Precisely who do you think finds that disappointing?
Not exactly attempting to turn the temperature down in this thread with that post.

Good piece by Tim Harford on the FT site today: Including this quote that nicely sums up the recent arguments in this thread: This is why it makes way more sense to just enjoy/despair at whatever the current situation is, at any given point in time, rather than trying to use the current situation as a basis for how pre-emptively elated/anxious to be about what things are going to be like for the next six months.

Not sure an appeal to consciously avoiding using current information to extrapolate and prepare for the future is the kind of thinking we need more of in this pandemic.
Kind of why we are all where we are, fifth wave on us and just a ridiculous number of humans sick

Why that is you would have to ask them. More reassuring stuff on the kids hospitalisations. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-59978516Numbers below 100k for the first time in a while too.

I think the various professionals involved - epidemiologists, healthcare providers, politicians, etc. etc. so should be trying to extrapolate and prepare the future of course. I also think (personally) that as a random individual at home there's a balance between stressing over what life *might* be like in future, based on an amateurish attempt to interpret stats you don't actually have a proper understanding of, vs. focusing on getting on with life as it stands.

A lot of assumptions being made there. Including that individuals have little agency in how they conduct their daily lives

Maybe I'm not explaining my perspective very well but I think that's the opposite of what I'm saying - that how they conduct their daily lives is exactly the thing that people *do* have agency over. I have agency over what I'm doing in life now - there's little point however me trying to do my own analysis over whether a new variant emerges in six months time and what the impact might be.

I don’t normally read this thread but I met a bunch of anti-vax conspiracy theorists today. Quite fascinating to talk to them
“It’s a man made virus released maliciously to control populations as a part of the new world order great reset”
“It’s all a massive hoax” (found this one strange after the first one
“Look at all the footballers and athletes that have died from heart problems, there used to be about 7 a year, now there are hundreds”
“Just wait till the 5G gets switched, that’s when you’ll see people dropping dead”
They all had yellow homemade signs with protest slogans and gave me a copy of a newspaper called The Light, which I’ll read later

"So far, Omicron seems to be milder, which will be good if proved true."
"OMG why are you saying people shouldn't wear masks on trains?! / Why don't you care about people with long covid?! / Why are you denying that the government have been atrocious?! / Why are you saying it's impossible for there to be a new variant in six months?! / Why are you saying kids being in hospital doesn't matter?!"
"I... uh, what?"

Guess it's a case of "does Omicron being milder mean we can get away with very low levels of NPIs?"

Just been left a voice message. A women at work has tested positive for COVID this evening after doing daily tests. I've worked with her for the last two days. Both more concerned for my wife who she knows is pregnant. Both of us wear a mask at work and both of us have had the jabs and booster I believe.
Do a test tonight or wait? Shit situation basically avoided it till now and been lucky I guess.

Nitrous Do a less-than-useful LFT right now whilst booking your PCR? I think that’s where I’d be. Good luck.

Obviously living in the South as I do it’s not unusual to come across towering intellectuals who manage to construct arguments of unimpeachable logic as to why the virus is a bio weapon from Chynaa meant to pussify the great American patriot, weakening the strongest bestest exveptionalist nation that ever did wrap a massive dong around the globe.
You would think, being a bio weapon attack by a foreign power these folks would be the first in line for vaccines and would not get out of bed unless clad head to toe in NBC suits. Anything less would be aiding and abetting the enemy, surely…

I’m having a look at this newspaper that the conspiracy theorists gave me earlier and no word of a lie there’s an ad at the back for a company that sells tin foil hat clothing, although they call it EMF Protection Clothing

They have copies of the paper lying about but otherwise just seem like all the other people that meet down there (esp dog walkers). Christ knows what they talk about.

Glol.
It's not at all telling that Mr. Ecosse "And as usual no thoughts to the half a million people who've had long covid", "You guys must be delighted at hospital admissions for kids under 5 being 3x higher than the peak a year ago." P. Armoured Bear felt the need to get defensive about that one.
No, sirree - there's no ironometre-breaking irony to someone who says "The whole 'I've decided that it's over so anyone that isn't dancing in the street can get fucked' mentality isn't a good one." struggling to grasp the concept of exaggerating and paraphrasing to make a rhetorical point.
