You'd get the impression that the Brexiters were full of shit after 7 years of their crap.
The sooner they're gone the better.

If only someone could have warned us this might happen before the referendum. It's starting to look like the leave campaign may not have been totally honest in their claims..

They can take our right to free movement, but they'll never take our sarcasm!

I think the only true thing the Leave campaign said in 2016 was that the UK was a member of the EU, everything else was bollocks.

I seem to remember reading that the deal includes provisions for companies to sue the UK government, in secret (to protect from any awful reputational damage they might suffer, can't have that) if any laws are changed that affect the deal. New safety standards, worker protection, any of that terrible stuff, can be shut down quick sharp. So it's just the very best deal all round.

Novara have an interesting interview with Matt Kennard regarding corporate capture. Includes an interesting section on corporations being able to sue governments, well worth a watch.

With any luck it means we get potato waffles and snack-a-jacks over here. You might be lucky enough to get Whittaker's chocolate.

Sounds a bit like Brexit, no.
Also sounds like Tory policy around state-ownership and public services for the last forty years.

You'd almost think deals were a two way street.
I know our EU membership deal basically gave us opt-outs for almost everything, but most trade deals aren't going to be like that. That was a once-in-a-lifetime deal.
Personally, I must remember to keep an eye out for this legendary Whittaker's Chocolate next time I go to the import food store. They source a lot of their stuff from Oz/Nz so there's a reasonable chance they'll have it.
PS/ I thought the UK was joining the TPP? Doesn't that already include free trade with Australia (and Nz?)?

Well yeah, the whole obsession with SOVEREIGNTY conveniently ignored the fact that trade deals inherently contradict the idea of sovereignty.

On a Reddit thread there were people genuinely saying "Where is the EU's FTA with Australia". Like they were missing out on something?!

Didn't the EU want to join the TPP, but they couldn't because people protested against the secret courts thing?

From what I've read, WTO trade rules prevent it because they have to be regional agreements. The UK is only able to join because we have sovereignty over The Pitcairn Islands

As someone who works in UK academic research, it is good to see that a modicum of common sense has returned. However, the reputational damage and research links to partners in the EU will take a long time to repair and I don't think we'll ever get back to the position we were in before Brexit. I imagine many of our partners will have moved on and many won't want to commit to projects with UK research institutions, at least while the Tories are in charge, due to doubts as to whether our government could pull us out again over some imagined slight about 'stopping the boats' or other engineered conflict with the EU over trade/regulations. Hopefully, I'm just being a pessimist but if I was an EU university looking for partners for a horizon project, UK universities/institutions would be at the bottom of my list.

I do think a flip to Labour govt next year will change a lot. There can be a lot of deals done quickly, because I assume the paperwork is there.
Speaking from people adjacent to what I do - bands getting EU visas will likely come in. It's absolutely fucked the sector and I know a lot of bands just can't do the logistics now.
That's all the kind of shit Pete Brexit in Grimsby doesn't understand or care for.

I think I could live quite comfortably for 10 years on £1.8bn. Might have to cut back on the Ferrero Rochers and Viennetta ice creams a bit

Er, you’re going to have to cut back a bit more, we’re still actually about £70bn down on where we were.

Fuck yeah. Ugg boots and blueberries. I can pour maple syrup on my balls from an Ugg boot for less. But it will still cost more to get the syrup removed.

What do us in NZ get from you? I'm hoping for potato waffles and lemon-lime Calippos. Shame you can't send us decent fish and chips, but they're shit in most of the UK anyway TBF.
