Another 4 hrs stint tonight. About 16hrs in and on chapter 10, 2 to go after this one.
I think most people would of finished by now but I play so slow. Hard mode seems OK though and glad I started with it, it's not that difficult really.
Some crazy shit happened tonight. This game never ceases to amaze me.
Does anyone know how long Eurogamer temporarily bans you from posting? I still can't post shit after calling out Edwin's review.

Glol. How fucked are Quaddy? Hey, I *like* playing like this, it's like an extra challenge that's why i have to put everything on easy. Can you imagine if i put it on hard while I can't find a battery? Exactly.

@quad, Easy is the "new" norm/hard mate, especially for us old gits! You will not believe the smile on my face (think Worzel Gummidge, as in old school WG with a nice cuppa and slice of cake) when I see "story mode" in the options menu, that and making QTE's a "one press" deal.
Played for an hour before work this morning, 4am no less, perfect time. Completed chapter 2 just started 3. Still only used the (spare us the) cutter as a weapon. Ideally I would like to get the first playthrough done by 10/02/23 but I will take my time and soak up the wonderful oppressive atmosphere.

Make sure you use all the weapons. Unlike the original, they are all useful and fun to use. The force gun has to be one of my favorites, its quite hideous how it strips all the flesh off the necro's. Also great for crowd control, both its primary and secondary functions.
I also upgraded the line cutter so its secondary function now has 3 beams coming off it. It makes a great defensive wall, especially as it stays up for so long.

Didn't play this yesterday despite having the urge to. I'll hold out a little longer for a patch but going through my screenshots yesterday made it quite clear the issue was there from the start, I just didn't notice it. Kind of champing at the bit to play it regardless as it's so good.
Currently have the flame thrower, pulse rifle, ripper and plasma cutter. I normally ditch the pulse rifle and flamer as soon as I get them but I'm using them this time. In fact, shockingly, I'm using the plasma cutter the least. Hard to argue with the ripper though.

Also, John Carpenter officially loves this so that pretty much cements it as the best game ever made.

Apparently there’s some advantage to finishing the game twice, so I’m going to keep playing and have the graphics patch for the second playthrough.

Yeah I ditch the pulse rifle. I don't find its primary fire that useful, although the grenade launcher always comes in handy.
The flamethrower is pretty good, took out a brute using it. Its also great for those asshole creatures on the walls (they look like fat bastard from Austin Powers) and keep regenerating their tentacles. They can be a bitch to kill, but the flamethrower makes it easy. The only trouble is that it doesn't have stopping power, but its fun to light everything up.
The plasma cutter seems a bit weaker in this (until you upgrade it anyway), which meant I wanted to use the other weapons more. Perhaps its just the hard difficulty though which makes it seem weaker in the beginning.
The ripper is always great and fun.
Contact beam seems very powerful. I'm not using it much, although I am not sure why cos every time I did it shredded through the enemies in no time. The fact that its one continuous beam now is also greatly improved.
I am in the late game now, and I am trying to stick to 4 main weapons now: Plasma cutter, line cutter, Ripper, Force Gun.

Yes I heard that it is pretty much essential to play this game twice as there is additional content on the second play through. I don't know much about it though as I didn't want to spoil it for myself.

PS5
It's a funny thing. If I hadn't seen something mentioned online about the issue, I'm not honestly sure that I would have seen it as a thing. Yet typically, it's something that now I'm aware of, my eyes are drawn to it and there's a little voice in my head telling me to just wait until it's sorted. Yet I have necromorphs on a space ship that aren't going to kill themselves, so there's a limit on my waiting.

I can't get on with the ripper. Though the firewall on the flamethrower isn't bad, but not worth it to sacrifice other guns ammo dropping

I can't get on with the ripper. Oh, but it's BEAUTIFUL. The fuckers just run into my spinning saw blades and get mulched. Suits my panicked "start blasting from a distance, miss every shot and get overwhelmed in seconds" type of gameplay.

When I use it, it just holds the blade in front of me, and they come straight up to it, start getting shredded but normally get a hit or two in. It's too unreliable for me

You still need to aim and take out the limbs for it to be effective.

Also the amount of times I think I've actually killed one only to find it crawling out the dark towards me while I'm about to go and do something else is unreal. I need to make sure these bastards are properly dead. Freaks me out.

Telekinesis is your friend here to check if enemies are dead.
Don't forget that you can cut off the Necro's bladed arms, pick it up (or catch it in the air if your quick enough) and fire it back at the enemies. Will preserve ammo, put distance between you, and is super powerful. If an enemy is dead and you use telekinesis on them, it will automatically rip off a blade.

Yeah I never bother with that tbh. Stasis yeah but never tele. Not sure why as it's free to use and, as you say, saves ammo. I've always found it as just too much to think about on top of everything else while I'm playing.

Definitely better if your 1 on 1. If you are facing multiple enemies then telekinesis is not the way to go. I don't always use it, although sometimes if you have used stasis on a Necro, then shoot off the arm, you see the arm flying slowly through the air. Its always fun to catch it and fire it back. Can actually be a quicker way of killing them too as they get impaled on a wall.

The game has been throwing buckets of pulse ammo at me and I just proximity mine every bastard. Seems ineffective against the babies though, I think they’re invulnerable when their tentacles aren’t out.
I think I’m at the last stage of restarting the engines.

Funnily enough, the only time I've found the pulse rifle's primary fire to be useful is shooting the babies, but only once their tentacles are out as you suggest. Spray and pray, basically, that's how skilful I am.

Is it clichéd to make a comparison with The Callisto Protocol? Well, I'm going to. In truth, I think Dead Space is better in almost every way - perhaps not quite as good-looking, but that may be it. The chief distinction is that in addition to the atmosphere it's actually properly fun to play, whereas Callisto was quite fun at times but ultimately I don't think the combat system fully held up.
Callisto got some flak for cheap SURPRISE! enemies, and Dead Space deserves some too - I will never find it not cheap to be suddenly attacked from all sides with little warning or feedback that they're coming at you from behind too (maybe a headset would help?). Happens just a bit too often for my tastes.

That's what made me laugh when all the negative feedback was flying towards CP. It was being hammered for cheap attacks. Dead Space has always had cheap attacks as well. All the way through the game you've got them springing out all over the place. Personally don't see them as cheap attacks in either game tbh. Just listen. The audio clearly indicates when something is about to attack you. The audio specifically in CP was such that I was never once blindsided. Haven't ever been in Dead Space either. What's the alternative? Enemies only spawn when you're looking in their direction? No thanks.

I must admit I am a Dead Space fan through and through, so there is pretty much nothing I can fault about the remake. You always have to have your wits about you. I love the fact that they can spawn in behind you, this has always happened in Dead Space and something you should always assume to protect yourself. It puts you under a lot of pressure dealing with enemies from both sides and I wouldn't have it any other way.
But yes, you definitely should be playing with a headset, not over crappy TV speakers. Please tell me your not playing over crappy TV speakers?!
