Heard this today as well and it really was painful. Of course, it took some time, but it eventually got to his real issue with the EU being freedom of movement. It pretty much always comes down to their dislike of foreigners, even if they try to mask it behind the idea that it causes cheap wages (funny they are quick to blame those taking the cheaper wages rather than the companies that are choosing to drive them down, as well as those that are illegally exploiting).

According to Tom Harwood (I know, I can't be bothered to find the tweet), the point of Brexit is so we could diverge. Why would we diverge from our largest export market? It's insane. You're basically saying to UK firms, you can diverge if you want to, but the place you're most likely going to export to, still has these standards. So to lower your standards for products, your going to diverge your production line to comply with different countries standards. Oh, and BTW, because you have diverged, your largest export market no longer trusts the products you produce, so will be subject to checks and paperwork. Which you have to pay for. Good luck.

Took me an hour last night to get through the immigration queue in Athens and the old couple behind me where moaning all the time… Greeks fault, not a great look for their country etc. We should still be allowed through the EU but with machines whilst waving their shiny blue passports.
The only thing they said that I agreed with was that the NHS hadn’t got the money promised.
Mind you, I never thought it would.

It was clear the plan wasn't to win. The reaction was closer to "shit, what have we done?" rather than a celebration. Even Farage gave a "we did our best, we will carry on fighting" speech after the polls closed and before the results were final.
I expect the background lords of chaos, people like Cummings, who were really running the Vote Leave operation wanted it, but useful idiots that they roped in to be the face of it were hoping to be seen as martyrs rather than victorious.
