to rotate Isaac during the zero G sections. I actually didn't realise until chapter 10 that you could rotate yourself in zero G (I know, crazy right that I was missing a huge quality of life improvement!). So about 16 hours in I changed my controls back again. I would love the run on LB but I don't think its going to work with all the other commands I need, I have tried to remap them but not overly happy. Default it is then.
